posted a message on Can't log in or update
I decided yesterday to finally update my Minecraft in anticipation of playing with some friends for the first time since June (currently have 1.6.6). Then I found out 1.8 was released yesterday, but I figured I should try updating anyway.

I went to log in, and got the message "Login failed". I went to Minecraft.net to see if I could log in there - it worked.

Then I read that there was a newer launcher out, so I followed the instructions, got the new launcher, and tried again. Still getting "Login failed". I tried a couple more times which ended with the same result.

I've also tried the "force update" option, but nothing happens.

I really hope the solution isn't to redownload Minecraft, because this computer is a pain in the butt with that sort of thing.

I have Windows 7 and Java is up to date.

Also, I paid for this game - over a year ago. So there's no need to go on a tangent.

    I think that's everything. :unsure.gif:

I had the outdated launcher too (didn't know). The new one looks nifty and seems to run easier.

Unfortunately I still can't log in.

    I'm getting that too.

I guess I chose the wrong day to update. (Haven't played in a while.)

My eyes... are a lovely chocolate brown!

I had a classmate in History who asked me what was up with his eye because apparently I know everything (insert troll face here, lol). I told him he had partial heterochromia. He has blue eyes and his right eye had a random patch of brown.

And seekercat, I really like your eyes.

I always wonder about the eye colour genetics for people with heterochromia.

In my opinion, i think that lockdown (or code yellow) is pretty fun when its not that serious

I mean in most cases we don't have to do much schoolwork. Alot of people i talked to seem to have the

    same opinion too.

Yeah. It was a crazy experience, as never before in my life had there been any lockdown drills so I had no idea what to do or expect. I was worried in the beginning, until texts were received by other classmates signifying that perhaps we were safe.

Oh for **** sake, I hate that too. Well, at least my mother calls me or my brother (on her side) when the computer goes wonky.

I'm so relieved I'm not the only one! I wasn't sure if I was losing my mind.

My mom does that too - she calls for me (I'm almost always home when it happens). She has the decency to ask if she should reboot the computer. I always say, "Nope!" and proceed to fix the problem. On rare occasion the computer does need to be rebooted. My dad asked for help once, but it was only once and so I'm very irritated.

I got on the computer today to discover the internet window I had (which didn't have many tabs open as per my own rule to prevent supposed computer slow-downs) was gone, yet again. Sure I can recover what I had, but it's very annoying when it happens almost daily, and I'm used to having it stick around (except to start fresh, again to prevent slow-downs). Plus that means I lose any posts I wasn't finished writing, and I have to log back in to any places that can't remember my login.

In grade ten (I think), a student in chemistry class accidentally mixed some chemicals to the point where the concoction lit on fire after it was thrown in the garbage. The teacher pulled the alarm and pulled out the fire extinguisher and put it out. After it was confirmed it was safe to return in the building, we were allowed back inside.

The teacher moved the garbage bin outside the building (keep in mind this classroom is on the second floor of a two-story), underneath the window of the classroom. Not ten minutes later smoke rises up and gets into the classroom, causing the alarm to be pulled once more. The garbage bin was on fire again!

This time the fire was so big nothing could be done about it except let the firefighters move it further away from the building and wait for it to burn out. Part of the side of the building got scorch marks (has since been removed due to construction to connect the two buildings).

    ------------

Also in grade ten, on the last day of school, I brought my pet corn snake to show to anyone who was interested, and respected the space of those who were afraid. Later that day I heard students talking about rumours that a rooster and a snake were in the school! I laughed. Apparently the rooster rumour was true - some guy kept it in his locker. o_O

    ------------

In grade eleven while in German class, at around 1pm, there was an announcement over the loud speakers saying that the school was in lockdown. We were to stay in the classroom, and if we needed to use the restroom we were to be escorted by our teacher and nobody was allowed in or out otherwise. We had our door locked, but we stayed at our desks as texts from friends to other classmates were saying there were police in the building and it seemed we were safe. Played cards, munched on some chips one student had in their backpack, talked about random things, etc. We even opened the window (we were on the top floor of a three story building) and exchanged greetings with neighbouring classrooms.

When it was after 3pm there was another announcement saying lockdown was over. Just in time to get out of school!

The cause was figured out the next day and word spread around the school - an anonymous caller phoned the office to say they were going to shoot up the school. After the police searched the buildings and nothing turned up, it was concluded to be a prank.

posted a message on What Makes You Mad?
It happened again two hours ago.

I hate it when my dad goes on the computer, because it always spells trouble and more stress for me. Keep in mind I have some anxiety problems.

Every single time he goes on, he hard boots the poor computer when most of the time the computer has nothing to do with it, like this time.

The internet's been slow all day due to a problem either with the connection between the data stick and the tower or with the tower itself. Most likely, the tower was being overloaded with cell phone usage more than usual.

Not twenty minutes after dad hops on the computer to obsess about weather conditions, he walks into the living room to tell me he's restarted the computer. Outraged, I yelled, "WHY!?" and stormed into the office to find that he did a force shut down. Why? The internet was too slow for his liking. As a result I lost some posts I was in the process of typing among other more important things that I forgot to save in anticipation of his lunacy.

So I went to hunt down a highlighter to highlight the note I have taped right beside the monitor because it's clear my attempts to reason with him have failed. The note says:
There is NO NEED to reboot the computer.

I regularly clear the computer of useless files that clog up the memory. [This computer doesn't have enough room so we have a 1TB external hard drive.]
TWO anti-virus programs scan the computer daily for viruses and other malicious software. [To be updated as I got rid of one since it was useless, and I plan to add other software.]

    Thank you for co-operating! =)

Ps: When a large program/game is running, expect the computer to be slower than normal. It's not a miracle machine.

Well when I couldn't find a highlighter and asked mom if she knew where one was, my dad said, "I hope you're not going to highlight the note beside the computer." It's a miracle I didn't blow up at him at that point, because my mind was already sifting through what horrible things to say to him. So now I'm working on a print-out to teach my dad (and mom) what to look for when issues arise with the computer or internet, because rebooting the computer doesn't solve every problem in the world.

I've also told my dad over and over and over (and over) that he should EXPECT a slow-down of the computer when he opens a pdf file to pursue one of his obsessions (like wind turbines) and does not have to reboot the computer, to simply wait. What does he do? Open five or more pdf files and leaves them sitting in the task bar, sucking up precious memory, and reboot the computer because the computer was too slow for his liking. The computer has loading problems with pdf files, which I have told him every single time he opens one and whines and complains about how slow the computer is.

I repeat, it's not a miracle machine. It's at least five years old and was upgraded last February by my brother as best as possible given the funds. It's now a dual-core with 2GB of RAM along with other upgraded specs. It's not a quad-core 4GB+ RAM high-end PC (I wish).

I'm so angry and stressed out I feel like I'm going to get a hernia, hemorrhage, or something along those lines.

And I unwittingly posted a bit about this on Facebook without naming names and asking how to get the message to my dad (without naming him) about how rebooting the computer does (and didn't) solve the problem, and my sister comments with the starting words: "well that was rude."

Rude? Rude!? You call that rude?!? EXCUSE ME? I worded my post as carefully as possible because I hate being rude! What a wonderful addition to my angry state! She knows how stressed out I get about these things, and she's knowingly adding fuel to the fire. She always makes me regret posting ANYTHING, because her attitude makes me feel inferior and insignificant and more angry.

    tl;dr (too long; didn't read)?
My dad is computer illiterate and ignores my attempts to educate him, reboots the computer every time he uses it, and in the end I am very pissed off and stressed out about it.

Troubled sleep for me tonight. *huffs*

posted a message on Origin of your Forum Name?
Old name, long story. I'll cut it short.

In 2003 I was eleven years old and playing Neopets (the horror! lol). I was roleplaying with the Uni pets, and had one named Fallarii. Part of my plot with Fallarii was that she had an older sister named Fallaryn. I made up both of these names.

On December 24, 2003, I was introduced to Go-Gaia, and decided to use Fallaryn as my username, as I knew it was completely unique. To this day I have used the name on several forums and other sites. In some places where relevant I use my newer username, Prairie Orca (est. 2006), which is born from the fact that I was raised on the prairies and I love orcas.

As far as I can tell, you haven't done anything wrong - Minecraft.net itself is down. So, I think it's a problem on their end.

There might be an update in the News and Announcements forum acknowledging the downtime soon.

posted a message on why math?
In the case of being taught formulas that I will never use again in my life, I agree. That's why I quit pre-calculus. It's was stocked up on formulas that had no use for anything whatsoever - when I asked my teacher the point of these formulas, she changed the subject. At my high school there were three levels - consumer (easy), applied (moderate), pre-calculus (hard). In the end I went with applied math and find myself needing to use some of those formulas for everyday problem-solving (can't recall any at the moment).

Unless you absolutely need the complicated math course to get yourself into a college/university course you want/need, sometimes it's best to go for the easier math class and avoid the hassle, headaches, and missed meals.

@ blaster: Indeed. This problem is in Canada too. By grade six I loathed and dreaded school. I stopped striving for high marks and stopped doing my homework because the happiness and excitement behind them was gone. I missed more than half of grade nine because the stress of school contributed to extreme depression and anxiety. I was the student who missed the most days every year due to illnesses, caused by the stress of school which weakened my immune system. To this day (not even a year after graduating grade twelve) I still don't like education. I want to get into post-secondary, but I also don't want to because I know I will fail even if I try, and I don't want to waste money if I'm going to fail. For the time being I'm not in school, and because of that for the first time in my life I went more than four months without falling ill (I'm sick with said illness right now and I'm recovering at a normal pace, which is also a first).

posted a message on Does anybody play Minecraft Un-Modded anymore?
I just started playing today after a four-month hiatus. I have no mods and do not intend to add any. As for hosting a mod-free server... yes I have one, but I have no idea if my connection and my shoddy computer can support the server when other people use it, so for the time being it's private while I develop some landscaping (via Give so I don't totally destroy the automated beauty).

I had to figure out what "griefing" meant today. Back when I was playing that term didn't exist (if I remember correctly). Vanilla too. (Still hunting down a list of game lingo, here.)

In the case of my connection and computer being able to withstand hosting a public server, I'll just do the old-fashioned handling of complaints. (Warn, kick, ban.) If griefing becomes too much I might add something to deal with it.

If you want, Steedi, you can PM me and I'll give you the IP (hopefully it's right, lol) and you can help me figure out if my computer can handle the demand on a day-to-day basis. Right now monsters and PVP are off.

    posted a message on Appendicitis
Having a ruptured appendix can cause complications which can lead to death (such as peritonitis). Stay on the alert for any abdominal pains during your recovery. (I'm sure your doctor told you already, but I wrote it anyway just in case.)

Both of my parents had their appendixes removed when they were young - my dad had his taken out while he was getting his spleen stitched up after a biking accident when he was 14 years old. I'm waiting for the day when I get diagnosed with appendicitis... I keep getting abdominal pains that get confused with it, so I'm bound to "strike gold" sometime.

Wishing you have a problem-free, speedy recovery!
