posted a message on Better Than Wolves Total Conversion!
BTW has always (well, since I read about it) intrigued me, but I've been a little reluctant to try it because I'm not sure if I'm a bad enough dude to save the president play this hardcore a style.

But I did recently try an experiment in vMC, fueled by a combination of curiousity about HCBeds and irritation with the dithering that was going on in an LP I was watching. I tried starting a world with the goal to get the most out of every Minecraft hour - spending the day mostly outside, staying up all night, and aiming for speed. The result was surprisingly fun - it spaces out the normal start-up activities in a different way, and encourages having multiple projects to work on.

So, next time I get the perserverence to do a major building project, I'm jumping in.

posted a message on Bring Back Potion Cauldrons
Sounds good. Maybe it should hold more than three potion's worth though - potion flasks seem pretty small compared to a cauldron, and a chest holds 27.

Acting as a super-splash-potion when broken sounds fun, especially if pushing the cauldron with a piston triggers it.

I like this idea. Maybe make them full of villager zombies, meandering aimlessly in and out of the houses.

posted a message on Wither Skeleton Stone Sword Rare Drop
I would rather see Wither Skeletons being a bit rarer but have the head drop more frequently. Or make it so you need to kill them in the correct way (like getting records from Creepers). Random rare drops just mean grinding.

As for the stone swords, they're pointless but not actually harmful - AFAIK, it's not like they appear instead of a head, they drop when a head wouldn't. Having some kind of purpose for them would be nice though - maybe allow grinding or smelting them to get a component for a wither potion.

posted a message on Don't villagers seem to defeat the purpose of MineCraft?
I somewhat feel the same way. I mean, villages are kinda cool, the villagers add another element to interact with ... BUT, I really liked the aesthetic of being alone, in a new land, never even knowing what was the true story behind it. Were you a survivor of a previous civilization? The first person to exist? A voyager from another land? It could be anything.

Turning structures off is an option, of course. But I'd really prefer some finer detail than all-or-nothing. For example, being able to have strongholds, dungeons, nether fortresses, and desert/jungle temples on without villages or mineshafts would be ideal.

posted a message on What's wrong with my base?
Actually, as someone who's been playing Minecraft for a while - don't use the wiki, or at least not more than you absolutely need to. Learning how everything works was a lot of fun, and you only get one chance to do it.

Some tips to get you started though:
    * You don't need to use F3 - light level is determined by how far you are away from a light source, so try some different patterns and find out how closely you need to put your torches.
    * Water behaves rather oddly in Minecraft - get a bucket and do some experimenting. With practice, you can make ornamental fountains, conveyer belts for your farms, and small pools that provide an infinite supply of water.
    * Since you have a lot of stone, make a stone axe and sword. It should make harvesting trees a lot easier. Also, you can grow trees underground if you light it brightly enough.

No complaint about faster levels here - grinding does not equal skill. Now what I'd personally like is some more actual stages of advancement, like seeking out new resources or building special structures, but just grinding - nope, don't miss it.

posted a message on Proposal: Eliminate mob grinders
The thing is - Minecraft combat is just not that amazing. It's just spamming LMB and moving around a bit, there's not a ton of skill or strategy involved. It's ok for what it is - a hazard you have to deal with, some entertainment during the night. But it's hardly some awesome thing to be put as the pinnacle of the game.

The awesome in combat mostly comes from when you go outside the box. In fact, that's why I support getting all drops (including XP) from any method of mob death. Because if I boot a creeper off a cliff 300-style, or shove a skeleton into a cactus field, or otherwise trick foes to their doom, that's better than normal sword-spamming, and deserves the full reward.

So IMO, while building a grinder may or may not be an engineering feat (some are, some aren't), it's at least as creative as running around swinging a sword a bunch of times.

posted a message on I am furious.
    Quote from Taiine

Why is everyone whining abnd moaning about this? NO ONE is forcing you to play SMP, it's OPTIONAL to let you invite your friends or whoever ino your world. They are joining the two for this reason.

Incorrect. They are modifying the game so that "single player" is actually a client running on a local one-person server. Now there are definitely benefits to doing it this way, such as only having a single code-base, and making it possible to switch a single-player game to multi-player mode. However, it does mean that you will get certain SMP issues, and there is no way to "opt out" of that.

When something has been a bug in SMP for many versions, and running the SSP as single-player SMP causes that exact same thing to happen, it's pretty unlikely that the bug is a momentary issue caused by snapshot-ness. Also, Mojang does not fix bugs in any kind of timely manner - they just don't. It takes them many versions, and I see no reason that would magically change overnight.

Now sure, these may or may not be "game breaking", but I see no reason I'd want to deal with bad collision detection, glitchy mob movement, or any of the other SMP irritations - for no actual benefit.

The only thing I actually think they'll fix between the snapshot and the release is the not being able to pause thing, because that's:
    1) Probably pretty straightforward.
    2) A deal-breaker for many people, where other things may just be annoyances.

posted a message on Launcher Pistons
    I'd go with two varieties:
Springy Piston (Piston + String): Launches a short distance, not enough to take much falling damage, if any.
Blast Piston (Piston + Gunpowder, maybe some Iron too): Launches a significant distance, as seen in the recent mod. Also breaks (non obsidian) blocks if it can't push them (like the original pistons).

posted a message on Tutorials vs. MinePedia and Youtube
Actually, I find the current method of using achievements as a tutorial rather odd. Especially with the prerequisite system it has, it means that not only are most of the "achievements" for stuff you do normally on the first day, but you might not even be able to get the higher end achievements you actually notice, like When Pigs Fly (because, for example, you don't make crappy wooden tools).

I'd rather see the tutorial stuff separated, so that the achievements can be for actual achievements.

posted a message on GameMode changer
Seems like a good idea. It would be useful for several things:
    * Easily set up the pre-conditions for various challenges.
    * Build a trap / obstacle in Creative mode, switch to survival to see how deadly it is.
    * Build an awesome structure in Survival mode, switch to Creative so that you can fly around and get screenshots from many angles.

As far as "but cheating" - apparently, some people haven't heard that mods like TMI exist. The only solution to cheating is something called self control.
