No problem, I do like reading your replies, even if you're dead set against me. I just dislike the fact that the discussions are more about my attitude, and less about the points I make.

That's because you started this thread, at least partially, with a complaint about the lack of decent discussions on the forum using the very triggers to start a flame war. It's an amazing case of self sabotage, not the "best"* that I've seen, but still impressive. If you want calm, constructive debates on any issue, the first step is always to not accuse potential opponents of being idiot, or even to imply that unintentionally. Now, this thread is probably unsalvageable at this point, but I think you could create a better one the next time around.

*from a certain point of view.

Now, if you want my opinion on your opinion, here:

    1. Yes, this is a short, hasty implemented patch for a major problem. It reeks of something that was released half finished.

    2. Also agreed.

    3. The infinite animals in one space seems to have more to do with the way spawning works, period. Fixable, but not without rewriting the codes.

    4. Yes, the follow system is hastily implemented. I see no reason why you shouldn't simply be able to pick up chickens, if it matters.

The time intervals you mentioned are too long- 3-4 minutes for gestation and 10 minutes for the animals to grow up, or have it vary depending on the animal. I believe there also should be male and female animals, and that they shoulnd need to be domesticated before breeding.

^ Well, yes. But clear arguments are important when it comes to getting one's point across, and presenting yourself as someone that can be talked to tends to help.

Second, there is no such thing as a "correct" opinion.

I certainly wouldn't mind a constructive discussion, I actually recently joined the forums to learn more about patch 1.9. Specifically animal breeding, but I come here and all I find is this, it's sad how people ruin communities like this.

There's some better threads. I'll go dig one up for you, they seem to get drowned out by the bad threads pretty fast...

Easy. My topic, my title. If you have a problem with it, PM a moderator. Or post on here and I will ignore it, either way I'm fine. Hell, more replies the better, so far I've had 7K people see my suggestions.

See, this is your problem. You're too aggressive, and you're putting people on guard. It's really counter productive, especially when there are people who would be willing to create positive discussion.

Oh, and those 7K views? Most of them are worthless in the context of this discussion. Not for the lack of trying on the posters part, generally speaking of course. It's the equivalent to positions settling down to discuses an economic issue and ending up wasting the session accusing each other of lacking family values. They're now angry at you, not the problem.

    1) "Likely incomplete" is not an argument, it's a personal assumption that has no bearing on any statement except your own.
    2) "Beta" does not mean it will be changed, which again is a personal assumption that is not needed.
    3) Once again, you claim he can "do what he wants", which is a poor counterargument that is not needed and wastes space on this forum.
    4) "Probably" is a personal assumption again.
    5) Again, seen this everywhere, just a post count boost.
    6) See 5).

My suggestions are based on current status of the feature, not past or future, which is why any of the statements I barred from this thread are not needed and I wouldn't waste my time replying to again. Get it now? No? Oh well.

Phar. Really? You want to make a constructive debate, but your responses are too condescending to accomplish anything more than increasing the amount of flaming that will occur in this topic. OTHER threads, which have been producing some very good ideas on how to construct a system in which animal breeding would be useful and reasonably easy to understand, without being overpowered.

The reason this topic has not been producing any good discussion is the way you have presented the problem. By having the thread title include the phrase "Half-assed and lazy!", you are creating a polarizing environment in which this discussion takes place. Essentially, you are rallying both the people who strongly (for lack of better word) support Notch, and those who firmly believe Notch is a lazy, fame-crazed jerk.

You have also prevented people from framing their response in terms of "When this gets fixed, it should..." or "When the next release comes out, breeding should...". This is... frustrating when attempting to discuss hypothetical solutions without sounding like an asshole. Yes, fine, it's an obvious patch. Mojang has other parts of the its working on, and we can only speculate on why they are releasing features when they do. I get the feeling playing around with the system that this was not intended to be its final state, but that it was released early because of problems with the persistent passive mob system.

When you don't think a comment is worth responding to, don't be a ****- just ignore it. Telling someone that they are not worth your time is only going to make them angry, and will lead to them believing that you are automatically disregarding anyone who disagrees with you.

    Edit:

incest - too much to fix for that right now. you'd need some kind of identification system for animals. on top of that though it makes breeding too difficult if you have to gather so many different 'families' and manage them. that's a deep metagame that a modder should make.

People freeking out about the incest is... odd, considering how animals actually behave.

Most mammals handle the inbreeding problem by preventing more than one male from staying with the rest of the herd, forcing younger males to try to claim a new territory elsewhere, possibly establishing a new herd and introducing new blood into a population. Humans deal with inbreeding by having a taboo against incest.

    About the mule thing:
Scientist knew it was possible, just extremely unlikely. The problem is that donkeys and horses have different numbers of chromosomes, so while the mule can survive, they usually can't produce viable sperm and eggs. Occasionally there are fertile female mules, but males are almost always sterile. What must have happened was the mother mule and the son mule had viable gamete with the same number of chromosomes. There's huge amounts of research going into how animals hybrids for conservation and evolutionary studies.

And then there's plants. Plants do weird S*** when they start hybridizing.

    Edit:

Basically, Common scientific knowledge =/= current scientific knowledge.

Also, there is nothing saying that the minecraft animals aren't hermaphrodites.

Same here. Mountains and hopefully soon, volcanoes should spawn in any biome (including ocean). Who doesn't want to find volcanic islands in the ocean biome? They might not ever erupt, but they'd still be cool. Ocean-borne mountains could just be dormant volcanic islands.

Volcanoes need to be mostly limited to mountainous and island biomes, so that the geology geeks don't rage.

I think he's running from an enderman inside a cave system or a stronghold, personally. He certainly isn't digging, and the rustling papers seem to be a map or a book. He seems to make it outside, or runs into a vein of gravel or dirt, but the enderman nabs him anyway.

Endermen are now "day" mobs, as they can easily teleport their way out of cave systems. I have seen three since I started my 1.9 world, and two of them were wandering near my house in broad daylight after I skipped a night.

Word of warning: you want windows near your door now.

Edit: Also, they do come into houses.

To me, it looks like a ring stand from chemistry or organic chemistry, which instead of using a flame or heating mantle, the blaze rod acts as the heat source instead.

I remember back in O-Chem, we'd use a heating mantle to hold the round-bottom flask, and use clamps to hold the ground-glass joints together during the distillation labs.

I do agree though, it would look better if it were on a small table or something, possibly with a change to the model to look more like a distillation apparatus.

Is kinda what the current model reminds me of,

    and:

Which is a bit more standard, and what we used in one of our labs. (at least from what I can remember, I haven't had chem in like 8 years.) :tongue.gif:

Gah! That's what I was thinking of. Thank you so much. >_<

    ....

Also, cross posting this because I'm lazy:

I think potion brewing should be a two or three step process. Prep the ingredients, boil them in the cauldron, and then use the rack for distillation and controlled mixing of potions. So you can take potions A and B, distill them into potions A+ and B+ (concentrate or separate the effects), then mix the two potions together without heat.

The difference between mixing potions in the rack and mixing them in the cauldron is that certain potions should react with each other in the cauldron to produce new effects, while the rack only combines effects.

So, for instance, you could make a potion of fire resistance and healing in the cauldron because they'd react and make a damage health potion, but you could make them separately and mix them together in the rack. If you took the resulting potion and dumped it into the cauldron, you'd also get a damage health potion.

    Basically:

Cauldron= Extract + combine with heat (chance of reactions between effects)
Rack= distill + combine without heat (no chance of reactions between effects)

Both of which imply no, which directly goes against my only rule of saying anything that implies no. Being a women doesn't mean you're immune to homosexuality, and having intercourse with your father isn't dependant on the sexuality of the person.

Hmm, true on the first one, but the second one certainly doesn't imply "no".
