A guide on how a poster can improve the forum
As of the time of writing, this topic has been repped 300 times, viewed 67109 times, and I've seen countless times of people using the material within to improve the forum or at least improve the criticisms abounding from it.
This is baffling. I am both honored to have so many people following this thread, approving of it.
I am humbled to see it still stickied for so very longThis was a good run :). Thank you all for reading and entertaining this thread. I want to thank all of you for reading this thread and trying to work by it and encourage you to continue to do so. At the same time, Please remember that this is written by a human hand, and your judgment is the most important and valuable asset you have.
Please follow your own judgment as you post and deal with others, and use this as a tool instead of as a "critic's bible". If this tells you one thing and the rules tell you otherwise, the rules ALWAYS have precedent. Thank you all for your time.
Theriasis and crew have created an unbelievably well written thread on what to avoid when posting a new suggestion. This is a tool that you can find pinned at the top of this forum and includes ways to be a better suggester. However, it is my personal belief that making a good suggestion is only half the battle. This is a detailed guide on how to effectively critique a suggestion.
There are times where we all (I am far from an exception here) do not wish to take a great deal of time to critique a suggestion. We would all just like to stamp a suggestion with a "no" and be on our merry way. To this end, I'd like to express the multitude of different ways where we can improve the forum, improve suggestions, and improve our chances to not get banned all to hell by simply doing our jobs (critiquing) without changing who we are.
I do not expect anyone or everyone to follow everything here word for word. At its most primitive, this is simply a codex of applied common sense. I only ask that you try your hardest to respect your fellow members.
This is not necessary to read but it exists in case problems arise from the multitude of different cases you meet while at the forum. While it's not necessary, it certainly won't hurt. It may be necessary if you have been warned for toxic behavior. I recommend you NOT read this entire guide at once, but one section at a time if you want to read all of it. (Give your brain a chance to chill, yo!)
Below is the table of contents detailing various problems I've seen.
The points I'd like to cover are:
⦁ Who am I and who are you?!
⦁ Sounding smart
⦁ Putting it all together
⦁ Already suggested
⦁ Effective criticising
⦁ The only thing that would make this topic better is if I accidentally killed it.
* I grief with clay!
⦁ Obviously, OP needs to hear the same criticism 300 times before he has a chance to respond.
⦁ tl;dr
⦁ The power of Report!
⦁ The package Combo
⦁ Slipping off the level playing field.
⦁ I can't think without you!
⦁ Denial of the fittest!
⦁ ALL CAPS MEANS I'M ANGRY!
⦁ This is bad as there is a flaw
⦁ Minecraft is ______
⦁ FTC caused MC to lag!
⦁ It's only obvious!
⦁ What to do when explanations aren't important.
⦁ Necro vs Rezzing
⦁ Infdev is the best Minecraft!
⦁ This is Minecraft, not ...
⦁ Replying and Snipping
⦁ Getting to the point by completely missing it
⦁ What the Heck is "championing"?
⦁ Tools of the trade
⦁ Notch doesn't know how to code
⦁ Duties of a critic
⦁ ♪Your wasting my time!♪
⦁ This is a suggestion!
APPENDIX LIST:
Nice Guides Finish Last
Before we begin, this guide is an attempt to show HOW you can remain yourself WHILE ALSO remaining within the forum rules. The premise is simple; you may not have to like the idea, but at least respect the poster. This is a difficult problem and one that I think we all can use help with.
CRITICIZE THAT!
The first thing I would like to state is what defines a critic and what the roles of a critic are.
This is very simple: In a given thread there are 2 people. The Original Poster is always qualified as the suggester. Anyone else who replies is a critic. I had a humorous PM conversation with a member here where he asked a few mock-up questions about the definitions so I'll get these out here so that it's easiest to answer before the questions are asked.
Q: What if the suggester posts a reply to his suggestion?
A: He's still the suggester as it's his post.Q: What if the suggester has an alternate account?
A: He's still the suggester.Q: What if the alt disagrees with the suggester?
A: He's still the suggester though I would recommend a shrink.[not asked]Q: What about the site admins?
A: as OP, suggester. As replier, critic.
AHEM
Critics are counterparts to the suggester. They are there to praise the good and criticize the bad elements of a suggestion. Often, the critic will offer blind praise with 1.5 million (conservative estimate) smilies. This is an acceptable if not totally obnoxious method.
I define the term critic for use in these forums as: A critic is a poster whom replies to the suggestion with feedback remaining impartial and unbiased toward the original poster and suggestion, discussing the suggestion in terms of balance, flow, implementation, quality, usefulness, conceptualization, and understandability.
I understand the above is a tall order to handle and it is not expected of a poster to cover every part of these details in his reply; however, covering these points allows the suggester some serious and helpful detail to improve his post and is valuable even if you personally agree with the suggestion (more on that below).
top
SUPPORTING DETAILS
Supporting details are something you'll see as a recurring theme here. What are supporting details? They're what makes your criticism relevant. They're what makes your criticism valid. They're what makes your criticism worth reading and worth replying to.
If you make a criticism and you're running into a ton of hate, you probably neglected this part.
They're actually more important than the criticism itself. Seriously. Even if the actual criticism is faulty; the supporting details are what allow others to see your thought process.
If you don't have enough time to give supporting details to back up your criticism, you don't actually have the time to make the criticism.
top
EFFECTIVE CRITICIZING
I am many things: impulsive, brash, arrogant, take your pick. I'm nowhere near crazy enough to suggest that there's a catch all method or way to criticize without encountering counters or opposition. There's just too many ways; and the scope and needs vary according to the suggestion in question, amount of content that needs to be addressed, other already pressed criticisms, etc. With that said, the actual scope of criticising may be immense; but they all boil down to two things.
1) the criticism/assertion – what you're criticising. It can be anything from too much lag, OP, imba, personal distaste, prevalence of related existing entities/concepts, etc.
2) the supporting details – why you're criticising? What is the thought process? This does not have to be perfect. It can be based in logic, speculation, or reasoning. However, it does have to be thoughtful. People have strong rationale and reasoning that sometimes doesn't conform to logic. Others have solid logic that frustratingly doesn't apply to behavior. Sometimes what you bring to the table is flawed. That's fine, so long as there's a root in perspective and you're okay with amending the view. The more technical or specific the criticism, the more supporting details you need to bring. i.e. If you bring a criticism of “lag city” for example: you should have a basic level of how Minecraft works and a competent ability to explain the lag or you'll meet a LOT of resistance.
This isn't going to win you any Mark Twain awards for literature, and there's a ton of other things that go into it; but so long as you have those 2 parts, you'll have the basic ingredients of a criticism.
Also, freeform quick-fire questions are also really useful here. Sometimes the best you can do to stimulate a suggestion is ask about the stats of a mob or recommend stats. This is most useful when discussing mobs, biomes, or consumables; but can be used in a lot of areas where a few questions are all that's needed to engage OP and promote discussion.

AS!!!
Screaming "Already Suggested" at a common idea is tantamount to spam. Yes, you heard me right. Do not state "already suggested" unless you have another one to reference. The reason is simple; the game is 5+ years old, it has a fan base where every (practically) member has posted a suggestion on the board. This game has MILLIONS of players; and millions others who would LIKE to play the game. They all contribute to the trash heap.
What are the chances of ANY suggestion ANYONE has come up with would be original by now? Law of averages is not on your side. "Already suggested" becomes a categoric insult at this point, and more statement of the obvious akin to typing "This is a collection of words on a bulletin board system". Thanks, Cleetus; we got that.
This thread was originally created before the rule of being able to create a new thread if a previous incarnation has been dead for one month or longer. With this said, if a suggestion _is_ redundant, don't blindly scream "already suggested", instead. Find a previous, more relevant, thread and link there. Report the thread. Do not tell the suggester he is being reported.
If you wish to be helpful before the inevitable lock, instead of telling the OP to use search; instead search for him, offer your choice thread as a link to check out; and then report the thread for lock. Again, Don't tell the OP he's being reported.

NO!Unfortunately, "no"-- while valid (a statement of dislike, which means that the suggestion is not perfect) -- is not a very helpful criticism. Where does the poster improve his suggestion? What hallmarks does he go by?
Remember that one-word and two-word responses like "no" and "don't like" are against the rules. The reasoning is very simple; they do not help. Yes, they are your opinions and they are criticisms; but they help in the same way as the engine light coming on in a car. Yes, there is a problem... Now... Where?
To effectively criticize, it is important to have your personal views and beliefs take a back seat. Remember that this is a suggestion for inclusion into the game for ALL players. The OP may not have back-seated his bias, but a critic should. While cases of "I personally don't see myself using this." or "I do not prefer this mechanic" are definitely valid arguments, the OP CANNOT use this to strengthen his post. How can he improve it if you are fundamentally opposed to the basic premise? you can't? Exactly! Backseat your concerns.
What "actual" reasons do you have to say no? Difficulty? Mechanics? Cost? Fundamental problems?
Keep in mind that even if you say YES to a suggestion, it is desirable to post criticisms to further cement and improve the idea.
Finally, if you can't find a good thing to say about the suggestion; it takes less energy to press back and ignore it than it does to reply with "no". If you're going to be lazy, then be lazy.

TL;DR
Ever see an epic length suggestion that you cannot find the time to read? Ever post TL;DR? Yeah?! Don't.
TL;DR is NOT a breakdown in communication, it is a refusal to do so. TL;DR means you haven't read the suggestion, so you HONESTLY have no freaking idea what the suggestion is talking about in the first place, so you are admitting that you don't understand the concept of the thread; won't bother to understand it, and are speaking totally from the limited scope of your voided personal opinion. This is a personal pet peeve, and one that a serious critic should stamp out as quickly as possible.
Expectedly (It's almost a slippery slope except this one is a predictable and regularly arrived-at result) this is considered flaming.
top
KILLING ME WITH KINDNESS
"Killing me with kindness" is all about killing the very thread you're trying to promote. This is usually done by brick-walling discussion with "support" or "partial support".
Look guys, I think it's neat-o that you support the suggestion, but adding in your thoughts or feelings on why you like it, which settings you can use it in, or what would make the suggestion even better. Otherwise, keep it to yourself. No one wants to read blind or baseless praise.
Often the good intentions of the poster may end up creating a red herring that can distract the discussion. In cases of a new thread, these good intentions are not enough to spark meaningful conversation to keep the thread alive. If you like the thread, and want to promote it; then find creative ways to spark conversation to keep it thriving instead of just going with a little “support” or “parsup”.
Supporting details, even when positive!

GOOD GRIEF
This one is about the tried and true criticism that yoshi9048 definitely can't touch! "People could use this for griefing!"
Or... maybe, just maybe... I might have something to say about it. STOP IT! Now brah, I know what you're thinking; but hear me out! Put your ear to your monitor and hear the words on this screen! Alright, now that everyone near you thinks you're crazy; I'm going to say "stop using it". It's copy pasta. It's basically the can of soup argument all over again. You easily can apply this criticism to a can of soup and be correct!
In fact, "it can be used for griefing" is so ubiquitous that I wouldn't be surprised if it outweighed Herobrine on the suggestions forum. Why do I say that? I can think of any item or feature already in Minecraft and state with full certainty and without batting an eye; it can be used to grief. Name anything, and I can create a paranoid system where it can be abused to devastating effect by anyone with an inclination to use it in such a way.
Which is to say, the suggestion is being denied by something outside of the scope of the suggestion; the malicious intent of another individual. This is the suggestions forum, not the server-nanny forum. With that being said; if you have a solid and plausible case where the idea can be easily exploited or abused unwittingly; then feel free to post your argument; but be very careful to keep your "it can be used to grief" to cases where a lot of detrimental harm can come from a suggestion with few positive elements.
DOG PILING
Dogpiling is bad, also don't dogpile. Make sure you don't dogpile while you're at it. If you could be so kind, don't dogpile. So this one is an issue that arises from what I'd consider a non-issue.
The NON-ISSUE: Echoing Fury - multiple critics make the same criticism, neglectful (whether intentional or just from lack of reading a (often multiple page long) thread) of other's contributions.
The ISSUE: Group Bullying. Let me explain. As people are ridiculed for an error in judgment or logical flow, it becomes more natural to demonize the outgroup. You, as the in-group would naturally feel justified. In the right. There is obvious social pressure to continue to castigate the suggester. Repeating the same criticisms as others, becoming more empowered to dehumanize the OP. As a thread progresses, and redundant criticism piles on; so does the appearance of a relaxation toward rules and decorum. At the end, it's possible that the OP of these threads are not even seen as worthy of basic human respect anymore, which is disingenuous at best.
The non-issue is always there. Solidarity of opinion is quite important. It allows the poster to know that it's not an isolated opinion, but a genuine problem with his design. This type of feedback, especially when given by multiple sources from different regions is always a good thing.
The issue is there though. And it's magnified by OPs natural denial. Being told that an idea you commit to the aether as a representative of you; your identity, your tastes, is now considered "bad" or "flawed" is humbling. It's a hard pill to swallow, I'd expect anyone to become recalcitrant toward the criticism. But when these criticisms are aggregated by multiple posters. It's easy to feel like you're being bullied. It doesn't help when critics instinctively ARE bullying due to falsely-perceived relaxed restrictions.
The point here is what I call dogpiling. It's where one person is tackled, and increasing number of people add to the weight of the tackle. While it's a good idea to show solidarity of opinion, if a critic already handled the criticism; there's not much point in restating it. It's already there. Use your up-votes if you agree. Try to avoid turning ugly.
Remember, these suggesters help keep the community alive. Work with them, become their friend. They could one day become a great force for a forum. The last thing we need is for you to drag down the forum by forming a collective mob identity.

REPORTED!!!
There is a nifty button below each player's avatar that allows the poster untold power.
Well, not really. However, you will find the Report button under each person. I want to go over the basic etiquette of using it, when you should, and when you shouldn't.
The report button does not ban the poster, nor does it shoot lightning bolts. It simply brings attention to a moderator to allow them to sort out the problem. However, it is a vital tool and necessary to use on several occasions.
One thing I would like to note to everyone, not simply critics; if you are to report someone, don't be THAT guy. You know. Don't be the one that goes and tells the person that they've been reported. All that causes is petty revenge scheming and forces things downhill. You know that road to hell? You'd be walking it.
I'll list it this way. If you're going to report someone:
1) do NOT tell the person he's being reported.
2) do NOT tell the person he's being reported.
3) report him
4) do NOT tell the person he's being reported.
5) do NOT tell the person he's being reported.
6) press back and leave the threadDO NOT TELL THE PERSON HE'S BEING REPORTED. I can't be any clearer, consider this to be your warning.
It is important to note that it is wise to use the Report button when material is questionable or worse. If you have a gut feeling that the post is against the rules, but can't put your finger on it; report with a full reason. If you're wrong, no harm no foul. If you're right, the post will be locked/deleted and the poster may/may-not receive a warning/ban or possibly a slap on the wrist in a worst case.
Here are what I view as no-harm-no-foul reports because the poster isn't harshly punished.
⦁ Wishlists - LOCKED
⦁ Posted in wrong forum - MOVED
⦁ Redundant Suggestion - LOCKED
⦁ Off topic - LOCKEDMild to major penalties arise from flaming, trolling, disrespect to admins/fellow members, continuously locked or moved topics.
Insta-ban penalties arise from hate (religious, gender, racial prejudice), trivializing horrendous events (trivializing the holocaust for the lolz >_>), or pornography.
Remember that reporting is a right of forum members; treat it and others with respect.

AS EASY AS TV DINNER!
This section is all about prepackaged criticisms and my general response to them. "Don't use them". Consider: If you can pick up a criticism and use it toward a can of tomato soup; it's probably not stable enough to use as a criticism of another member's work. Prepackaged (also called ad lib or copypasta cop-outs by me) criticisms are:
⦁ This would cause lag.
⦁ This isn't very popular.
⦁ This would be too hard to code.
⦁ Vague
⦁ Not enough detail
⦁ Too much detail
⦁ You can do this in command blocks
⦁ I don't think it would fitThese criticisms by themselves are horrible. If you want them to go from a useless waste of time to an actual criticism, you can start by validating your points with SUPPORTING DETAILS. Ahhh, it rears its ugly head again!
Let me be frank, unless you bother to add supporting details to your opinion; you DO NOT HAVE ONE.
I added "you can do this in command blocks" to this list for the very same reason. I can do EVERYTHING with command blocks, rendering practically every game mechanic obsolete. Command blocks cannot be used in many maps and are inaccessible without going OP. Because of this, this fails as a criticism.

THINK OF THE POOR FISH!
That reminds me. Here's another prepackaged/canned response to stop using. Of course, I'm talking about the slippery slope fallacy. If political pundits aren't able to use this without getting caught; and they have literal dozens of hours of training. There is no way an average person with no rhetorical, debate, or classical training will do any better (especially since debate and classical training trains you to avoid such responses).
So, what is slippery slope? It's where a suggestion has an unverifiable consequence without any link used to deny support. "We shouldn't add this new food because than everyone would want more food types. What's next, eating the bone marrow of skeletons?"
Y'know... Sometimes OP simply wants to add radish and radish related dishes to the game without the inclusion of any other vegetable or type of food. It just might be a thing... OR... Maybe if he WANTED other foods, he'd place them in another thread as it belongs with its own discussion.
Or, in a worst case scenario, the absolute worst case happens; this opens a door where the suggestions forum is flooded with dozens of related suggestions. This forum has (as of writing) 3128 pages of suggestions. Creating that 3129th page is going to create a time paradox that destroys universe within the greater multiverse, right?... No? Oh, then what's the issue?
Let's get back to why I say it's prepackaged garbage. Take any suggestion. ANY suggestion. Even golden ones like colored light, muskets, new biomes, etc. For added fun, let's use your suggestion. Just fill in the blank.
"If they added ___your_suggestion___ then people will want ___random_guff_that_I_think_up___. What next? ___outlandish_and_unrealistic_demands_that_have_nothing_to_do_with_OP___?!"
If they added _ then people will want _. What next? _?!
You see how easy that is? You can literally copy and paste that and enter in the fields. It's so easy I even did half the work for you. Or, how about you don't? I've already shown how this argument fails; just stop using it. Thanks!
top
POLLING THE AUDIENCEPolling the audience is where you form your reason for approval or denial according to what you see as a norm.
"Not many people like wolves, so I'll say no here."
"Most people do not like this"
"This idea is unpopular"
"Wow, everyone said no to this suggestion, it must be crappy. No."
If you are going to deny something with the above or something similar, don't type anything, press back. Seriously, I don't want to read it. No one cares what you have to add to a suggestion. Why should they? What you have to say is easily swayed simply by conformity. Effectively, you don't have an opinion. Even if you did, how fickle would that opinion be? How much peer pressure would it take to change your mind? If your entire argument crutched on the amorphous blob that routinely changes standards of conformity; you become as amorphous and shambling at the group. Your opinion is not reliable as it's not influenced by points, counterpoints, or actual discussion. Your opinion is only reliant on "I hope I don't make X person or X group angry." You are invalidated.
If your post is only reflective of what you think is the majority's desire, then shut up and let the majority talk for you. You aren't representing yourself, you're representing what you THINK the majority likes. No one needs that. What do YOU think? What YOU think is important. Everyone knows what the majority thinks, all of the majorities. You don't have to parrot it back out.
Also, if you make someone angry for speaking your mind, who cares? Do you care? Why? So what if you make someone angry? They'll get over it, and hey, they may actually respect you for actually having the brass to stand on your laurels instead of sponging your opinion from someone else. Are you going to be a carpet to be walked on? Or are you going to form an opinion and speak it? There will always be people willing to be walked on; doesn't mean you have to fill that role.

I TOO AM THE WORKFLOW DIRECTOR OF MOJANG
This one is the "workflow director" problem. Refusing support of a suggestion because you think "Mojang should work on bugs/mobs/blocks/PvP/etc." is a stupid reason to deny support.
Here's the quick and dirty:
1) There is no room for communication. I mean, where does the OP go? Does he agree? Disagree? Who cares? You stalled communication while adding nothing to it.2) The path you feel prudent for Mojang to take is inconsequential. They'll go their own path, if you want Mojang to work on a mob instead of a suggestion, THEN MAKE MOB SUGGESTIONS.
3) How the nether jelly fish is the OP supposed to not only PREDICT what you're going to say, but then make a post that affirms with you?! It's egotistical and impossible. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING the OP can do to remedy the suggestion as the only solution they have is to redirect the thread to in-line with your desired goals. Again, a selfish and irrational demand.
4) You are not the gatekeeper. You don't have an actual concept of Mojang's timetable and are in no position to demand what they should or should not work on next. Until you become president of Mojang, stop pandering to this criticism.
5) It's not a criticism. It's off-topic banter that has absolutely no bearing on a discussion. It's also modular; I can literally pick up and drop this argument into anything that isn't related to the criticism.
6) It's lazy, and if you're trying to be lazy, you just failed. Press BACK, that's even lazier and you don't have to task yourself with copypasta and posting.

MELODRAMATIC RAGE!!!
Have you ever seen a suggestion you are so completely opposed to that your hair grays, your teeth start chipping, and you get an actual case of osteoporosis? No? No one does? Then stop acting like that, melodrama mama.
"THIS IS THE WORST SUGGESTION IT'LL NEVER GET ADDED AND I HOPE YOU DIE!" - First of all, turn your 10 into a 2. Second of all, statements like that will get you in jail. You're not Hulk, and gamma radiation causes cancer and death, stop 'roiding everywhere.
There is a small finite number of reasons you should ever show such bittering and all-consuming rage that it can only be expressed in torrid fits and ceaseless howls. In these occurrences, it's understandable that you SLAM ALL CAPS, KILL THE CRAP OUT OF [SHIFT]+1 (!), AND ACT LIKE YOU JUST GOT YOUR LEG CHOPPED OFF BY A RUSTY CHAINSAW!
Here's the expansive list: Revenge; Betrayal; Rape; Loss of family/friends; Excruciating Pain; prolonged starvation; violation of personal inalienable rights. Here's a highly abridged list of times you SHOULDN'T use such behavior: Someone makes a post you disagree with on the Internet.
Look, I understand that someone says something you don't like. Get over it! People say things I disagree with all the time, it's called COMMUNICATION. I use it to convey my ideas and responses, calmly to others until an agreement can be attained.
Saying "THIS IS THE WORST SUGGESTION IN THE PLANET AND WILL NEVER BE ADDED!" Only makes you look like a backwards ignorant idiot that totally refuses to communicate. This is basically the TL;DR rule all over again. If you don't plan to actually communicate, GET OFF THE FORUM. that's what the forum is there for, communicating, agreeing, disagreeing, and reaching equitable compromises.
I don't care if it's popular to hate on an idea, or if you were trying to be "cute" or "prove a point", I'm going to prove a point right now, if you type it then you look like an idiot, STFU and GTFO because I don't want to read it. It's not cute, funny, charming, or inspiring; it's only hateful and inciteful.
What can you say instead? "I disagree" - provide a reason, and go away. If you decide to go all BANE over a post and I happen to read it, I'll make a mockery out of you.
Save your melodrama for more important things than someone you'll never meet having an opinion. We have actual HUMAN EVENTS that occur that more deserve your pitiable overcompensating emotions than the first-world problem that someone feels differently over a video game.

I notice a flaw and now I'm going to harp on it!
Have you ever entered a well-made thread and had this unsettling feeling that you simply did not like the suggestion? You couldn't put your finger on it; and the rebellious part of your soul cried to be different with every positive review you've ever read? Finally, your saving grace comes! You notice a slight error in the OP's well-groomed and manicured suggestion and now the entire thing is a pile of crap!
Congratulations! You found an error in a well groomed and manicured suggestion! However, you're wrong, the suggestion is not a pile of crap and you are not a genius for pointing it out, merely a savant.
As you may have guessed, coming up with piddling trifles for denying a suggestion (untested and unverified numbers are not to your liking despite the author's repeated statements that the numbers are subject to change) (You dislike the color of the suggested mob) (the suggestion is not thematic) or other things is a cop-out.
If you can see dozens of possible applications and potential uses that you would PERSONALLY wish to obtain, why sweat the small stuff and deny the entire suggestion for one misgiving?
Though this hasn't personally hit me as annoying, I've seen fellow members grow fiercely agitated by this.
Yes, it is important to mention and note these problems as they are problems; but don't be cheap and expect perfection from very different imperfect beings. Don't deny support because something as trivial and alterable as mob color is giving you the blues.

Minecraft is this!
This isn't an issue in its own right. Many issues arise from what I like to call "hasty denial".
Concepts such as "too futuristic", "overpowered", "not thematic" are not intrinsically bad reasons for denying a reason. However, if they are provided without supporting details, they become SPAM.
Ahh, “supporting details”, that phrase again.
As a critic, it is your job to detail WHY you decline the suggestion. "not thematic" is not detailing, it's giving a reason. However, unless you support your reason; it is highly circumstantial and can be argued. You're there to post a reasonable discussion as to WHY you feel it's not thematic, not lead the OP into a meaningless debate.
It's a point of order, if your criticism is one or fewer sentences, save yourself the energy and don't post. "This is too futuristic" can be argued for ANY concept from wolves to pistons to laser rifles.
*ATTACKING THE HYDRA*
The hydra is a great mythological serpent from Greek myth which grows two new heads for each that is chopped off. It is considered to be a plague, killing thousands in its wake; and was only killed when Heracles cauterized each of the heads after chopping them off.
Now that we got that bit of Greek mythology out of the way; let me tell you what OUR forum hydra is. "Minecraft is __" often the blank is medieval, steampunk, etc. In any of these cases, you're wrong.
For The Critics has one of four lessons: Commit completely or don't commit at all, use common sense, communication is important, and have supporting details. This one waxes poetic on common sense, so expect this one to be straightforward.
"Doesn't fit" works in that way. If you were EVER curious what the exact theme of Minecraft was, it doesn't have one. I use 3 measures to legitimize this statement. The MEDIAN level of technology, the most proficient technology, and the difference between these two. The median technological level of Minecraft is pre-renaissance if we were to define it using Earth as a reference. I'd say 13th~14th century Europe would be a proper equivalent. However, the most advanced technology in the game is early/mid-20th century with the use of hoppers, trapped chests, pistons, and automated systems. Here's the problem: there's a 700-year UNEXPLAINED gulf between MC's common technology and MC's high technology. This makes its actual theme impossible to state using Earth as a reference.
Because of this, stating MC as medieval or steampunk or classical or neo-industrial would be incorrect. Instead of approving or denying a suggestion based off of an assumed setting; instead deny it or approve it on the only metric that WORKS: Intermediate Technology.
Intermediate - between
Technology - utilization of science.
In this case, intermediate technology simply means "technology that must exist for other technology to make sense." As an example: sticky pistons don't make sense unless you have pistons first. Trapped Chests require chests and tripwire hook. Smelting iron requires a furnace. Etc. As you can see, the idea is to base a suggestion's "fitting" on anything that allows it to fit instead of some flawed proposed setting.
There we go, I've attacked the hydra. Let's hope it did anything.

THE LAGUMENTI was hoping I wouldn't have to add this; I was hoping the community would get this. I was wondering why people were still posting this. Then I saw that it wasn't added, people didn't see it as a "rule". So now, everywhere I go, I see people screaming "LAAAAGGG" like it means something.
Unless you justify this statement, it's unjustified. Your opinion is worthless because you haven't given it any worth. All you're doing is bumping your post count. You probably didn't even READ the thread before assuming "lol, too hard, lag"; and for many of you, you'll probably take offense here (because someone caught your lazy butts red-handed). Patience and hope for humanity has it's place, the Minecraft forums are not one of them; and because of this, this section has made a home here.
What's a "lagument"? Lagument is a portmanteau (a silly French word where you cross the word and meaning of two words to form a new word with both meanings (like modem or batarang) of lag and argument; and is often used across the board by everyone that can't find a good reason to deny a suggestion.
Can't think of a good reason to deny a suggestion you don't like? Don't like the OP? Simply say "too much lag" and be on your merry way. The problem here is that you can apply "too much lag" to EVERY SUGGESTION in this game, other sand boxes, any pc game, any console game, all games period, movies, music, pictures, any interactive media whatsoever, books, and your grandma. It's NOT A CRITICISM.
Look, this argument is stupid. "It would cause a lot of lag" or "It would probably cause lag". Unless you actually place HARD NUMBERS and REASONABLE ARGUMENTS to corroborate your assertion, you likely don't know enough about WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT to tell anyone what THEY'RE talking about. People that DO know what they're talking about will know YOU DON'T KNOW what you're talking about; and they'll call you out on it; you'll salt your own turf, call the entire community "haters/trolls" and never visit the forum again.
This is a cop-out, an unreasoned, and unprepared reason to simply deny a suggestion. Use it at your own risk. Please bear in mind that this excludes well organized and fully explained reasons for "lag" denial. It's not a fine line either; you either know what you're talking about or you don't. Because of this, be prepared to DETAIL and DEFEND your lag denial with actual facts.
Properly doing so will have one of three effects:
1) The thread is completely shut down.
2) The OP will make some bogus claim of "just upgrade your computer" or try to assuage the problem by ignoring it; trivializing it; or redirecting to keep a positive spin on a topic you thoroughly destroyed.
3) The OP will ignore you or insult you and proceeds to salt his own turf.

I mean, everyone knows that!
One of the things that isn't really prominent but does tend to grind at me a bit is a sentiment of universal understanding. Getting this train started right to ship off all this fail; "UNIVERSAL UNDERSTANDING" does not exist. Heck, it's a struggle to settle for "PARTIAL" understanding. Compromise? Is that an alcoholic beverage?
The first thing that any critic should do is assume that everyone on the page has the relative IQ of tree sap. The second thing that any critic should do is assume that these people are unwilling to change their views unless a significant amount of evidence contradicts their personal beliefs. At which point, you'll still have die-hards holding onto their reality to the point where proof exists as a mere contrivance and is as fraudulent as the poster regardless of verifiable claims.
To this point; there is no true understanding as we all live different lives. We have all had different past experiences. Perhaps you are the victim of domestic abuse; perhaps you grew up in a broken home; perhaps your parents are victims of chemical addiction (drugs and/or alcohol).
These all are measures which define us and show us how truly different we are from one another. One person can take a simple word and define it completely different from another.
The point of all of this is: Unless you have a frame of reference, nothing is obvious, and nothing is self-evident.
Keep in mind that I mention "frame of reference" for a reason. We can all make a safe assumption that everyone on Earth has seen rain and can obviate that each droplet of precipitate is "wet" and unabridged exposure to the precipitation will get the target entity wet as well.
However, frames of reference cannot be tacked on carelessly to any situation. This is where most people (independent of their intellect/education) screw up. A physicist may be able to describe the nature of the atom; and a meth-head may be able to make meth in his "lab", but it doesn't mean that the physicist would understand how to make meth any more than the meth-head could split the atom.
I've seen too many posters hone in with "DO U HONESTLY NOT NO THAT IT WERKS LIK DIS!?" You know; they may have an IQ of 180 and NOT know that. Just because you know a useless bit of trivia doesn't mean everyone does; open your scope and learn to accept differences in others.
Until you do this; expect to get warned and banned and flamed yourself.

I have the final word!
CREDITS FOR THIS SECTION: ANONTHEMOUSE
There is a distressing habit in posters to say things like "end of discussion", "/thread", or perhaps worst of all "this will never be added".
You really do not want to be the one to say one of these. Like the person in a horror movie who confidently states, "We're safe now.", you're setting yourself up to be proven tragically wrong. You may be feeling quite proud of yourself for delivering what you see as a final killing blow to a bad idea, but that isn't how it's going to turn out. In fact, saying that the issue is settled will almost guarantee that it continues, as people offended by your flippant tone either ignore your post outright, or continue arguing just to make you wrong.
Worse, statements such as these can weaken your position, not just for yourself, but for anyone else who agrees with you. In the first place, it gives an obvious error of judgement that others can use to call your other assessments into question. More to the point, though, these kinds of statements make you look desperate. It's basically an admission of defeat. If your arguments are sound, you don't need to tell people that they are. If you're really certain that the issue is settled, then you shouldn't need to say so. So when you do, it conveys the implication that your position is too weak to stand up to challenge from others, and you're just trying to get them to leave before they see the little man behind the curtain (as it were). Saying an idea will never be added is worse. Take a tally of how many things in the game right now were once certain to "never be added". Now, consider what making this statement means for your post... It raises the question, "Why are you even posting?" If the idea itself is so bad that it shouldn't be used, your posting is just bumping the topic, and getting it more attention. On the other hand, if the idea is really so inconsistent with the theme of Minecraft as to never be included, no matter how it's suggested/argued, posting is a waste of time. Because of this, it shouldn't come as any surprise if, when you state the absolute impossibility of an idea, no one believes you.

Grave Robbing for Dummies
First note I would like to make: There is a difference between necroing a thread and reviving/resurrecting one. The difference is in bump quality.
A personal definition for necro is a spam post like "bump" or similar "I disagree" or other non-constructive post. This is frowned upon and causes a great number of moderators to burn the zombified thread with a quick lock. The only reason you should ever post in any topic is because you have something useful to add to it. A statement of +1 or No adds nothing useful; therefore, the topic gets locked (in direct opposition to the desired effect.)
While necroing is against the rules, I personally feel that objectively reviving a thread with pertinent argument and qualifying discussion is not. Simply because a thread is as old as dirt does not mean it is dead, especially if it is better written and more pertinent than the current counterparts that exist.
It is POSSIBLE to resurrect old threads, but it must be done with care and great respect to the original poster and the thread itself.
Here's the playbook:
I have found the powerful blows of the mod-hammer have not fallen on my conscientious efforts to revive a valid and worthwhile thread despite age.
It is important to remember to use sound judgment on whether to revive a topic or not. If you cannot properly add information to a topic, then it may not be as acceptable as you may think.
If a thread was made in 1.3 and it's content is out of date, it's a bad idea to revive it.
If a thread was made with poor grammatical structure and is only a sentence, it is a bad idea to revive it.
Save your revivals only for those things truly deserving to be revived.

Perfection was achieved in Alpha!
This is for you nostalgia clowns. It's not really a statement of proper etiquette or technique. It's more of a base-line question. Why? Why are you in suggestions? Why are you posting at all? You already have the perfect version; you can go back to it at any time.
To carry this sentiment, you can understand why adopting this mentality as a "reason" for denial is a bit pathetic; I'd hope. If you don't like a suggestion because you play in an earlier version and don't think it'd work because of that, shut up. It won't affect you anyway. How do I know? You're playing a DIFFERENT version. It's a recursive self-answering question.
"I play 1.6.1 because I don't like baby zombies, and this suggestion would just make them more stupid!" - you invalidated yourself because you flat won't be affected. At all.
"I don't support bc then everyone else would just load a different version." First, you don't know that. Second, shut up, you don't have the knowledge or authority to speak for everyone else. Third, your statement becomes immediately invalid the second someone disagrees with you and loves the idea. Stop being bad.

If I wanted this, I'd play God of War
This annoys me.Someone saying no to an idea simply because it may have something in common with another game. Given ANY idea I have ever seen and my limited grasp of games I have personally played; I can say NO to just about every idea that presents itself because I've seen it before. Seriously, no one cares if you saw the idea in another game as long as it's theme and usage conforms to Minecraft.
That is not to say that blatantly ripping off mechanics from existing games is a good thing; but when a player comes up with an idea, it should not be shut down simply because there is a tenuous generalization of an implementation in another game.
Broaden your methods of critiquing if that's the best critique you can come up with because this is lame.

And I quote!!!If you have read everything so far; you may have picked out a common running theme. "Don't be lazy!" or more adequately, "Don't half-finish!"
One such case that isn't really well known is hastily replying; especially on these forums. When you reply to a post, you quote the entire post you are replying to (minus their quotes). This is obnoxious especially when replying to an already lengthy OP. People like reading the OP the first time, reading it again, or simply scrolling past it is obnoxious.
It's simple enough, don't be lazy, crop the post or delete the reply you are quoting unless it is relevant. You can use "*snip*" if you would like; but it is understandable and preferable that you AT LEAST cut at all. This saves other readers unnecessary stress, and allows everyone to get the full picture.
top
What you're trying to say is...
This has been a no tolerance card for me for a while.Despite the fact that the OP/other discusser has made a POST that you can QUOTE at ANY time and reread to your heart's content; posters decide to use this colloquialism. Stop! it's the internet equivalent of being dropped on your head repeatedly.
You don't need to infer what the partner of discussion said, it's WRITTEN right there. When you say something witty like "What you're trying to say is -" you are literally putting words in the other person's mouth. Don't do that. This is literally straw-manning. It's also admitting you didn't read what the other person posted but are instead reinterpreting and distorting their message; even well intentioned, it's obnoxious. This is insulting, unverifiable, and plain wrong. Don't do it.
Q: "But Yoshi? What are we supposed to say then?"
A: If it's a discussion, then don't infer anything. If something someone said doesn't make sense or needs clarification; ASK FOR CLARIFICATION instead of shoving your words in their mouth. I cannot be any more serious about this.

I claim this topic in the name of...
Champions... What the HECK AM I TALKING ABOUT? What does it mean to "champion a thread", and why do I preach so highly about it? There's probably a much better colloquial term than what I use, I am known to make up terms to describe actions when I can't find the proper term.
Becoming a champion means you fully support a topic and will defend it and the original poster. You keep the topic alive, and help the OP through the inevitable waves of argument, you essentially become a "champion" of the thread, keeping it alive. You become the thread's hero. Sound cool? See why I have difficulty coining it as anything but "championing?"
This means you do not do anything to get the thread locked (flaming, insulting, tend to do this quick, avoid that) while calmly and respectfully refuting well-intentioned and well-made arguments.
Well, buckle down and put on that cape because you got heroing to do. While a champion's goal may be the preservation of a thread, his job is also to make that thread much more powerful, prestigious, and shiny. He does this by seeking other similar threads, referring them to the championed thread, and reporting the similar thread for lock due to redundancy.
Remember, it is OK to post "already suggested" as long as you provide a link to reference. Use this to your advantage as you dismiss other threads in preference to the gem you have found.

My rubric says...You cannot please them all, you will find more than your fair share of bull-headed, ignorant, and downright stupid OPs which cannot accept criticism and pull the troll card far faster than they can make a legitimate string of letters. They will double and triple post their counter-arguments. Do NOT follow them down the road to Hell, though it is tempting to bat at their flailing limpid attempts. This will get you banned/warned along with them.
Occasionally, you'll have GOOD and DECENT posters which will engage in lively debate. As a critic, you should really only have 3 or so major criticisms. Any more and the suggestion is nearly irrecoverably bad without a massive overhaul. Any less, and the suggestion is not really detailed or the suggestion is well done. Keep these criticisms in mind as you reply.
If the OP has encountered your objections and successfully overcome them, offer counter-criticisms. If he overcomes them; then simply stop. If there isn't an issue, don't create one. Forcing issues creates senseless flame wars. Know when to stop, and STOP at that line. While it may seem like 3 issues isn't much; consider that there are likely several others with other issues.
Again remember to backseat your emotions and bias toward a suggestion while criticizing. It is often a good idea to keep a personal rubrick or outline so you can plot all that is wrong with the suggestion.
The goal here is to avoid flame wars by not instigating one. Limiting your criticisms is a good way of doing so.,

This cannot be coded
Thanks badprenup for pointing this out... When a good suggestion is declined because it is too hard to code. Says who?
It's too hard to code? For you? For Notch? How do you know it's too hard to code? Do you have a master's degree in computer science? Do you create the JAVA interpreter for Oracle? Are you a professional video game designer whom can create a complete game in 1/2 a day? If you are none of the above, the complaint of "Too hard to code" is irrelevant and is seen as a really sloppy cop-out for when a good reason to decline cannot be made.
"It's Impossible to code" is even worse. This assertion states that no one, in the entire world, among modders and professional coders, could ever add the suggestion. The problem here is the principle of perfection. The moment a SINGLE PERSON codes it, the suggestion is no longer impossible. Congratulations, you just salted your own turf and made yourself look like an idiot. I mean, "too hard to code" is a sloppy and shameful cop-out, but at least there's room for subjective denial. There's no recovery here.
"Oh, that person just doesn't have a life." - Is that a counter? So... Wait... Not only were you proven wrong, but proven wrong by someone you consider "socially inferior" after they ONLY TRIED TO HELP YOU. Way to make yourself look even more like a jerk. Also, what's worse than someone with no life? Whatever it is, you just filled that position.

Roles of a critiche made a base idear expandings our job
Have you seen anything like this? Ever felt like this? This is a common viewpoint for many posters, and I'm not sure where this came from. It certainly isn't in the rules; and it certainly hasn't passed my ears, though I'm sure that the treacherous corruptive whispers of Nidhoggr have yet to reach me.
I'd like to state first of all, NO. This is not our job. Expanding is the SUGGESTER'S job. Though we may be compelled to assist the suggester as is the right of any good Samaritan, it has probably been taken for granted and acted upon as though codified law.
It is also not our job to search and analyze every disparate post on a thread for updates to the suggestion. They should be in the suggestion body through edit. Is it nice for a critic to look for recent updates to the suggestion in later posts? Sure! That'd be awesome; but that is a preference and a whim; not a requirement. A critic shouldn't have to slog through 35+ pages of a thread to feel justified in posting. The suggestion in OP is satisfactory.
As a critic, your job is to criticize, objectively and impartially on grounds such as gameplay balance, feasibility, theme, comprehension, necessity, and usefulness. Nowhere in there does it state that you must go and be the damn suggester.
Do not let anyone tell you differently. Now, is it nice and suggested that you help? Of course, but it is not required. If you do help, you should also demand credit for the parts of the idea that were either taken or directly inspired.
A proper way to criticize and help improve a suggestion is to fire open-ended questions that you feel are missing from the suggestion. How much life does a mob have? What's the crafting recipe for this item? How long is the mob set on fire? Will this affect X mob in any way? How about Y mob? etc.
This allows the suggester full creative freedom to edit his suggestion as he sees fit without having to quote or credit you. There are, of course, a multitude of other methods to improve; but that is my preferred.
CRITIC CRITICS CRITICIZE CRITICS
Critic does not mean infallable. Sometimes you're wrong. Sometimes another critic is wrong. That's fine. That's cool. Everyone is wrong from time to time. It's inevitable for all intensive purposes. +1 if you catch that, apply +1 to nearest pedant-o-meter..
The key here is that if a critic is in the wrong; you need to remain respectful, helpful, and calm. (if you cannot remain respectful, helpful, or calm then do not engage(DNE).) inform them that they are mistaken and why (yep, supporting details, peeps).
Keep the correction on-topic. The discussion needs to remain about the suggestion and improvements/criticisms of it. Failure to do so can lead to a discussion purge (or worse) a thread lock. If the correction forces the discussion off-topic or has potential to create a red-herring; please forward the correction to private messages or DNE. If the opposing critic is violating rules, report them (DON'T TELL THEM YOU'RE REPORTING THEM!) and DNE.
THIS WOULD BE USELESS!
I'm going to start off this one rather bluntly. WRONG! You are WRONG. Period.
Good, we got the message? Now let me explain the points.
As people have gotten acquainted with this little thread, I've seen plenty of people try to circumvent what's written here as though it's cannon (to those that follow this thread, I am deeply honored and humbled simultaneously, I thank you all for following as you have) and because of that, they will go into every unspecified reason to deny a suggestion they can. It's a quaint testament to human ingenuity and security defeating. I love it, but I digress. There are TWO times I've seen this pop up, both of which are unverifiable and likely invalid criticisms.
1) It would be a waste of time to code!
This one is a lovely little ditty that tries to comply with the IT CAN'T BE CODED parable while completely ignoring exactly WHY it's posted in the first place. The good news is you're no longer saying "it can't be coded". Which is 100% unverifiable. The bad news is you're NOW saying "it can't be coded quickly enough" or "it wouldn't be worth the time it takes to code".
Either way, C_FLAT (it's actual go-to label) already lists why it COULD be coded quickly enough or how it WOULD be worth the time to code. Here's the thing. If you do not understand programming languages/logic/structure then EVERYTHING is too hard to code, including the programming for this forum, the Windows/Linux/Mac OS you're using, and the games you enjoy playing. Why bother making pong? It can't be coded.
The problem is, there exists things known as barrier of entry. The more you do something, the easier things become. What may be impossible or taxing to you may be a simple addition to someone else. Essentially, this is a problem that shouldn't have to be addressed because it fails for the same reasons as the surrogate it replaces.
2) It would be more work than it's worth!
An appeal to efficiency, eh? Again, you'd look rather silly if it took Mojang about 15 minutes to comment in/test/comment out. You can't really say this because it is not known to you how hard the task at hand would actually be. Because of this, it's probably far easier than you give it credit for.
Unless you have credible time programming and understand how difficult a suggestion really is, stop. If you don't have programming; at least back up your criticism with facts or logical appeals or... y'know... numbers.
DON'T BE RUDE, THIS IS A SUGGESTION
I dunno. I'm probably the only one that gets annoyed when I see someone post this trite and random sentence. If you find yourself about to sprout off a golden winner like "This is a suggestion, be nice." Then I urge you to reconsider.
There's several reasons why.
Possibly most importantly is, it gets on my last nerve... Alright, so that's not actually important at all.
Here's the ACTUAL reasons why.
1) Yeah, thanks jack. I would have never realized with my methodical button-presses from Minecraft general to Minecraft suggestions that people would actually post SUGGESTIONS in the forum.Shock and horror! Yes, this is a suggestion forum, we know that. Your uncanny ability to point out the obvious may help local law enforcement, but it does nothing here.
As a matter of fact, I personally have over 5000 posts, I know for a fact that under 100 have originated OUTSIDE of the suggestions forum. When I read this statement, it's an insult to my intelligence and an insult to others.
2) You have added absolutely NO substance to the article. Not only is what you have said redundant, but it also does NOT help the suggestion. You have actually gone as far OFF-topic as is physically possible while at the very same instant defend the article you've added nothing to.
Not only is this self-defeating, but it actually HURTS the suggestion more than it helps because you've just created a tangent to pull focus away from the topic-on-hand, and onto how much of an idiot you are. Please do NOT use this sentence.
3) The objective of the other posters is to CRITICIZE and improve the suggestion. This means that we might end up having to say something that the suggester may not like reading in the effort to improve the suggestion.
By asking people to be nice, you are KILLING the suggestion as you have removed some of the only viable feedback the suggestion would otherwise receive. If you are reading this right... Heck, if you've read this far, you know what this means.
By defending the suggestion in this way, you have just become the single-most greatest enemy to this topic.

"Do I seriously need to read this?"
I can't say every poster here needs this, but I would probably just say "yes" anyway. You might pick up some helpful pointers you haven't thought of before.
"Good god, why is this guide so long?"
A more valid question would be "This guide is as long as it needs to be. How did you accurately pull that off?"
This guide attempts to cover every possible thing, and if it doesn't, people make suggestions in this thread to cover more things so this guide is even better at covering everything.
You'll see that after these long images, there's still tons of sections to read. I put the titles there so you have a general idea of what mistakes and presentations you shouldn't make, and the description of those sections are put in spoilers just in case you don't understand a section.
"You know what? I don't need this guide. I'll be fine. I'm cool!"
But you entered this thread anyway. Okay then, no one can take over your free will and mentally force you to read this guide. Remember, that once you make that dumb thread about "new ores" and everyone is not supporting and digging into you. You'll understand why this thread is here.
"Omggg why is this guide so mean? =("
This guide is here to lay down the facts, not to make you feel good. A lot of the guide uses heavy exaggeration and omnidirectional attacks for the purpose of being satirical and humorous (which a lot of people love this guide for) but at the same time, drives the point home and how you shouldn't do the dumb stuff on this forum that people just keep doing.
Unless you are referred to specifically by name, you being offended by the guide is something on your end. And if a stickied thread is capable of offending you, then perhaps you need better training on dealing with the internet as a whole.
I will not feel a flicker of guilt for what I put in this guide, and I'll never redo the guide so it's "nicer to people". So reminding me of any nastiness you read here won't change anything. This guide would be much less popular if it weren't written the way it was.
The Suggestion Guide
In image form.
Optional Balance Guide
Made by 0_Zippy.
How to Properly Search
A lot of people have made redundant threads but actually did search beforehand. That mistake is most likely filtering the search wrong. Observe the image below:
The things highlighted in green are the basic needs. I think the bottom one is the most essential, because people have searched for topic names but didn't filter that to only the Suggestions forum, thus people end up getting results from every forum at once that share similar words in thread titles.
That aforementioned case causes threads from the Suggestion forum to be spread out too far, making people think that a specific suggestion thread isn't redundant. It's a pretty easy mistake to make.
If You Want Your Thread Locked, Moved or Deleted
For those who just want to put a thread out of its misery, or just moved.
If you want any of these three things to happen to your thread. All you have to do report your own post by... clicking "Report" at the bottom of your post, then choose this on the following screen (click to make bigger):
Note that you can also help out a new or inexperienced user get their thread moved to the right location before the original poster realizes the mistake, which can reduce confusion and complications in a thread a lot sooner. However, DO NOT tell the user that "they've been reported" as 1.) that's against the rules and 2.) they may take it the wrong way which can lead to revenge scheming.
And no, do simply edit your posts with "MOD, PLZ DELETE THREAD" while doing nothing else. You will embarrass yourself to death and accomplish nothing.
In the case of getting a thread locked or deleted... Understand that if you make a horrible thread, and then stop people from posting negative posts by asking a mod to lock your thread, you aren't exactly "out of the woods" nor are you hitting the reset button. The same goes for having a thread deleted, because a lot of us will still notice that (thread suddenly vanishing, some of our posts vanishing, etc...)
Do not think that getting your bad thread locked or deleted removes all the negativity from you. Only use these options if there's absolutely no hope in saving your thread, and posting in it will just horrify things more. Do not delete/lock your thread just because you goofed and can't handle a couple negative posts.

What does and doesn't "fit" in Minecraft?
"We already have jukeboxes and Creepers, so fighter jets would be fine!"Something fitting or not fitting in Minecraft is one of the most prominent arguments on the Suggestions forum, and in some way, the most controversial. It's a double-edged sword, because both sides can have very strong points. For these reasons, that concept gets its very own section.
It's no secret that Minecraft is not made of realism, and even though there are medieval-like things in the game, such as potions, swords, bows, arrows and armor. However, we have not-so-medieval things, like jukeboxes. So... how do we know for sure if something fits or not? What is our reference point? Which side is correct?
If a game has a distinct theme to it, then it's very easy to know what fits in it and what doesn't. If a game is based around a city where gangs gunfight non-stop, it would be wise for the developers in that game to not add magic spells, because something like that would be extremely goofy, ruin the theme of the game and even distance players away. What if Portal 2 had NFL Announcers that have fork guns? That would be pretty awkward, right?
So what if a game doesn't have any theme to it, does that make it immune to "unfitting" things? The answer: Not really, at least not always. Even without realism or any concrete theme, suggestions for Minecraft can still be very stupid. It can be argued that Minecraft has created its own theme. If someone said to you "Think of a Minecraft theme!" You'd be thinking about punching trees, Creepers, blocks and diamond ore. The game has been out for so long and has been so popular that it has that kind of foundation.
We need to read between the lines and understand what a game is about. Then and only then will we understand what ideas would actually fit in. People often cling to what's already in the game to defend their bad suggestions. For example, going "Well the game has random green things with no arms so I don't see the problem with ." And those arguments usually fail.
Yes, there are some weird things in Minecraft, but strange things like Ghasts and Creepers are still given proper cause-and-effect development. Sure, the Creepers explode on players for reasons unknown, but it doesn't start dancing while summoning frogs with its face. Even in games with no theme, you can still suggest things for it that are so senseless and over the top that they'd subtract any sensible experience for the player.
If you were playing Minecraft, and saw a red caromo emerge from the ocean and started talking to you in Mel Gibson's voice while spawning chickens, how would you feel?
A.) Possibly depressed and perturbed that something so senselessly "out there" touched the game.
B.) Eh, doesn't matter! Nothing doesn't fit or unfit in this game! I'm cool with that car thing.

Threads You Are Not Allowed to Make
Unless you have a "getting my own threads locked" fetish.Wishlists
Your suggestion is only allowed one core idea. Any more than that and your thread will be locked and forgotten for eternity.
If you have multiple ideas, but they all fit within the same core idea, that's fine. Take a look at the following examples. Green is good. Red is bad. Mind you, that your suggestion will need a lot more detail than what the example provides. The examples are just a general idea thing.
"I suggest we have new things for deserts. Such as scorpions, different shaped temples, snakes, different color cacti and maybe light sandstorms."
"So uhhhhhhh guys we need ice cream and wizards and magic wands and sandwiches and um um emerald tools and armor lol and oooooooohh we need space travel!!!"
Redundant Suggestions
There was a very good reason I added a searching guide a lot earlier in this thread. I didn't put it there for extra internet attention. If we've seen 300 threads about "durr thirst bars yo", chances are, that 301st time won't be the dealbreaker.
Search before posting. Seriously.
Joke Threads
Any seasoned member here seen many joke threads that never got locked because it flew right over the mods' heads or because the thread is detailed enough be considered "not a joke".
Though if a mod is absolutely sure a thread is a dumb joke, it will get locked or just deleted. On top of that, the person who made the dumb thread will get a warning rating increase.
Rant Threads
Use your itty bitty brain and understand what choices are and aren't hurr durrish.
This place is for suggestions, not your personal blog to vent out your dislikes in the game. All it does is possibly make only yourself feel better while serving no purpose to the rest of us.
Yes, we know some of you hate the hunger nar. Making a complaint thread without any suggestion only accomplishing a locked thread, warning levels and a 1-starred profile,
Non-Suggestions
If it takes a guide to teach you to not post a non-suggestion in the S-U-G-G-E-S-T-I-O-N-S forum, you might have a thinking deficiency and therefore need to cure that somehow.
Suggestions Not For Vanilla Minecraft
This isn't the place for mod suggestions. There's already a mod forum for those kinds of thread. Suggestions for the core game are the only type allowed.
Don't walk in here and poop threads where you ask "suggestions 2 make my server bettar?!?!?" or "ideas for a c00l house??!??!??!??!"
/truth
"Post your suggestions here!" (a.k.a. Megathreads)
Wow, really? Were you not aware that there was a forum for this? You had to make a thread within that same forum for people to post suggestions? If you did this or are planning it, you need to feel overwhelmingly goofy about it. Don't make those kind of threads by the way.
Suggesting What's Already Implemented
I don't need to explain why this one is pointless.
Suggestions With No Content
Because saying "i want another cat" in all lower case letters is such a good thread. If the suggestion is so small or nonexistent that there's no discussion value, then thread doesn't need to exist.
Excuses You Shouldn't Use (List is continued here!)
And you should feel bad if you use them."It can be optional!"
Possibly the most overused excuse that most people make when they try to defend a bad suggestion of theirs. Options are left to major things, such as structures, cheats, the type of gamemode, things like that. Don't tack on the optional crap if people think your idea is bad.
If your suggestion is good and balanced enough, it doesn't have to be optional, get it? "Wait, my new cave mob that can insta-kill players isn't liked? Well, it can be turned off!" No. Stupid move. Mojang won't add an option for one mob. It doesn't work that way. Though they did kinda do that with the "bonus chest", but whatever.
"It's rare!"
Yet another overused excuse that people use to "save" their suggestions. The thing is, it doesn't repair your suggestion. If anything, you're possibly taking the lazy way out so you don't have to rework the rest of your suggestion.
"Guys, I suggest we add super diamonds to the game! Herp! They're double the strength of normal diamonds but they are super rare!!1!" No. The idea still remains horrible and unbalanced. Diamonds (with enchantments) are strong enough, and a stupid second diamond type doesn't need to be there. Regardles of how rare these "super diamonds" may be, the idea is still dumb and would be waste of energy to implement.
A lot of new kids here make their suggestions so rare that it might as well not be in the game anyway. 0.0000000000000000000001% chance of a new mob spawning is not exactly a 10/10 idea.
"I'm sure Mojang could/would do it!"
This is where blind optimism... blinds people. Too much. Have you read an update or played a snapshot? No? Then you probably don't know a damn thing about what they would or could do. This doesn't count people who do a lot of programming work for Minecraft and happen to know the game ticks, but still, "can" doesn't always mean "will".
Suggesting that "super realistic water that updates every nanosecond and waves/reacts to anything touching it and it reflects light perfectly and oh yeah IT DOESN'T LAG AT ALL LOL" is just stupid. Saying "well I'm sure Mojang could make it not lag" doesn't prove a damn thing. Yeah, you think Mojang could pull it off, but does that actually mean it's 100% true? No. Try not to get your head too far up those clouds. Optimism can be a good thing, but can go too far.
I'm sure we all have that idea we think should be added in the game, something that might be doable but would take years to finalize. But I don't think Mojang is gonna use up a year of their time to add one suggestion from one just user just because that one user would "really really love it".
"Well it's expensive!"
Kinda the same thing as the "it can rare" excuse. When people start bashing your suggestion about "a wand that can control any mob to your will" isn't gonna be magically saved by mentioning that it "uses 4 blocks of diamond to make it!"
No. It doesn't and will never work that way. Hostile mobs are what add actual challenge to the game, so having something that can control any mob won't be the best addition (and would ruin it for the utility mobs we already have), and trying to buff up the crafting reciple of it will not turn the suggestion from christ-awful all the way up to best-idea-ever status. Don't make this mistake.
"It can be ignored!"
Thank you, Bigcheecho
This excuse gets pretty stupid when people suggest things that actually can't be ignored. When you make that thread about being given the option to throw TNT where it explodes on impact, don't say "well if you don't like it just don't use it." That's retarded. Sure, you may not want to use it, but that's not gonna stop other people on SMP servers from chucking loads of TNT at your house. So... did you ignoring the feature fix anything? No. It didn't.
Also, if the idea is crappy and it's something no one would care about, being able to ignore it doesn't salvage the idea. Because if that was the case, Mojang would've made the effort to add something to the game no one would use. Therefore, effort wasted.
"It's meant to be a challenge!"
Don't use this statement if you don't know what a challenge is. And if you don't know, don't act like you know and try to craft your own forced definition of it. Please, know the difference between a challenge and a pointless waste-of-space annoyance.
Your suggestion of Creepers having the ability to go through walls is not a challenge, it's just a dumb annoyance that punches gameplay right in the butt. The challenge is for us to avoid Creepers to begin with and to build things to protect ourselves. So having Creepers materialize right through our houses is just a derpish badly-thought idea that nobody would like.
"Well it's my opinion!"
Whether you want to fathom this or not, your own opinion is the weakest piece of support on your own suggestion, because if you posted your suggestion to begin with, we already know you actually want it.
No one can blame you having opinions, but they won't take you the lengths you want in terms of having others like your suggestion. You thinking that you're idea "would be a really cool thing to add" won't magically make others support your ideas. If you really want to finger people's brains and have them support your ideas, you gotta lay down some cold hard facts on why anyone else should be on board with your idea.
"I'm new here!"
Thank you, FrozenS2M
You telling us that won't change anything, because at the end of the day, you still made a thread that thousands of people are sick of seeing. You can still redeem yourself if you get a mod to lock your topic, or edit your post so it doesn't break any rules or so the suggestion is original
If you are a new guy, and you break a rule or make a mistake, it's alright to tell us that you're new, but only if you make sure to immediately correct your mistake or at least find out how to. Don't make the mistake, have people tell you goofed, then just go "uhh sorry i'm new here so uhh yeah" and then just run away without changing anything. Or else you're gonna get that nice 1-star gang up on your profiles.
And a warning level too.
Backpedaling
What's interesting about the internet, is that sometimes you don't have to see a person face-to-face to know how they're badly lying. If you get negative feedback on a bad suggestion, don't try to spin the context around so you don't "look bad".
"Oh guys I was trolling you all alongLOL!" - No you weren't. If you were a good troll, you wouldn't openly admit to that. We won't fall for that. Your escape attempt failed.
"It was a joke!" - Was it actually a joke, or were you just trying to overcome the negative posts you got? No, it wasn't a joke. Nice try. Mods will also lock your threads and give warnings if you try to use that desperate method of backing away.
"Ugh you guys are trolls/haters." - Stop. Now you're just saying things to make yourself feel better. Don't write off all negative responses as trolling. Just fix your suggestion or move on. Things like this make users get so embarrassed that they have to create alternate accounts.
"Someone in my house posted that, not me." - It's funny that only bad posters use this excuse. It's also funny that the person posting that happened to type in the exact same manner of the person making the "I didn't post that" claim.
"Uhh wait, THIS is what I was actually suggesting!" - Also known as "changing the story" or "hitting the reset button". You suggested Creeper Scorpions which everyone absolutely hated, then you tried to defend it and all of your defenses were bashed away, and now you're going "no you guys have gotten it wrong this whole time, I was suggesting normal scorpions, I only mentioned the creeper thing as a joke lolol."
"This suggestion was just an experiment." - "Yeah, it's a good thing my hated idea was just a prototype, don't worry, the REAL suggestion is coming soon!" No, what you already posted was the real suggestion. I promise you that if your suggestion was actually liked, you'd go along with it and not mention the "experiment" crap.
For those of you who actually will or have post/posted experiment suggestions that you know will fail. Don't. Because why post something if you know the outcome? If your suggestion is bad, you'll look way better by owning up to it and not using some on-the-fly excuse you had crammed in your pocket.
That's a hard excuse to believe after you opened with "creepers need more variants" and every single type "scorpion" appears in your thread, it has "creeper" right before it. Woooow, good joke man.
---
Don't believe me? Look up the users blueberry12 and Fnoop. They got themselves into arguments so deep that they humiliated themselves on the greek gods level.
"A lot of people suggested this so Mojang should give it to us!"
Thank you, Rex1900Roblox
Yes, perfectly flawless logic right there. So when a thousand new members storm in here and blindly suggest that we should "have nukes in the game!!!", Mojang should just bite the bullet and give it to us. Yup, that's how all game developers should work. Because derp.
Remind me to make a hundred alternate accounts asking for "bonus diamond blocks" at the start of the world. Alright, but seriously... No. Don't say crap like that. Correct your anxious mind to not say or think this. This argument is and will forever be invalid. Don't use it here.
"We need this!"
"Ummm liek I suggest we add bacon in da game cuz we NEED BCAON!" No. Just stop. No, don't fight it. Just stop. This is basically you falling in love with your own idea and you just reprogrammed yourself into thinking "omg we need it now!!!!!!" No, we don't. The game will not collapse and die without it.
So before you mash your keyboard and make a new thread and beg for those camoflaged creepers to be in the game, try to remember what the game actually does need, and not confuse your own lusty wants for that "need".
"It's Minecraft! It doesn't have to make sense!"
Thank you, Rex1900Roblox
If Mojang did everything by that "logic", we would be summoning diamonds with our minds and teleporting around by throwing trees. Yes, Minecraft isn't exactly a realism simulator, but you still gotta know your limits. Not all ideas have to be realistic, but they have to at least make some sense and have some form of balance.
Oh, by the way, don't use that excuse as a last ditch effort to save your horrible suicide-inducing suggestion. Where as good posters would try to repair their suggestions, bad posters usually use the "well it's minecraft and it dusn't gotta be real so yah!" escape. No. Don't be the dumb durr bad posters.
Let's make up a scenario. Someone posts a suggestion about Creepers releasing fireworks when they explode, and the fireworks go in random directions and cause much more damage than the initial Creepers explosion. People hate the idea, but the OP backs that up with "well omg dis is mincraft and it don't gotta b real!!" Will the people who hate the idea suddenly change their opinions? I didn't think so either.
"If you don't like the idea then don't comment!"
"If I make a demand in an internet thread, then I'll get what I wan- ANGER!"
God. Knock this crap off. No, if we don't like the idea and find it flawed or broken or retarded, someone will say something negative. Whether you want that to happen or not. If negative posts weren't allowed here, stupid idea threads would be sitting around with 0 posts in them.
Yeah but no. Don't tell people how to respond in your thread, or else you'll probably provoke people to do that even more. So just... don't do it?
"I'll explain my idea more once I get enough supports!"
No. Explain all of your suggestion up front to reduce chance of confusion or misunderstanding in the first place. Don't get lazy and take the road where you go "uhh ok so whatever I'll just explain dis stuff when enuf ppl come to da thread herpty herp..."
When people come to your thread and see you take that route, chances are, they won't come back to that thread over and over again to check if more info was there, so put all of the info there from the start. Simple concept right?
"Game X has this, so Minecraft should have this!"
I actually seen a thread where someone suggested that hot water magically heal you because a Legend of Zelda game had sauna's that could heal you. Uhhh okay.
We get it. Some of you like Skyrim. Some of you like Call of Duty. Some of you like Mario games. That's fine, but don't shut your brain off and start copy and pasting crap from those games. Shooting fire from your hands doesn't work in every game. Using your UAV killstreak doesn't work in every game.
Basically, you liking something in a game doesn't mean Minecraft should have it. Try to think outside yourself and not base the community around your thoughts. At the very best, if you're gonna copy and paste an idea from another game, at least reshape it so it's more balanced.
"This would be awesome for a gamemode!"
Thank you, Zippy
That excuse could be used for just about any theoretical thing. Here let me show you. "I suggest we have rifles and birds in the game, so we could have a gamemode where we shoot birds!" or... "Wattup guys! I suggest we have horseshoes so um liek der could be a gamemode wher we throw horshooz!! I'm cool!"
No though. Things like that are left to mods and plugins. Just about anything in the world could make a possible gamemode, but that doesn't mean the idea is suddenly good.
"What be up guys! This is supa_cool_k1d with a flawless suggestion! Yup! Every once in a while there's a nuke creeper and uhhhhmmmmmmmm like you have to disarm him or else he splodes and your entire world is gone lmao this wud make a fun gamemode where pplz gotta disarm him! Auuuuugggghhhh support!!!!!!!!"
Does that nuke creeper possibly add a new gamemode? Probably. Is it a good idea? lolno.
"This adds variety!"
Uhm... so what? Just about any idea that adds something that wasn't there before adds variety. "I suggest 4 different color spiders!", "I suggest 2 new types of diamonds!", "More ores!", "More mobs!", "Sandwiches!", "Water sports!"
"More" and "better" are not interchangeable words. The two words do not share the same definition. If you want to suggest more of something, make sure it's fitting, appealing and if need be - original. Variety alone doesn't make an idea good out of nowhere.
"Mojang mentioned this once!"
Okay? So a member of Mojang or even Notch or Jeb mentioning an idea suddenly makes it good? Answer: it does not. A good idea is what makes a good idea, not who mentions it. They brought up using carry-around lanterns, yet that idea would blow because dynamic lighting would be a performance hog and cheap permanent torches do a better job anyway.
Please, please do not go "well mojang thought about this so thIS IS CONFIRMED TO BE ADDED!" It's sickening to see situations like this...
Random guy, "I suggest a dream dimension, how it works is-"
Community, "NOOOPE! SUUX! DOESN'T FIT GAME! NO SUPPPOERT!"
Mojang, "We thought about a dream dimension."
Community, "Ooooooh cool here's some ideas how it could be implemented!"
The suck up game. Please don't play it.
"You don't support the idea because you don't get it!"
Thank you, ZTick
No, I don't support the idea because it's horribly unbalanced, poorly thought out and is just downright stupid. Granted though, that statement does make sense if someone responds to the idea and mentions something that wasn't part of the idea or completely skips over a part of the suggestion and assumes it was never there.
Though the phrase is often used when the OP is being a big baby and sucks up to only the people who support. Here's an example of such stupidity:
The OP, "Wassup y'all. I suggest we have skeleton who hold shotguns. This idea is perfect because I love shotguns, so therefore we need it!
smartposter200, "I support. Just joking. I don't. That's the worst idea ever. Maybe we can give creepers swat vests too!"
Man-With-Brain, "Doesn't fit the game and is dumb."
Derpyjoe, "Excellent idea! Would be awesome!"
The OP, "thx for the support derpyjoe, finally someone in my thread who has a brain!"
Please, without hesitation, just stop. It'd be nice if mistakes like that were a bannable offense, but it isn't. Still, don't make that excuse.
"Well then suggest what would make my idea better then!"
Thank you, ZTick.
Commonly uttered when the suggesters get all ragey when people don't support them. It is not the critics job to fix your idea for you. And also understand that the core idea might be so unfitting and horrible for the game that there is no way in hell it can be repaired. So no, we can't help you better your idea of Creepers driving trucks.
Critics throwing in their own ideas is a bonus, not a requirement. Said critics will also only contribute to your idea if they already support the core idea, and/or they see something that could be repaired to boost your idea greatly.
"This needs more uses!"
Thank you, ZTick.
"Auuugh... It's so stupid how flower pots only have uses for putting flowers in. Mojang, you need to feel bad for making it that way. Get on my level of intelligence and see the light by giving these pots more uses. Behold my greatness!!"
There's no crime in suggesting more uses for something, but don't do it in a way where you treat yourself like a knowledge prodigy and "know" exactly how many uses something needs. Also understand that some items have a low amount of uses on purpose. Yes, that scenario can exist. Shocking huh?
"I constantly have to deal with [situation] so we need this in the game!"
Thank you, ZTick
"That's right! I have chests full of sand, and I don't know what to do with it. I don't need that much sand for glass, so we need to give sand another use to even this out! The fate of Minecraft depends on it. (Perilous moan). Ok so ya anyway I suggest we have craftable mini sand castles that can be made with much smaller blocks, this will require Mojang to probably to entire grid recodes from scratch! Thanks for the future support everyone! Bow to my greatness! Be envious of me!"
Dude, if you want to suggest another use for something, that's fine, but don't base it off a dumb situational thing you deal with. It's not like Dinnerbone will scan the forums and go "this poor chap has a surplus of sand, I must meet this user's demands!" Nono. Suggest an idea because it would universally be a good thing for players, not because "I deal with this thing all the time augh!"
"Mojang might change their minds!"
I hate this. I absitively, posilutely, HATE this. Augh.
This meaningless statement can be used for potentially ANY rejected suggestion ever. And guess what it proves? LOLabsolutely nothing. People cling to the thought of "well u can't predict the future so u don't know if mojang will chanj their minds!!!!!" while completely forgetting about the other side. Which is that Mojang may NOT change their minds in the future.
A lot of the time, people using this statement know better. Look guys, if you know Mojang will not suddenly hand out capes for free to anyone or know they won't add flying villagers that fart out diamonds at random, then typing as if "there's hope" for these ideas will have no effect. If people come in and bash your idea with reasoning so good that your suggestion needs an early burial, then just give it the burial and drop it there, don't play the "it's ok we might still get dis!" card.
"I asked my friends about the idea and they liked it."
And I'm sure that if I asked a nazi about the holocaust, they'd like that too. Guess what though, the concept is still bad. You and the people you discuss the suggestion with are not the chosen focus group for Minecraft. Telling us some kid in your homeroom liked the idea of chocolate covered potatoes doesn't make the rest of us like the idea. Someone agreeing with you does not make your idea good.
Another thing I've seen here is people using that cheap excuse as an escape clause. Meaning that when a thread is peppered with "no support", the OP suddenly jumps to the other end of the field and goes, "Oh wait guys guys this is totally not my fault, my friends are the ones who said it was good so it's really on them." Sweet mother of nope. It didn't stop the fact that you posted a thread and awaited responses.
Now, there's nothing wrong with discussing your idea with others and fine tuning it with that info, but your little sister or those last kids at your sleepover should not be the end-all be-all validation of your suggestions. At least spread it out to other kinds of people.
Red Herring Statements
If you don't know what a Red Herring is, let me explain it. If you already know what it means, skip the red text.
A "red herring" - something used in books and movies - is something that's so easy to see, attention grabbing or just plain obvious that it's meant to distract you from seeing something else that's more important or what "the truth" is. For example, when a movie is about finding "that one murderer", and all of a sudden the movie introduces some guy that just broke out of jail to make you think "omg omg he's the murdered bcuz he wuz in jail!" when the answer is too obvious and cheap to be the true answer. Get it?
So what do I mean when I say a "red herring statement"? Well, the definition is pretty much the same. These are statements (often used by bad or just lazy posters) to avoid an argument because they A.) can't think of a way to defend themselves and/or B.) just wanna take the easy way out and type less. Either way, you look like an absolutely idiot when using said statements.
I'm gonna give an example:
Herp Poster: I suggest we have golden sandwiches in thuh game. They are crafted with bread on the top, a gold ingot in the middle and bread on the bottom, they give you 2 minutes of invinsibilitie(sp?) when eate-SUPPoRT?!?!?!
Reply #1: Just... no? Why are we eating gold bars? Why are we making sandwiches out of them? Why is gold and bread making us invincible? I would really love an answer to all those questions.
Herp Poster: Well at least it's not diamond sandwiches. LOL.
The Herp Poster is really living up to the name I stamped on him. Did making that unfunny diamond sandwich comment prove anything? Nope. Did it answer any questions? Nope. Did it make that poster look really dumb. lolyeah.
"But it's hard to get!"
Something being hard to get is a balance AID, rather than something than something that acts as a end-all be-all thing that "makes something perfectly" balanced. Your idea of headshot snipers is still stupid and has no place in Minecraft. It doesn't matter if it's hard to get, it's still stupid. Understand that please.
"By the time you reach [situation], you'll already have [resource]!"
For the love of anything religious. STOP using this excuse for overly expensive item ideas. No, you don't know how much resources every player has left over when they reach something. Don't assume. Do not use this blanket statement. It does not fix the balance of your suggestion or suddenly make your item idea not useless/wasteful... Push this excuse out of your brain without delay.
"Why not?"
There's nothing wrong with saying this, but don't use only these two words as the rickety, wooden duct taped supports for your suggestion. The line of thought involving "well it doesn't hurt anything so why not add it?" is not a very good one. If Mojang worked by those standards, we would have a thousand more "meh" things in Minecraft that "didn't hurt anything" but probably didn't add too much either - we'd be overcrowded with stuff like that.
"Why?" is more important than "Why not?", because if you really want your suggestion to touch the game, you'd want to convince the makers of the game to make the programming effort to add your idea that challenges the "why should we add this?" shield. Telling them "why not?" wouldn't make them respond with "Can't argue with that logic!"
"You're not Mojang, so you can't make that call!"
Yeah, we get it. Not everyone on this forum is a game developer, and chances are... most of us aren't part of Mojang either (hard to believe, I know, I was shocked when I found that out too.) *whisper* Ooohhh but here's a secret! *end of whisper* We don't need to be part of Mojang to know what sucks fart in an idea!
The average person that knows about Minecraft can still tell if an idea is unbalanced. For example, if you suggest a "Potion of Hulk" that adds 6 hearts of damage to any attack we make and halves any damage we take and costs only a feather to put in an awkward potion... Do we need to be part of Mojang to know how inarguably overpowered that is including the fact that's a completely upgrade of the Strength potion? No, no we don't. Us lowly non-Mojang commoners can still read between the lines.
Let's bring up one more point. If we critics can't make a call because we're not part of Mojang, why do YOU get to judge how balanced your idea is? *awkward silence* I didn't think you had an answer for that. Glad we cleared that up.
"This needs to be harder/easier!"
About ideas where something is made more difficult: Suggestions based around this or usually pretty one-dimensional, because they revolve around "I I I me me me me me myself me me and me!" Look dude, just because you're the master of killing Ghasts or Zombies or whatever, doesn't mean the rest of the world has this mastery. Some players are new, some players are bad, some players take longer to get the hang of stuff.
So adding a more difficult mechanic to a game for everyone in the world is not the brightest thought in one's head. Be as factual and accurate as possible if you want to get us on board and support your idea, because "I think this should be harder cuz dis is what I want!" is a fail within a slightly larger fail.
About ideas where something is made easier: Ideas likes this are less common, but like the ones about more difficult things, the suggester can sometimes get a little selfish. And sometimes, the suggester mentions an idea like this out of laziness just so [insert task here] doesn't take as long.
Again, if you want us to agree with you, explain factually why something should me made easier instead of "i want this lol". This brings me to the next entry...
"Fine, this will just be for Hard and Hardcore then!"
Nooooooo! No no no! Don't. If I don't want flash floods and random laggy tornadoes ruining Easy and Normal mode, why the hell would having that ruin just Hard instead be better? If an idea is too deadly, detrimental or costly for players and adds no fun or rewarding challenge in ANY difficulty, slapping it "in just hard mode" will not save the horrid suggestion.
Let's live in a world where all the difficulties are just fine, instead of having one of them ruined forever.
"Put back what was in beta/alpha!"
If something was deliberately removed from the game, it was done so for a reason. Mojang wouldn't remove a feature "just to troll us." Even if that removed thing was perfectly balanced or fun to you, doesn't mean there was some more important, underlying reason for a feature's removal.
I noticed there are some hot-headed nostalgia goons out there, and a lot of them make threads where they spout "auuuugh beta/alpha was soooo much better, minecraft is ruined and ragey ragey rage!!!" Oh my god, if you're one of those people, shut. The hell. Up.
If that older version was so good, then go and play it. You can play any version at any time. So there is absolutely NO reason to rant about it here.
"It's been 30 days since this suggestion was posted, so it's not redundant and I didn't need to search."
In case you don't understand the rules of this forum. A redundant suggestion can be posted and not locked if the previous thread on the same idea is 30 or more days old.
Okay, so your thread has no penalty. Oh but guess what? You should still search. Why? So you can understand why the older threads got the hate from other posters. If an unbalanced thread on thirst bars was made 30 days ago and was hated, guess what's gonna happen to your thread when you post the same thing? I'll let you put that one together.
Moral of the story: Always search.
"This adds a challenge!" (Part 2)
I'm very embarrassed that I'm putting a "part 2" of an entry, but the user Acknid brought up a very good example. Also, adding a new entry increases the chance of it being read compared to updating an older entry. The example was about when people suggest new weapons, enchantments, etc. that complicate gameplay rather than improve it.
One of the most common suggestions I've seen in this category is "Guys! Hey! We need a bow that fires multiple arrows in a spread fashion so you can hit multiple mobs at onc-SUPPORT?"
Okay cool, but what if a stray arrow hits a passive mob I didn't want to hit? That's when the suggester says "Oh but it's a challenge because you have to be careful!" Nope, nope and an ultra red nope. That's not a challenge, that's complicated micromanaging. What if I want to shoot just one arrow? Then I have to switch between different bows just to carefully hit things at a distance. Oh wait. Firing more arrows is an enchantment? Oh cool, my bow is cursed with "Micromanage III".
You what's easier? Not having the complicated thing in the game to begin with, rather than adding it and trying to put fallacy "dis a challenge" sprinkles on it. If an idea like this, it needs to be dropped or heavily redone.
"We already have [Item A] so my idea would be fine!"
When people use this crappy fallacy of a failgument, you know what I think of? I think of all the nasty, dumb kids I knew in elementary school that probably knew better but made excuses to get out of trouble.
"But Mrs. Unproportional-Body, I saw Tommy throwing forks at old people so I thought it was okay!" Nooo, yeeeaaah, no. You mentioning what's in the game already very rarely works as a good argument, and usually just comes off as a pass-the-buck blame game.
There are usually two instances when people use this crap argument. When something is deemed not-so-fitting for the game and when someone is suggesting a boring add-for-the-sake-of-adding alternative. If I suggest another flying ranged mob in the Nether that's uninteresting as all hell, will mentioning how we already have the Ghast help me? No, because the Ghast alone is enough, and it's not somehow required to add my bad idea.
If I suggest army bases where the soldiers trade with "uncatalogued emeralds", will bringing up "oh but we have jukeboxes!" change anything? I'll let you answer that one.
"Let's see you make better idea then!"
You need bash your head against a hard object until your mind mentally accepts how stupid this statement is.
I just torn down your suggestion with actual facts and stats, so I don't need to make a suggestion of my own to 1-up you. Do I need to be able to sing to know that someone is a terribad singer? No? Then you understand why that excuse is a fail wrapped within another fail.
As this guide has stated maybe 2 or 3 times now, it is not the critics job to make your idea better, and it's not our job to post a better suggestion to "prove ourselves". The only thing we need to prove is how good or christawful your suggestion is.
"This needs another way of acquiring!"
Is it truly needed, or do is it just the fact that you want real bad?
"Guyzzzzz. There's only one way to craft a piston, augh that is so stupid cuz we need another way! Let's use string in place of cobblestone or something!"
It was never set in stone that something in Minecraft needed another way of obtaining something. Note, that if something like that is implemented in the game, it could hurt the integrity of the first method of obtaining something, especially in players find the alternative easier somehow.
A lot of people seem to use the "durrdy herp well maybe the new way of getting suits a different playstyle!!" The playstyle of what, being lazy?
"But you can fix this with an external program!"
I wish there was a rule on this forum where threads get locked if the OP says something as stupid as this. Augh.
Is that the kind of suggestion you want? Where people need to get other programs just to cope with your one idea? This is usually the part where I use some clever lines or over-the-top made up quotes, but I'm all out of juice for this one.
"You guys just need to upgrade your PC!"
"My idea is so good that other PC's must become and take the shape of the glass that is my idea! I'm this self-centered!"
Really, you want perfect shadows and reflecting water so bad that you don't care about any other players? I did this very difficult study once, and my studies show that... it's possible that the game would be better without your l-l-l-lagified idea.
Please, don't fall into the "everyone's computer suckks, get an upgrade so you can handle my horridly thought out idea! All of you, spend $400 on a new GPU just for that one feature I suggested!" God, if you exist, stop inventing these people.
No, just because your hyper accurate physics idea is optional, doesn't mean it's worth the extreme trial-and-error programming to add in the first place.
"You have your opinion, I have mine."
This is what I like to a call a "blanket statement". Saying this is like adding ice to glass of water and waiting for some extraordinary chemical reaction yet to be named by science. It adds nothing to the discussion and... also changes nothing. Why say this? What outcome are you going for?
Congrats, you openly stated that you and another person have differing opinions on your idea. Something that's already established! Woah! You should have a gold "Thinkin' Really Good" medal! If you only have this response to defend yourself, the non-supporters probably defeated you.
"Alright, you gave your criticism, now GET OUT!"
No, that doesn't look temper tantrum-y and childish at all. You are not a mod, and have no say who can and can't post in your thread. You also have no control over how many times someone can return to post in a thread.
Let me make another thing clear. Critics do not have a "1 post per thread only" card. Chances are, they will keep coming back to a thread as long as the OP keeps using invalid defenses.
I'll admit it's annoying when a critic keeps repeating himself, as mentioned in the "For the Critics" thread, but even then, you don't have a magic barrier that can keep critics out.
"[Well-known person] said the idea was good!"
Oh really?! Is that how that works? The more famous you are, the more correct you are? Good to know that once I cure cancer and buy out Microsoft, I'll never be wrong again!
#logicalfallacy #badexcuses #failguments
"I don't care about this suggestion."
Y... Yes. Yes you do. Otherwise the thread you just created would not be, but yet it is.
In all the years I've been on this forum, the only time this excuse was used is when an idea was unpopular and the OP couldn't handle it, and tried the crappy escapism "eh lol watever i posted this cuz i felt like it."
No, that excuse won't work after you defended the idea for a full page and made a lame MS paint banner for it. You never see this excuse on popular suggestion, I guess we'll... never know why.
Trust in Big Brother!
The Minecraft Forum's equivalent of "Trust the higher power, trust the HP!"
Sometimes people use these self-defeating excuses when they're too lazy to finish out a suggestion, or when the critics point the imbalances.
"It doesn't matter how unbalanced my idea is, Mojang will make it balanced when they add it!" Oh god, stop. First off, you're assuming that just because you posted a thread, your suggested is pretty much getting in the game. It isn't. Second, don't use Mojang as an excuse-crutch just so you don't rebalance your bad idea.
This forum requires you to complete and repair your own ideas, don't just wait for "Mojang to do it for you." Sometimes your idea can be so horrible that even Mojang can't fix it. They don't have "cancer suggestion fairy dust" that fixes all. No. No.
"This is [adjective], so we might as well make them more [adjective]!"
One of the most goofy logical fallacies I know about, and when you spend enough time on this forum, you see quite a lot of them.
What part of your mind follows this logic? "Endermen already pick up blocks, so we might as well make them dismantle player's houses too!" Really? And that's somehow... set in stone? Yeah man, Mojang is gonna butcher something for players because they follow an empty meaningless fallacy.
What's next? "Chunk updates can lag people, so we might as well make them laggier!" Yes, keep using this incorrect line of thought, you guys are geniuses.
Presentations You Need to Avoid (List is continued here!)
Because people may hate you a little if you don't avoid them.
Entire Posts in Big Text
Seriously, only use big text if you're trying out some very organized formatting. Do not type your entire suggestion in 24-size font. Yes, we know you want us to read your suggestion badly, but when you type like a 12-year-old kid who is shouting for attention, you will annoy people and your suggestion will most likely be damaged.
No, increasing the font size out of nowhere will not heighten the awareness of your suggestion. Don't make the common new-user mistake, don't get so bubbly and overexcited over your own suggestion that you have to shout "look at dis suggestion you guys look look look look LOOK LOOK LOOK!!! HERRPPP!!" Don't do that crap.
Horrible Punctuation and Spelling
Even though you're on the internet, proper spelling and punctuation still have some importance. Though the case is forgivable if English is not your primary language. For those of you who already know how the English language works, don't make retarded posts like this:
ok hello guys ok so mayb we cud hav vehicals in da game like cars and planes and jets and trucks and trains and yachts so yeah all dat stuff pretty durrrr keep da thred alive so notch can see it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, that's a good way to get people to mock your suggestion as well as your shorthand typing like you're some young kid using AOL for the first time. Posting like that will embarrass you and ruin your suggestion. Mindless run on sentences with no punctuation will backfire on you immensely.
Spamming Emotes/Images
This one almost doesn't deserve to be part of this list, but here it is. This one isn't a big deal as the other listed things, but can still get annoying if spammed carelessly. For example, making a post like this...
You know what kind of weapon Minecraft needs? SPEARS!
:Notch::Notch::Notch::Notch::Notch::Notch::Notch::Zombie::Zombie::Zombie::Zombie::Zombie:
Will it absolutely ruin your suggestion? Possibly. Do posts like that look stupid as hell? Yeah. Spamming emotes will not magically make people like your suggestion more. Wait to come down from that sugar high before making a suggestion.
Flaunting Thread Titles
It shouldn't take a guide to tell you how to make a proper thread title, but people keep making the same stupid mistakes. If your thread is about iron boats, don't name your thread "cool idea". If your thread is about new potions, don't name your thread "something jeb should add". Also, don't make a pretty ASCII frame around your thread title like this:
**~~**~{{{- New Creepers -}}}~**~~***
Dumbdumbdumb. Adding doilies to your thread title will not make your ideas seem better. You're just gonna come off with "guys ignore other threads and jus look at mine look look!1!1!" vibes. It's bad attention. Keep your thread titles normal.
Don't beg or constantly ask for support.
And don't ask for support in the title of your thread, as if that will somehow make people support you before actually reading your suggestion. It doesn't and won't work that way. Don't say "ok like um maybe um if enough ppl support then maybe um mojang will like see the thread and it will be in the game um" No. It doesn't work that way either.
If you make a suggestion about jetpack surfboards in Minecraft that can detect diamonds, 800 people supporting the bad suggestion will still not make it appear in the game. The solution is simple, make your suggestion good, then people will support. Because getting on your knees and begging for it will not accomplish anything.
Don't make the suggestion just for Mojang.
This is a public forum. When you post a suggestion, we all get to comment on it. Otherwise, this forum would be designed so only Mojang could see it and no one else. Don't say crap like "well omg if dis enuf supports den mojang will see it!!!!!" No. Doesn't work that way. Especially if the idea is stupid but people keep supporting anyway.
Make your suggestion work out for everyone, not just Mojang. After all, if your suggestion was placed in the game, it would be the rest of the world who has to deal with it being in the game. Know what I mean?
Age is not an excuse.
No, don't argue that it is, it isn't. No, don't worm around my previous sentence, it isn't. It doesn't matter if you're 11 and "you jus type lik this wher theres no like propor spelling an like punchiation and its liek jus a run on sentince durr without paus". Doesn't matter, you admitting you're young doesn't magically make your bad sentences easier to read.
"Add this mod!"
Thank you, FrozenS2M
Gotta love it when people forget why mods are mods. Anyone at their own liesure can use the mod or not. Yes, we know there are mods you like, but that doesn't you should make a thread and go "add this to the game I'd really appreciate so yeah bye and support". Duuuumb.
This is usually caused by users with that mentality of "everyone else's opinions always match mine so errr yeah!" No. They don't. I'm sure you'd get all giddy if Mojang added the "Mo' Creatures" mod just for you, but the other 10,000,000 people that play this game may not. And those other 10,000,000 people, believe it or not, might have a different opinion than you! Woah! Strange right?!
Don't speak for everyone.
Do NOT title your thread "something everyone wants". That's an excellent way to get people to give people a burning hate for both you and your suggestion. When you pull that "we all want this" crap, you're coming off as an ultra arrogant kid who thinks he can read the minds of an entire game community.
You also come off as someone who loves your own idea so much that you automatically assume, "Yeah! Everyone's gonna support this! Yeah!" No. Correct your brain in a way where you do not make this mistake.
Scale Tipping
Thank you, Zippy
Possibly the most boring and uncreative thing you can do to a suggestion. "Wattup y'all! Dis my idea of spears! They do 10% less damage but swing 10% faster than a sword!! I'll be back for my supports later! I'm cool!"
No. Stop while you're very behind. Baby tweak ideas like that are usually bad and uninteresting. If these spears have pros and cons that perfectly match the sword, then why not just stick with the sword and not add waste-of-time lines of code or another dull weapon?
Be original and don't rely on what's already there by altering stats by salt grain sizes, then go on thinking "There, my idea is good enough because I changed things. I'll expect to see this in Minecraft tomorrow! Hire me Mojang! I'm smart! Self importance!" No. Don't.
"Less X but more Y" ideas are lazy. Force yourself to be more creative than that.
Don't suggest what's been removed from the game.
Unless you have actual proof that something is being reimplemented back in the game, don't plop out a thread about that stuff. The amount of pigmen threads that were created where the OP said "pigmen are confirmed to be added! yeah!" would surprise you.
No. Stop. Don't suggest food restoring health instantly when they went through all that effort for the hunger system and instant healing potions. Know when crap was removed for a reason.
Don't post memes with your suggestion.
Thank you, Zippy
A meme that's funny to you might be overdone and dried out to someone else. So... just don't post them? Yes, this includes stupid sayings or terminology, like calling gold "budder". A single meme in your suggestion could shoot your idea right in the face and dent your reputation on these forums as well.
In fact, they might even go a step further and give you that nice 1 star on your profile. So if you get the urge to call gold boots "budder boots lol" or use a meme generator image in your suggestion, don't. Throw that meme crap out the window forever.
Realize the cost of your suggestion.
Thank you, SamurottXEasily one of - in not the most overdone mistake on a suggestion. Not knowing the true cost of what a suggestion would need. Both short-term and long-term.
So if you want to suggest snow cones that heal 3 hunger, that's one thing, but don't make it so we have to get Silk Touch, then collect 8 ice blocks, then surround a snowball with them on a crafting table just for a little piece of food that restore 3 hunger.
Or don't suggest some special kind of torch that illuminates 5 more blocks of an area than that of a normal torch, but requires two diamonds to craft. No one will want to waste to precious diamonds like that for a single torch. Please, think very hard about the cost and benefit of your suggestions.
"The ______ Update!"
Thank you, SamurottX
Despite how big or small your suggestion would be, please don't title your threads like this... It's gotten a little old, and we've seen a ton of threads with titles like these when the suggestion is something miniscule. These thread titles won't make Mojang create your "update" right then and there.
If you're suggesting two new enchantments. Don't call your thread "The Enchantment Update!" If you're suggesting a tiny tweak for sheep, don't call it "The Shearing Update!" No. Restrain yourself from doing that.
If your suggestion is something that would be a big change, and it's popular and liked enough, then maybe you could slip that title somewhere. Just to be on the safe side though, maybe just not have that kind of title at all.
Don't keep arguing with the better critics.
Thank you, yoshi4098
Yes, we all wish we could make that suggestion that has 100% approval ratings, but things don't work out like that. Note that when someone comes in tells you the flaws of your suggestion with excellent detail and reasoning without any insults, that person is taking the time to help you.
When your idea's flaws are pointed out, that isn't always an attack or a post just to embarrass you. So don't get snooty and mark off the good critics as "trolls". Open your eyes a bit and maybe realize that your suggestion ain't perfect. About 0% of them are.
So work with the good critics and not against them, don't get caught up in this "no my sugestion iz perfect no shut uuuuuup pride pride pride pride pride!!!" In the end, the "I don't need help! My idea is fine! I'm so cool!" attitude just comes back to haunt you, no one else.
Watch what you say.
Thank you, Zippy
Do you like this forum? Do you want people to absolutely love your suggestions in the end? If the answer to both of those questions is "yes", then yeah... watch what the hell you say to those trying to help you.
You don't want to say something so stupid or so offensive that you find yourself permanently hated on this forum. Sure, you're nice and safe behind your keyboard, but you can still ruin your chances of anyone ever respecting your ideas.
This includes you joke thread makers too. You know who you are.
"Suggest ideas for me!"
"Guys so like my idea is more water mobs ahhahaa ok so everyone suggest what those would be while I run away and come back to collect other people's efforts!"
No, stop. Put on your big boy pants and make the effort yourself. Suggestions aren't meant to be some potluck thing where the OP doesn't have to do anything. Either make the suggestion yourself or don't bother pooping out a thread.
If you want others to give you smaller ideas and fixes for your idea, that's fine, but don't expect other people to make up the base of the suggestion for you.
Don't suggest blatant substitutes.
Yes, before you ask, an idea that goes like "let's replace this with this for people don't feel like getting this" WILL be stupid.
Don't be in the position where your brain turns off and you make a thread stating this: "I suggest that we have craftable goo in the game! Yeah! This is a good idea! It's made by like... combining a bucket of water with like string or something! It can be used the same way as slimeballs for people who don't feel like killing slimes! I'm smart! Support!"
Derp, no. Don't make slimeballs as if they were almost added or nothing. "For people who don't feel like..." excuses are retarded and you should feel bad if you use them. Don't suggest stuff like that.
"Why isn't this in the game yet?"
"Why hasn't Mojang done this yet?", "Why isn't this a thing?", "What was Mojang thinking?"
No. That is pure and utter arrogance mixed with frustration. Do not blame Mojang just because something you want isn't in the game. Don't speak like you know more about the game than the people who created it. You're crushing your own reputation when you say snooty things like that.
If you are so sure about where the game should be going, then don't waste your time here. Fly to Mojang and "fix" the game yourself. If you're as good as you think you are, then they'll hire you. Oh wait, you aren't that good? Oh, so then you shouldn't make those arrogant statements?
Sometimes, even a bunch of supports doesn't mean your suggestion is good.
This one kind of depresses me to add, but it's sadly true. You can have 2,000 supporters in a row but it's possible that your idea still does not fit Minecraft.
This is usually caused by a lot of people getting all starry-eyed over the idea without thinking about the long-term effects. Even that one guy that doesn't support a suggestion while the other 1,999 users do can still make a much better point than the 1,999 users combined.
An idea where Creepers turn into map erasing nukes is a bad idea. Even if the idea gets overwhelmed with supports, the idea is still bad (and the supporters should feel bad).
Don't sign your posts.
No. It doesn't look cool. No. It doesn't look professional. No, you mentally disagreeing and shaking your head at these very words do not remove the truth of the aforementioned statements.
We can see your username just fine. Your post is not the bottom of a contract or check. We do need reassurance of what your username is. It usually comes off as arrogance or a failed attempt to look "pro" with your suggestion.
We don't like seeing posts that look like the following:
i suggezt we have sandwicthes in da game. dey are crafted wit 2 bred and porkch0ps in thuh middle. thumps up so notch can see????????????
-iCan'tThink
Do not sign your posts. It is and forever will be dumb. Realize this and don't make the mistake.
Vague/Redundant Thread Titles
Thank you, Stealthman917.
These kinds of thread titles aren't the worst thing in the world, but they might not attract the attention you truly wanted. Thread titles such as "new mobs!!" or "new weapons!!" probably won't wow anyone.
Try to have at least the names of what you're suggesting in the thread title. Examples, green is good, grey is boring:
New Desert Temple Mob: The Ancient Locust
new desert temple mob
Aim for green. You'll be cooler that way.
Dumb/Random Thread Tags
Thank you, nightworld115.
Alright, so you made a thread about more uses for iron?
Neat, but don't use stupid out-of-context tags such as "add this jeb!", "toasters", "good idea", "olol", "herpy durr" and "support!" Refrain from letting yourself do that so you don't stupify your thread.
Don't make retarded one-sided polls
When you make dumb polls like that, people are gonna end up not voting. You're giving people two choices, they can be forced to vote only positive choices that they might not want, or they'll simply abstain from voting at all.
It's fairly hurr durrish when someone makes a really stupid suggestion and you see poll questions like this...
How good is my diamond bonemeal idea????
( ) best idea evar!!
( ) sort of the best idea evar!
( ) raelly good...
( ) kinda sorta gooood...
Restrain yourself from doing this. Make your poll answers cover all types of answers and not just one side of them.
Nonsensical crafting recipes
Thank you, GateFox.
We can understand that your new item idea is very valuable and therefore, should be rather expensive to craft. But even then, you still want your crafting recipe to be sensible enough, and not sloppily put together in a vain attempt to balance it.
"Hmm, I want this item to be very rare, so I'll just slap some diamond blocks in the recipe!" or "Hmm, that food I suggested that can fill all hunger points needs some balance. I got it! I'll make it so you have to craft bread with 6 emeralds!"
Please, just no.
Hesitation
Thank you, Itsoo1.
When you post a suggestion, jump straight to it, and don't give us a 2 paragraph preamble that has nothing to do with your suggestion. You don't need to introduce yourself. You don't need to reiterate what your forum username is. You don't need to go "Hi! This is signing on for another great idea!"
No. Don't do any of that. It doesn't boost the suggestion and it makes you look a bit dumb and goofy. Just give us the idea, and not open up with a story about how you came to trust Australians more. Example of something you shouldn't do.
"Yo wassup every1. This is CoolDawgyDawg up in dis crib with an awesome suggestion!! Minecraft is an awesome game and like I play it like every day that's how good it is omg. Okay so like I had this dream once that dis creeper wuz chasin me and like I kept running lololololololol that's how much I love dis game. Did any1 notice dat it's hard to find diamonds?!?!?!?!?!?1
Anyway, my idea is a new type cow, what it does is..."
If your intro paragraphs have something to do with the suggestion, that's fine, but we don't want some Alcoholics Anonymous intro that drags on for minutes because you think you're posting on Twitter.
"Better [Existing_thing_here]"
Thank you, 0_Zippy
If you want to suggest something to be better, then make it better. Don't slightly alter the stats of something to your liking and call it "fixed".
Do not suggest that you want "better pigmen" by making them insta-kill players in hardcore. Do not suggest that you want "better spiders" by making them move 5% slower but do 5% more damage. Slight alterations and sidegrades do not always mean "better".
If you want to make something better, try to suggest it in a way where nearly everyone wins and very little to no people lose if your suggestion were to be implemented. Do not "fix" something that based only on your opinion.
"Don't be lazy you guys!"
Thank you, Itsoo1.
Possibly one of the dumbest mistakes anyone can do here. Posting a suggestion means you give the suggestion, or at the very least, the entire framework of it.
Don't have your eyes drift apart from each other in a moment of durr causing you to make a vague suggestion, but then you gain the nerve to point to others and go "well omg it's your guys' job to fill in da blanks and complete da suggestion!!"
No, it is not our job to babysit your idea. Either do the work or don't fart out a thread. If you make this mistake, feel bad and deny yourself happiness for the remainder of your life. No recovery allowed.
Never assume that the well being of your suggestion is suddenly the job of everyone else. If there's ever a time where you think it is, punch yourself in the head as punishment for such a thought.
Don't ignore needed fixes to your thread when they're pointed out.
So you made a stupid thread about flying creepers and toaster ovens, making your thread a wishlist. So you want to save your thread? You can! Simply edit it in a way where it doesn't get locked! Cool right?!
When you break a forum rule and someone points it out, it's a smart idea to fix it as soon as possible so your thread doesn't get locked and forgotten. Don't simply reply with "oh um sorry" and then just not do anything at all.
Don't try to be funny and joke it off. Save your thread or don't bother making one.
Make sure your idea isn't too advanced.
Thank you, Proiclan.
Oh yes, your idea could be so specific and complex that it might even bypass the very scope of Minecraft itself. Example:
"I suggest we have military bases in the game! There will be like all these types of soldiers and infantry and each of them have their individual rank and backstory!"
Apart from the fact that this doesn't fit the game at all. This would be absolute hell to program. Imagine the trial and error bug fixing and work such a huge feature would need. In this case, not having it overall is better than attempting to make it exist.
Make sure your idea is within doable bounds, and not something the human race as a whole has never and probably can't achieve within this decade.
Do your homework.
Thank you, DarkStar634.
It's understandable that you may not spend your time looking at snapshots or the "upcoming features" page on the Minecraft Wiki, but if you want to avoid "this is already being implemented" replies, then you may have to make that effort.
It could be a bit embarrassing when you run in and go "uuuugh mojang come on omg we need bouncing slime blocks omgggg les goooooo" only to find out it was being planned the whole time. So... you know. Homework. Do a bit of it.
Don't assume we all know you & your suggestions.
Thank you, Smiliez7a
No matter how well-known or cool you think you are, please avoid posting in a way as if to assume everyone knows you and everyone has seen all of your threads.
You are not the John Travolta or Tom Cruise of the forum. Not everyone will force memories to be emptied in their brains to remember you and your threads 24/7.
"Yo you guys you guys omg I think the game should have jars of Nutella, if you read my previous suggestion than you know why my idea is good!!!"
Stupid, stupid, stupid and stupid. Bring all of the details up front. Don't do that reference crap where you leave the detail in a different thread or even a different website.
Don't be overly humble/self-pitying.
Thank you, Proiclan
"This idea is absolutely crap and no one will support, but ummm I'm gonna post it anyway. I think all cows should be fed 12 times before every time you collect milk from them. there. that's my super bad idea and you probably won't support this."
This is utterly senseless and pathetic. If your idea is so absolutely crap, why did you make the conscious decision to post it? No one's going to go "well you said it was bad so we forgive you and btw support =)".
No, things don't work that way. If you know your idea is derpy dumb. Then it's dumb. You being humble and passive-aggressively attacking yourself won't reshape our opinions. Grow some backbone.
Don't post YouTube videos to "help" your suggestion.
Thank you, sc1020
We don't care about some stupid Let's Play video where some guy goes "wassup dis is my let's play so I think we need to have cities and quests bcuz dat would be so cool omg imagine if dat was in da omg daT BE SO BOSS YO"
Yeah cool, the opinion of some talkative youtuber will totally rewire our minds into thinking higher of the suggestion. Make a suggestion where the base is you, and not some slow-talking sloth in an unoriginal video. Do not be a tool.
Eye-Gouging Font and Colors
Thank you, ChaosBahamut
Don't you love reading posts like this? What, are you saying this font is tolerable. Well about THIS. Is this better?
What, you're saying this font could be worse as well? How's is this? Is herpy dumb Comic Sans font better?
OMGGGG HOW'S THIS! ISN'T THIS JUST PURE EYE THERAPY RIGHT HERE?
Yeah, the message is simple. Stick to normal fonts. Or at worst, just stay away from the Comic Sans one. Hey mods, can you hear me? Get rid of that font. It's forum cancer. Oh don't use bright colored text on a bright background like this. Herpity herpity hurr.
Baggage Carrying
Thank you, yoshi9048
Possibly one of, if not the most destructive thing you could ever do in a thread.
"Don't post in my thread if you are Theriasis!"
"ONLY POSITIVE POSTS ALLOWED!"
"Oh, you again, your ideas usually suck and this one probably does too."
Seriously, do not ever do this. You will cause 2 things to happen: a thread derailing flamewar and possibly some permanent damage to your suggestion and you. Do not dictate what people can and can't do in a thread (this very thread has the exception).
Telling someone not to post in your thread will not reprogram those people to not do so. If you have a problem with someone do one, some or all of the following. Report them if they're trolling/flaming.
"Let's outright change this mechanic we're all familiar with!"
Thank you, ZTick
I'm curious to what posseses people to make threads like this. I'm assuming some of them have to do with senseless selfishness, as some of those threads start out with "uhh ok dis is how da game should be bcuz dats wat I think!" Yeah, that's an excellent way to get us to support you...
"HI WASSUP mojang should make it where torches go out at random and um... and um... and like um you have to relight them I think this idea is good and should be added so support because I think that!"
No. Stop. Game mechanics that worked well for over 4 years aren't the result of a positive accident. They are deliberate, well-balanced things that keep the game going. Understand that changing a good system for the worse "bcuz u think it'd be cool" is not only retarded but... No that's it, it's just retarded.
Alternate Accounts
Thank you, Itsoo1
You don't have to be a mod to figure out how insanely dumb and obvious another account is. Lol here's an example:
BirdLover91, "Les add Herobrine! He is relly populer and shud be added! DO IT NOTCH!"
FalconGuy, "I aggreee! he IS popular and it wud be awesome to add! suh-port!!"
Congrats, you just embarrassed yourself on an extremely high scale and risked getting ALL of your accounts locked and forgotten. Alternate accounts. Do not have them.
Don't link to other sites/threads to explain something.
"Yoooooooooo check this out! Mah superfly suggestion is creeper square dancing! You dope? You down? You dig? If you don't know what I'm talking about, just visit this website, reading the ENTIRE thing and my idea will just pop out at you!"
If you do this, you need to remove one of your limbs, and then keep that limb in sight range at all times to remind you not to repeat this mistake. That's the only way you can learn. The ONLY way. No, explain every bit of your idea in your thread. Don't get lazy and rely on some other website because your fingers "don't feel like it".
Don't mess with polls.
If you can't handle anyone voting for negative choices on your poll, then... don't... make a poll? Don't be a big baby and start switching votes around so it looks like the positive votes are the popular ones. Don't empty out the votes, vote for the best choices, and then close the poll so it looks like you got "perfect responses". This looks suspicious when everyone in your thread was saying "no support" the whole time.
Don't flood your posts with line breaks.
So basically...
Like don't develop a fetish for your enter key
We don't like doing the extra scrolling because you took too much soma and fell asleep a bit where the enter key was...
Know what I mean?
This is annoying. Don't do it.
Okay?
Don't make stuff up.
Some of us are die-hard Minecraft fans, and some of us might follow every update note and tweet about the game. So when you walk in and go "Mojang confirmed they were gonna add capes on magma cubes!" You know what's gonna happen? Someone will catch that lie and you will die of embarrassment.
Captain Obvious Thread Titles
You know the ones. "How to make deserts more fun (Please Read!)" or "Football Playing Creepers (Details inside)" You better bet your Scooby Doo underoos that you'll look goofy making thread titles like this.
We already know you want your suggestion read, hence... why you made it exist. "Details inside"? Well I should hope so, because suggestions with no details get locked. Regardless, you don't need to inform us that there's "more in the the thread, plz click!", I know it sucks not being able to type that 4-paragraph suggestion in the thread title alone, but it's okay, that one extra click to go inside your thread won't kill us.
Idea Cramming
I figured you'd open this spoiler, because you thought "Wait, what does she mean by 'idea cramming'?"
It's generally done when the suggester didn't make the suggestion with enough detail beforehand, and as a result of this, starts cramming in stats and rushed bare bones details in a vain attempt to not get a locked thread. This is also done in the form of the suggester not updating their first post like they should, and add more details via just replies.
More often than not, the result of idea cramming is usually bad to mediocre. Imagine making a turkey, running out of stuffing halfway through, and instead of taking the time get more stuffing, you panic and start stuffing the turkey with other random things just so you get to call the turkey "full". Still not getting it? Ugh, fine. Here's an example:
Suggester: i suggest we add lizards because they'd be pretty cool in deserts
Reply #1: So vague it's vague.
Reply #2: more detail please before this gets locked.
Reply #3: What do these lizards do?
Suggester: uhhh ok let me think... they do like 3 damage I guess and they spawn only in the day and maybe ummm.. they attack spiders too? yeah that's it!
Had the example suggester just added all the details up front, he wouldn't need to scramble to make his suggestion better.
Walls of Text
Basically the opposite of the "too many line breaks" problems. Don't you hate it when just a couple enter key hits would solve the problem? But some people just don't get the hint. When people see a fat slab of text, you know what people are gonna do? They will click the back button before even reading the first word. On top of that, it makes it difficult to quote and pick apart separate things in a post when it's a fat slab of text. You know what else? Walls of text also make it feel like the poser is just rambling about something instead of getting to the good bits. They just talk about the same thing over and over. They don't leave the topic when they should, they just keep harping on the same thing. Anyone who does that needs to eat a fart. Don't you hate when people harp on the same topic? I sure do! It's like, "Hello, change the record!" You know what, I changed my mind, anyone that lingers on a topic too long should eat TWO farts, without salt. Well maybe a little salt, but it wouldn't matter. The salt would just fall through the fart. I love salt, when I was a little kid I just loved the salt. My mom would always be like "Don't eat too much of that you'll get all sick!" but I just kept eating the salt lol. I'm not making this up, I actually had that relationship with salt when i was younger. For realsies. Walls of text are bad by the way, and you shouldn't have them. Honestly though, the salt thing. Nowadays too much salt will slow me down, so sometimes I gotta take the low sodium option. Ever have that low sodium bacon? It's sounds like it might taste bad but it's not. You can taste the difference a bit but at least you're not so slowed down by all the salt! And it's a healthier option overall so it's a huge bonus if maybe you're trying to drop some pounds or something. I made Canadian bacon once, but I never ate it. I just stick to normal bacon, I like that better.
Necro'ing your crappy, unrevised threads.
Generally caused by users that don't grasp the concept of "Dude, let it go." So your idea of luring Ghasts closer to you with popsicles (you know, in the Nether) received 34 no-supports in a row, and the thread is now 6 months old. Hmm, I wonder what bumping it while not changing a single thing in the idea will cause people to do?
When you bump crap like that, it has people believe your brain gave up on life, or you're a troll joke threader that's just begging for more angry attention. Know when to let a herp suggestion of yours just die out.
Making a banner for a stupid idea.
This is why you want to wait to make a banner. Wait until your idea has been established as good, then make the banner after that.
However, if your idea is absolutely terrible and if full of "no support", then what the hell is the point of slapping the banner in your sig? All you will do is bring more negative attention to the idea.
Posting extremely small ideas.
In case you're wondering, yes, an idea can be fully explained in one sentence and not be vague. Guess what though, there's already a thread for that.
Don't make an entirely new thread just post this...
"Let's give animals a few more sounds of each action type so we don't they all sound less redundant."
Okay, a decent idea I guess? But the idea is so small that there's not much for a critic of any kind to assess completely. And the thread comes down to people posting just "support" or "no support" without really offering any extensive discussion. Please just keep this in the Small Suggestions sticky thread.
Confusing Colloquialisms
Having cute little nicknames for things in the game isn't a crime, and can be funny if used correctly. However, some people really go off road with these things and use nicknames that are so confusing it makes your teeth itch.
When you talk about "them green quiet explody things", we know you're talking about Creepers. If you call them something so out there like "those boom boom fellas", you're gonna raise some eyebrows. Either use a very easy colloquialism or just call out something by it's actual name.
Ideas Only Good For Multiplayer
I agree, having boats that could hold more people would be fun. Imagine the adventure you and your lads will have. Sailing the seas, plunder them ships and hoisting them flags ye salty dogs! Buuuuut... in singleplayer, this boat would be meaningless code sitting in the game. So the idea only works for one side of gameplay.
Yes, message carrying pigeons would be fun, but in singleplayer, the birds are just wasting oxygen in the higher parts of the map. In short: try to make things for both single and multiplayer.
"Update idea for [version number here]"
I don't want to speak for Mojang, but it's safe to say that if they saw your idea and considered it, they wouldn't go "Well, this suggestion is something for 1.9, so now it has to be in that exact version now! No exceptions!" No, they would put it in whatever version they felt it'd be best in, and not one that you spouted out.
And it's probably doubtful that your idea would just so happen to make it in the very next update that's about to come out anyway so..? Don't... title your threads like that?
Selective Arguing
Do you want to fully defend a suggestion against negativity? Yes? Then god damn, don't ignore them or reply to just tiny parts of them just because "you wanna reply to what you feel like."
If the critic took 8 minutes to type out many questions that require serious answers, then do them the favor of giving them the time they gave you. Don't reply to 1/8th of their post and leave everything else answered or undefended. This showcases rage-inducing cowardice laziness.
No, don't expect to ignore posts and have that go unnoticed. No, do not refuse to reply to someone in hopes that they'll just go away. If a non-supporter points out flaws or good questions and you just skip over them, then they've got the upper hand.
If you have the time to respond to every single solitary supporter with "omggggggggggggggg thx for the support!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" followed by a bunch of stupid, spammed, happy emotes... then debating some criticism won't kill you.
Incorrect Listing of Pros and Cons
At the time that I added this entry, I'm seeing people listing pros and cons after their suggestion, and a lot of them are doing it wrong. Pros are benefits, cons are negative/costly things, the two are not opinionated things people think they are.
"Was crackin' peeps, what it doooOOOOO???!! My idea is that players can trip over their own cats hahahahahaha! The pros are that's it's pretty funny but the cons are that it's so funny that you'll be distracted from the game by laughin' so hard!"
That is not how pros and cons work, that is 9 kinds of dumb. Please do not be that type of poster.
Misleading Thread Titles
These happens in two scenarios. The first one being that the OP doesn't understand that their thread title can hold multiple meanings, and the second is when the OP knows better but gives a thread a dumb name just to attract more attention. Either way, it's pretty failish.
Also, no, do not use a thread title that's a first fragment of an incomplete sentence. So titling a thread "Remove Magma Cubes", and then your first post continues that with "from spawning near lava, because they fall in and get stuck." is something you need to feel bad about.
It's simple, keep your thread a relatively short and descriptive synopsis. And not something with a triple meaning.
CamelCase
Can You Guys Guess What's So Painful About This Text? Oh I Think You Know. What Part Of The Brain Makes People Think This Is Acceptable?
Auuugh, everyone... STOP doing this. That is not how you use your shift key. That capitalization fetish is liquefied eye cancer.
Generally Hated and Inferior Suggestions
Though sometimes, some of these suggestions can be made good. Keyword: Some.

Negative Criticism and Defeat
Because we want revenge after seeing "No support." (Image)
The Overachiever's Guide
Made by Cerroz. This stuff is encouraged, but NOT required. (Unfinished)
This purpose of the rest of the guide is to not make a bad suggestion, often telling you how to go from "bad" to "good". The overachiever's guide tells you how to go from "good" to "much, much better". This is only one of two sub-guides not written by Theriasis (the other being 0_Zippy for making the balance guide), meaning this guide will be much more positive.
Ever play a video game that involves getting more than 100% completion? Or being able to earn better than a gold medal, which is usually a platinum one? This guide will try to help you get that. If you only care to make just decent, okay suggestions with "eh" amounts of work, this guide is not for you. Who is it for? The people who want their ideas to shine so hard that we can't look directly at it too fast, the kind that most likely make the suggestions hall of fame and get showered with "I support!" for many pages.
Note: Following the guide to a 'T' may also involve you having to learn program-using skills you haven't nailed down quite yet.
Apart from the suggestion being good, proper readability and formatting is one of the most desired things for the reader of a suggestion. If the format of a suggestion is too sloppy, it brings the integrity of the suggestion down. Format a suggestion like you want that A+ grade.
You can't really have a post without text, so you might as well arrange that text as beautifully as humanly possible. This includes good spelling, proper grammar and proper punctuation placement. If you have a long suggestion that has many stats, attributes and features, then it may be best to split that up into some nice sections with pretty headers.
The rest of the suggestions guide mentions how you need proper formatting, but this sub-guide will give much more ideas and insight to that. Make sure your suggestion is split up into nice sized paragraphs - not too long, not too short. Also, even though this part isn't as necessary, but if you can, make sure your paragraphs encompass points properly, rather than having single points splashed around multiple paragraphs, but that really depends on how you present it so that part isn't painfully important. That's a mixed bag.
If a paragraph is too short, it might not even be a paragraph at all and you probably can attach more to it. If it's too long, you could slowly bore reader's until the next paragraph hits. Paragraphs that are too long can overwhelm and "tire" the reader, as if you're telling a super long joke that should have reached a punchline 2 minutes ago, you don't want that. In other words, long paragraphs can come off as rambling. Even this very paragraph is probably boring you now. Sorry guys, do you forgive me?
Lastly, let's talk about headers. Headers are the most awesome way to split up and organize a suggestion. Make those headers nice and big, and if you want, a nice fitting easy-to-read color. For bonus points, maybe make an image of header text like I've been doing. Maybe slap another smaller image to match what the header reads for more bonus points, just don't overdo it and clutter it.
Note: To refine your post better, you may need to do some post editing in [BB] mode.
I'll give a brief here's-good-and-here's-bad example.
(Good Example) My mob idea is the Zombified Scorpion! They are only found in deserts and Desert Temples!
Appearance:
[insert image here]
Mind you, they can eerily change their color depending on day or night. They have a browner hue with black eyes in the daytime, and a dark blue hue with purple eyes at night (making them a bit harder to see during that time).
Very rarely, they can appear completely black, and this is when they are most dangerous. These ones are only found in Desert Temples.
Attributes and Behavior:Health:
Daytime: 5 hearts
Nighttime: 10 hearts
Black: 17 hearts
Damage:
Daytime: 2 hearts
Nighttime: 3.5 hearts (10% chance to poison)
Black: 5 hearts (60% chance to poison + 20% chance for slowness)
Like black spiders, daytime scorpions will only attack if provoked. Nighttime and black ones will attack once they see you. Black scorpions have triple sight as that of any other regular hostile mob.
Drops:
All scorpions, as you could have guessed, drop their venomous tails. They can be used in dispensers as short range-only weapons when powered by redstone. They will not poison in this case.
All scorpions drop normal tails. Black scorpions drop black tails which do an extra 1hp of damage in dispensers, and can be used as a potion ingredient to turn a potion into the II version of whatever it is.
If you can manage to kill a scorpion just as it changes from brown to dark blue, you will get a "strange scorpion tail", which can be used to make a Potion of Madness, causing any affected mob to change disposition. It has no effect on players.
(Bad Example) Hello mcforums. My idea is a zombified scorpion, it's brown in daytime, blue at night and very rarely black in temples. they drop scorpion tails which can be put in dispensers and can hurt mobs for 1 damage except black scorpion tails that do 2 dmg.
you can also get an irregular tail if you kill a zombified scoprion as it changes from day to night. these new tails can make a potion of madness.
I personally think the best suggestions absolutely need some good images. There is no collection of words I can think of to express the fact that good suggestions should have this. Yes, it does give something pretty to look at and gives us more than just text, text and more text. But it also helps us readers dive into the mind of the suggester and makes us see what they want us to see. We see the suggester's vision. Ever have a good idea but couldn't express it good enough because others just need to see it?
If you want to show the readers how creative you are, you probably need to obtain some moderate to extreme image editing skills. In some lucky cases, you can find an image without needing to do so, but you making stuff yourself showcases how serious and skilled you are at giving ideas. Another thing people should know, is that even though an image brings home a point, it still might take some editing to make it look better. An example is images that have backgrounds... Let me just show you...
Are both images good? Sure. But chances are, you find the right one better as the background is transparent. The left one just comes off as being blockier while the right looks more defined and sleeker. Sometimes we need to apply that creative elbow grease to make an image shine a little more.
There's a special case for mob suggestions. If you want to make a model of the mob, you have two choices: the first one requires extremely critical and advanced 3D modeling with programs such as Maya or 3DS Max and very, very careful texturing work. Or... the second choice, which requires almost no 3D modeling skill at all and involves a program made specifically for Minecraft in mind called Techne! See? Uncle Cerroz helps you out.
In the case of sprites, it's pretty easy. Just make a pixelish 16x16 image, and resize it. In most image editing programs, there are options such as "Bicubic" and "Bilinear" resizing, but "Pixel Resize" or "Nearest Neighbor" ensures the image will be nice, sharp/pixelly with no blur. Just make sure to resize it in dimensions divisible by 16.
Sadly, this guide covers just suggestions and won't provide a tutorial on how to use these programs. Some quick Google or Youtube searches will get you on the right track. Don't worry, Techne doesn't take long to understand. It's a pretty simplistic program. Another note, make sure your images are relevant. If your mob is based on a Chinese insect, you only need to post a picture of the insect, not a picture of China.
If you want an idea to make the suggestions hall of fame, good images are absolutely required!!
Image Formats (Added 9/28/05)
Anyone who has been using the internet for a week probably know of all image formats. The most sought after and prominent format is PNG, because it a.) has a very small filesize and b.) can support any type of transparency (being 'index' and 'alpha'). JPEG is also fine, assuming the image is not too compressed and transparency is not needed.
A GIF file can work if you make an animated image, but take note that those kind of files have very exclusive amounts of colors and there's no working around that. GIF images are 8-bit only and can only support this amount of colors: 3, 7, 15, 31, 63, 127 and 255. A GIF can make an image very grainy and loss-of-colors, so optimize it wisely. GIF files can only support 'index' transparency, so you can't have an opaque slowly blend into transparency (which is 'alpha' transparency). It's only 100% transparency and 100% opaque. No in-betweens.
"But Cerroz, is it possible to have both alpha transparency and animation?" Yes there is. There is a very unique image format known an APNG, but making these kind of files can be very tedious and tricky, and may require many tries before you get them just right. Also, APNG files are not supported by all browsers, so some users only see the first frame, and not a full animation. Sadly, you can't have everything.
There are too many good programs out there to name them all. The most obvious one is Adobe Photoshop. For GIF's, I use Jasc Animation Shop, which is not one of the better programs, but it's one of the easiest to use. Note that Photoshop can make GIF's too, but it might take a smidge longer for you. For APNG files, APNG Assembler is a solid choice.
When you're being an overachiever and stretching your arms out because you're trying to feel the cold medal of that platinum medal just out of reach, you can't just have a good idea, you gotta have the pizzazz to present it beautifully as well.
Talk about eating your cake and presenting it too right? And... maybe still eating it. It's cool you gave us the awesome idea, but can you explain it so cleverly and smoothly that you can hook us more and more, making the idea triply more irresistible?
If you happen to be a clever writer, or just a clever speaker, chances are you're gonna nail this part of the suggestion. There's a difference between "Here's an idea you'll all like." and "Alright, I'm gonna need everyone to sit down. If I'm gonna be serving this good idea cake to all of you, you can't crowd around me. Look at the cake though! It's got a picture of a unicycle lizard on it!" If you truly believe you're funny, you can use that humor as well.
Language Barrier
I think it's safe to say that you already know this forum is English based. If English is not your primary language and you are struggling with it, my advice is this: hang in there. It's understandable you won't master a language just so you can make a good suggestion, but I advise giving your suggestion a rough draft to an English-speaking person.
As the very top of Theriasis' guide states, if we can't handle negativity, we shouldn't make a thread at all. Though you soon-to-be-overachievers know this already. Don't be afraid of negative reception. Grab it! Use it! That feedback is your ultimate ticked to make a gold suggestion into a diamond.
I can promise you that the most famous suggestions did not start out as refined as they are now, and if they did, they probably have a lot to improve anyway. I personally get a bit worried if I get no negative responses sprinkled in here and there, because I don't get to see what to fix in my idea.
If you get too much factual negative responses and the core of your suggestion has been proven to be a bad idea, it may be best to move on to a different idea. As not all ideas can be repaired.
If someone makes a very long post stating negatives on your idea and you want to prove them wrong, then respond to all of the points. If you just "respond to what you want" and skip over many negative points, that can showcase laziness and that you're trying to avoid negativity. That is not the kind of attention you want. If you can't refute a factual point, then openly admit that the critic is correct, and if possible, try to fix what said critic brought up.
This is the most unique section of this sub-guide, as this is this without a doubt the most rare thing ever seen in a suggestion. Some suggesters have uploaded videos helping explain an idea, but maybe once or twice has one gone through the effort of making one, uploading it and presenting it.
Provided your idea is actually good, making a good video will put your chances of a hall of fame place at roughly 95%. As expected, providing such a thing will require some serious effort. The video editing software I use is Sony Vegas, but if you have basic knowledge of video editing, almost any software will do. Even something basic like Windows Movie Maker can work.
I made a short video for my Ancient Zombie suggestion, and it wasn't anything spectacular, but it was still awesome to see in a suggestion. Here it is:
If you can manage to animate your mob and put that in a video or .gif image, then you are in. Like. Flint.
tl;dr - Use your brain and don't embarrass yourself.
Q: Won't this increase lag?
A: Absolutely not. The title of this suggestion and big red letters at the top of this post aren't lying. If you want to know how, then I suggest you actually read this post.
Q: Will this change terrain? Will this break existing worlds?
A: No. Terrain change is not necessary. Existing worlds can be converted fairly easily with a process described later in this post.
Q: How can sunlight or rain work with infinite vertical space?
A: I suggest you read Coping with sunlight, because it's too complex for a tl;dr.
Q: I have a different question but still don't feel like reading this post. What do I do?
A: Too bad, read the FAQ. I put way too much work into this for the entirety of it to be ignored.
Overview:
In Minecraft, the sky is the limit - literally. It doesn't matter how many thousands of blocks a player has traveled, or what dimension they're in, or even if they're playing in creative or survival, the highest they can ever build is up to a height of 256. Why is that? If Minecraft can have a world that's infinite in the north, in the south, in the east, and in the west, why can't that world be infinite up and down too?
In Minecraft's earliest days, in Classic and Indev, the world was not infinite in any direction. This was because the entire world needed to be generated at the same time, and the entire world needed to be simulated at the same time as well. This led to a conundrum - the bigger the world, the more it lagged.
Notch didn't like this. He knew his players liked to explore and build large creations, so he found a way to make the world truly infinite. When the Minecraft '' class='bbc'>Infdev came out, it brought with it truly infinite worlds. Suddenly, players could travel hundreds of thousands of blocks in any direction, and never encounter a barrier, or become too laggy.
The Infdev update brought about a very large change to Minecraft worlds to accomplish this feat. For the first time, instead every world being just a single huge piece, they were broken up into a two-dimensional grid of pieces, called chunks. Through breaking the world up into pieces, this 'chunk system' enabled infinite worlds by letting Minecraft create new pieces and simulate them only when it needs to.
Why does that not apply to the vertical axis? Because the type of 'chunk system' Minecraft uses right now is a linear one, which, by using only a two-dimensional grid to map out chunks, means that it is impossible for chunks to stack on top of one another, and by extension, meaning that a single chunk must cover the entire vertical space. This brings back the problem that the Infdev update was supposed to eradicate, now only with chunks, instead of an entire world; the bigger a chunk is, the more laggy it is. You can't just increase the height limit and make chunks taller, because it will become laggier, and laggier, and laggier to do it.
That's why, to fix this, Minecraft must change over to a cubic chunk system. Under this system, 163 block chunks are aligned on a three-dimensional grid, completely eliminating maximum height as an aspect of lag.
The immediate benefits:
•Minecraft worlds become as virtually infinite vertically as they are horizontally: The absolute limit being Y = ±30,000,000.
•A large FPS increase: Alpha testers report an FPS increase of 100~200%.
•Increase in running capability: Computers running Minecraft on Tiny render distance will handle only 30% the blocks they do now.
The possible features:
•Spherical render/load distance: Reduce handled blocks by up to 30% by cutting corners made of unneeded chunks.
•Server chunk occlusion/exclusion: Reduce bandwidth usage and defeat hackers by only sending data for visible chunks.
•Three-dimensional biomes: Save biome data per chunk rather than per block column, create volcanoes with magma chambers, underground rivers, tropical skylands floating over icy taigas, and more.
The disadvantages:
•Unloaded gravity-pause: Falling non-player entities and fluids will be forced to pause their fall if they reach unloaded chunks, but will resume falling when those chunks are loaded.
•Slow falling-pause: Players with slower computers and smaller render distances will have falling occasionally paused as they fall into unloaded chunks, until new chunks can be loaded.
The problems:
•Current sunlight and rain calculation methods cannot work with infinite vertical space: The solution to this is described here.
•Current BiomeDecorator cannot work with multiple vertical chunks simultaneously: The BiomeDecorator code must be altered to function correctly with this, or removed.
•Current cave generation method is executed an extra time for each vertical chunk created simultaneously, leading to lag spikes on world generation: Cave generation's method must be altered to suit this system more.
•Current grass/dirt generation algorithm forces additional chunk requests when chunks are loaded, causing chunks to load slower than they should: This algorithm must be replaced with something else.
Changes in how things work:
Obviously, the implementation of this new chunk system will change quite a few things. These changes are mostly either necessary or in the interest of increased efficiency. Such changes are categorized and explained below.
How worlds will be stored:
How the current storage works, and what changes:
Interestingly enough, the current method of storage, the Anvil format, is derived from the storage method that the original Cubic Chunks mod used. The Anvil format stores individual chunk as a series of 163 quasi-cubic chunks. These 'fake' cubic chunks allow for easier reference of specific data, but they still can't be separated from each other, meaning that it fails to reap the full benefits of this system. Even so, the change allowed Mojang to double the maximum height with no performance hit. Chunks are stored in groups of 322, inside 'MCRegion' files, for a total of 1024 chunks.
By nature, cubic chunks does away with the 'quasi-cubic' nonsense. In terms of chunk grouping, instead of using groups of 323 chunks, new "3DRegion" files would contain groups of 163. This means each 3DRegion file contains 4096 chunks, four times as many as MCRegion files. However, each 3DRegion contains only one fourth the amount of blocks. For per-chunk positional metadata, 3DRegion files would use the same number of bits as MCRegion files, after compression. Calculations show that the same area encompassed by a single MCRegion file would consume 64 kilobytes of extra space with 4 3DRegion files, which is nothing.
Converting existing worlds:
Most people are probably wondering something like "But won't this totally destroy all existing worlds?". Absolutely not; conversion could not be simpler. When a non-cubic world is loaded after the implementation of this system, a conversion process will begin and convert the entire world at once(To avoid making chunk loading take longer during play). First, all existing MCRegion files will be divided into quarters to create 3DRegion files. Then, all existing chunks are divided into sixteenths using the quasi-cubic properties to identify boundaries. After that, conversion is done.
The "isEmpty" flag optimization:
A 1-bit flag is added to each chunk, named "isEmpty". If the chunk consists of 100% air blocks, this bit is 1, any other case makes it 0. When the bit is 1, all data for the chunk besides the isEmpty flag is deleted and ignored, which reduces filesize. Empty chunks are never loaded, and locations where they occur are merely simulated as entities reside in them. The chunk will only load when something requires saving inside it.
Changes to terrain, ores, etcetera:
Terrain:
By default, nothing will change. Small bits of terrain generation code need to be reconfigured to work properly with Cubic Chunks.
Biomes:
By default, nothing will change.
Ore generation:
By default, nothing will change.
Structures:
By default, nothing will change.
The Void:
After conversion to Cubic Chunks, the void and bedrock layer will still exist and generate as they always have. However, the void(Not the bedrock layer!) will not exist as a hard limit and is able to be moved, but not removed, by editing an associated NBT data tag inside a world's level.dat. This feature, that allows for increasing the maximum depth, is intentionally disabled without external programs, to prevent terrain change of any sort. It is intended to be used by experienced mapmakers and world generation mods only.
Superflat settings:
Existing superflat worlds will not change. However, new superflat worlds will gain a new decoration parameter, 'void'. Inclusion of this parameter will cause the void to form below the lowest defined layer. Exclusion of it will cause all layers below the lowest defined layer to copy the settings of that layer.
Coping with sunlight:
There used to be a solution here, but it wasn't deemed good enough by Jeb. Suggest solutions in this thread.
Changes to servers:
Settings:
There's a setting inside the Server.properties file called 'max-build-height'. The setting makes it impossible for any player to place or remove blocks above that height.
With the implementation of Cubic Chunks, a new setting named "maximum-generation-depth" would be added. The void, bedrock layers, and magma layers will generate normally at and above the Y level designated by the value of this setting.
Chunk occlusion/exclusion:
Using the raytracing methods already available in the code and used for explosion calculations, servers can identify which chunks are visible to a player, within safe assumptions, and only send the data for those chunks. This both reduces bandwidth usage, and cripples the usefulness of X-Ray cheats.
Render/Load distance alterations:
After the implementation of Cubic Chunks, view distances' radii will apply to the vertical axis too. This reduces handled blocks in the cases of tiny and short render distances, and increases them in the cases of normal and far render distances. This can be optimized by utilizing a spherical render distance instead of a cubic one, which would reduce handled blocks in all distances except Far.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: This is impossible.
A: No it's not. See below.
Q: Is this available as a mod?
A: Not yet! But it will be!
Q: I like X-ray! What if I don't want it to be broken?
A: First of all, breaking X-ray hacks will only be possible to do in multiplayer. That said, the system that would break X-ray would be possible to disable by the server owner. If the owner doesn't disable the system, then they don't want you using X-ray, and you should not be doing what the server owner doesn't want in the first place.
Q: I play on a PvP/Anarchy/Raid/Faction server. Won't this system let people pillar up into the sky and create a base thousands of blocks in the air and never be found?
A: No.
Q: I like Minecraft's current height limits. What if I don't want to have an infinite sky or infinite underground?
A: If this system is added, all worlds will not automatically gain an infinite underground. As stated below, the Void will remain in all worlds, even after the conversion to Cubic Chunks. The ability to remove the Void will simply be there. As for infinite space in the sky, the current build limit is over one hundred blocks above any terrain that vanilla Minecraft can possibly generate. It is ENTIRELY your decision on whether or not you take advantage of this height. If you play on a server, like stated above, the server owner can set a maximum build height. If s/he doesn't, then don't play on their server - you don't play on servers where the server owners allow things you don't like. Why would you play on an anarchy server if you hate being stolen from and killed?
Q: Will this affect Redstone at all?
A: No. This system will simply make it possible to make larger redstone circuitry than before.
Q: Won't this break existing worlds?
A: No. Existing worlds can be easily converted by dividing each MCRegion file into 4 pieces, then slicing the existing 256 block-high chunks inside them into 16 individual chunks.
Q: Won't this affect mods? Won't mod authors have a hard time updating their mods?
A: The answer to this question depends solely on the answer to the following two questions: Do parts of the modification code rely on chunk data/metadata? Does the mod author want to take advantage of the features of the new chunk system? If the answers to the first and second question are both "No", then updating a mod to this system should be very easy and quick. If the answer to the first question is "Yes", then those parts of the code will need to be rewritten somewhat, but in most cases, the changes should be fairly quick and easy. The only time that it should be hard to update a mod to this system, is if the answer to the second question is "Yes".
Q: Won't this require a total rewrite of the mod API if that's released first?
A: No. Whether or not even a small part of the mod API needs to be rewritten depends on the way that it is implemented and whether or not there are API inclusions for chunk handling and other chunk-related behavior.
Q: Could a player fall into unloaded chunks if chunks aren't loaded fast enough?
A: No, they could not, and for several reasons. Minecraft has a terminal velocity, though it might not seem like it. This velocity is slower than it should take to load new chunks below the player. In cases with exceptionally slow computers, even if the player did manage to reach an unloaded chunk, their fall would be paused until that chunk can be loaded.
Q: What would happen when water, sand, or a mob falls into an unloaded chunk?
A: Nothing. The water/sand/mob would freeze in place until the chunk is loaded and it can continue moving. You can already see this same thing happening on the horizontal axis.
Q: What will happen to the Void?
A: It will still exist, along with all its effects. The only difference is that the Void is no longer a hard limit and it can be moved. After the conversion to Cubic Chunks, the Void's location will be stored in a world's ' class='bbc'>level.dat, and this location can be changed with NBT editing tools. When and where the Void exists, chunks will cease to generate.
Q: Will this affect terrain?
A: No. However, terrain generators will gain the ability to use infinite height.
Q: Will this affect ore generation?
A: No. Ore is a part of terrain generation. As stated above, terrain will not be changed.
Q: Won't all current terrain generators be incompatible with this system and need to be rewritten?
A: No. Terrain generators work independently of chunks. When a chunk is generated for the first time, it calls the terrain generator and receives a specific section of the resultant terrain to save inside itself. Because of this, some custom terrain generators can generate steep terrain all the way to Y256, where you can experience a large, flat cut-off. Since there are no chunks above Y256 to call the terrain generator for terrain, no terrain exists there.
Q: What would happen if there's a huge solid ceiling so far above you that it is unloaded? Wouldn't you just see the sky, just with everything being completely dark?
A: Yes. This already happens on the horizontal axis, and it is an issue with sky rendering, not this chunk system. As such, this has nothing to do with this suggestion. Please do not post about this.
Q: If you go deep underground, will your plants grow/ores smelt/animals grow?
A: No, because those chunks would be unloaded, just as if you had walked far away. This is a flaw with any chunk system, regardless of shape. It is a necessary evil that allows Minecraft to have infinite worlds. The only way to fix this would be to introduce a separate new system that works with chunks as they are loaded and unloaded. This suggestion deals with the chunk system itself, and not sister processes. Because of that, that is outside of the scope of this suggestion. Please do not post about this.
[WIP] The Cubic Chunks Mod! (Tall Worlds Mod):
Cuchaz has taken it upon himself to bring us the glorious Cubic Chunks, since Mojang refuses to do so.
Cuchaz is using a API of his own creation to help assist in the making of this mod, and he's quite far along, as seen in these two tech demo videos:

With the basic functionality in place - a complete overhaul of the basic chunk system, and height limit removed - this whole concept can already be considered proven. What remains is making sure everything else functions correctly under the new chunk system. In any case, stay tuned for future updates if it interests you(If it doesn't, then you are the weakest link - goodbye!).
You can follow the mod's development in much more depth in its very own topic!

Please help us get word out of this suggestion! Share this with your friends, with Minecraft celebrities if you're familiar with them, or even with Mojangsters like Jeb or Dinnerbone! (Do not share this with Notch. Notch doesn't work with Minecraft anymore.)
The purpose of this suggestion is to have Cubic Chunks implemented in Vanilla. Being available as a modification does not fulfill that purpose. The modification featured in this suggestion is to act as a proof-of-concept only(Note: Its being featured here is to act as a proof-of-concept. The modification itself is on its way to becoming a fully fledged modification).

You should probably mention what UHC means to anyone new. It means "Ultra Hardcore," and it means that you do not naturally regenerate health, even at max hunger.
I love the concept btw. But if you were to add a couple more plug-ins like spectator mode for dead players, aka angels, and other simple plug-ins, that would make your server much better. Also, a short and simple tutorial to the server before you randomly spawn would be great.
Other than that, I'll do the best I can to survive! o_o
Edit: Your leaderboard only displays minutes. When you pass one hour, it resets back to 0 minutes, even though you have played 60.

Hmm, I wasn't aware of some of the fishing mechanics you two have mentioned. Thanks! Although, I don't really see the point of Fishing unless there's significant benefit to it (which would likely be in the long run). I asked in an attempt to justify going for it xD.

Wow it's been a while lol.
Anyways, everything looks amazing as usual. I hope to jump on when college starts again. Could you add me to the white-list anyways? I changed my IGN twice lol: It's now Ex2c. (I didn't like Puni77 and I didn't really like iSpi xD)
Btw the Free map looks super legit.

Raiding... It's fun, I'll give it that. But honestly, trading is more constructive in the long run, especially for a solo survivalist such as myself. I'm not built to raid anything stronger than 1 guy with iron armor and I usually find uncommon items or places while I explore so it gives me bargaining power in trades, especially if I have time to build a good reputation.
But raiding definitely has it's perks like bankrupting competitors and monopolizing parts of a server.

A summary:
It's not necessarily that massive servers kill smaller ones, it's a double whammy of large servers sucking in players (like black holes) and the difficulty of creating a server from scratch.

I voted for Krystal.
She probably has the most realistic chances for a character that's never been in Smash. Think about it:
- Everyone knows Star Fox, and we have Fox and Falco, not to mention Wolf might come back.
- They own Star Fox, so they wouldn't need to go through a bunch of 3rd party negotiations.
- She's been a part of the Nintendo franchise for a while now.
- They can make her move set diverse, with plenty of material to look at. Her staff from Star Fox Adventures, the blaster from Star Fox Assault, plus her telepathy for a possibly interesting Neutral special, etc.
- Her shield could be a barrier from Star Fox Assault. That would be epic!
- She's a top contender on both the American and Japanese polls.
Maybe they do a double DLC release of both Wolf and Krystal? \o/

I tend to take most things seriously, I value quality and being serious is how I evaluate it, just how I am. I just don't see how people can get so discouraged so easily, when the game they're playing is highly flexible, second only to Garry's Mod.
It not like ideas matter, they're only just the start of everything people do.
As for the "frustration-induced headache," I didn't actually get one, but I was frustrated nevertheless. (I'm going crazy on this thread 0.o)

I actually want more utility than more weapons. For example, grappling hooks.

Wow guys, your posts are amazing xD but I must admit...
You're wrong!!! There are nothing wrong with lists! In fact, lists present information in such a way that readers can read, process, and comprehend the information that's in it more effectively!

It. is. INSANE. (In a good way)
That is all.
Seems legit.
