The recent archiving of the forums is very unfortunate. I have only recently created an account and have asked some questions, but it has been a home to me for many years. The minecraft forum has saved me an incredible amount of time from reading questions. For this reason, I am using my years of experience with web development to program a Minecraft Forum. I am currently more than half way done with this, and will continue to keep working on it. Feel free to ask me questions about this. I will keep you all updated as to my progress!

I wouldn't bother unless you understand personally identifiable information and the general data protection regulation. I still bet $50 this is the real reason they are closing the forums.

    .

I specifically want to mention I was mistaken on Steam not having a fantasy category. I briefly checked but clearly overlooked it. My bad.

I truly believe we are all saying the same thing here but coming at it from different sides of the coin (cube?). Does Minecraft have fantasy elements? Absolutely it does. Is Minecraft a fantasy game? It depends on your definition of a fantasy game.

Is Minecraft a fantasy game in my opinion? No.

My question to you is: Why do you think that survival, crafting and building are mutually exclusive to fantasy?

Do you know what else has survival, crafting and building? Skyrim. Skyrim is a fantasy game and has most features Minecraft does, including mining, enchanting, potion making, smelting, dragons, witches, etc. No one questions whether Skyrim is a fantasy game based on the fact that it has survival, crafting, building, mining, exploring and so on, so why do you feel like those elements make Minecraft non-fantasy? It's like C1ff said, I think you're confusing gameplay elements (genre) for setting/style. The way I see it, the game is a Survival game with some RPG elements. The setting is a Fantasy world. That makes it a Fantasy Survival game (with a sandbox mode).

Skyrim is an action rpg. Minecraft is survival / crafting. These are both actual genres of games. Fantasy is not a game genre, which is the original question.

According to your logic, all games fall into the "fantasy genre" because the definition of fantasy is the faculty or activity of imaging things, especially things that are impossible or improbable. Even Steam, one of the most widely used game distribution platforms, does not have a tag for fantasy (unless I over looked it, which is possible since their tags aren't alphabetical). The Minecraft wiki defines Minecraft as a sandbox / survival game. It is pretty clear Minecraft is NOT a fantasy game.

Vanilla minecraft is not a fantasy game imo... it is survival / crafting / building. Modded minecraft CAN be fantasy themed, but still isnt a fantasy game imo.

    ...Again not stabbing anyone...

    No offense was taken brother.

With regards to complex problems, trust me, I burn out on packs like Gregtech. I play for a few days learning and setting things up, then I put it away for a few days.

The java chunk loading bug and the win 10 bedrock spawning issues are pretty game breaking right now. We just decided to shelve minecraft completely until a fix update is released for java. Until they seriously change mob spawning in bedrock, the performance improvement doesn't make up for a boring game play without hostile mobs.

Its not that we don't have a lot of other games we can play...lol!

Not sure what problem you are referring to, but start using the FTB / Curse / Twitch launcher (whatever the heck they want to call it these days). I have never had single problem with modded minecraft.

I sometime disagree with the modded community internally not outward (until now) when it comes to what the players want, if you want tech and magic, that's great, but if you want that complexity or content then go for it (I love tech of course and tweaks to the game mostly but Magic has it's good points I just suck at them sometimes), but I find the base game adding something new/similar I might use or use once and normalise to mods is more my problem with playing mods sometimes. Like I'm glad we have hoppers, I'm glad we have the new Smoker and Blast Furnace, I'm glad we have a lot of things I'm familiar with that aren't 'too' out there but I can commonly use instead of installing a mod for it unless a mod specifically needs it sometimes. I enjoy both Vanilla and Mods but my creativity is average at best due to being a more 'progression' or gameplay focused player rather than a player that plays sandboxes, city builders, strategy or otherwise, they are good I just don't jump into them as much. So I make concepts for puzzle maps instead where the questions work for me and I make the rooms very colourful or towards the questions to hint to players. It's not much but I've found it works for me as a creator even if not as effective compared building a city I guess since I don't have the patience or ability to go for ideas like that but I think they are amazing builds still like everyone else, they are really something.

I have considered making a video on the features of each update of Minecraft and this thread has made me want to do that again rather than just 'considering' it.

It is amazing how 1 game can bring so many different people, with so many different preferred play styles, so much enjoyment. I am probably in the minority when it comes to preferred play style. I LOVE analyzing situations and building systems to improve complex problems, which is why Gregtech and Rekia's mods are some of my favorites... but they are also much hated by many, for the very same reason.

Neither. It is better off with the modded community.

Java all the way. With mods available, the game never becomes stale.

I voted other, but I could also have voted never, provisionally. As long as there is a modded community, MC will never go bad.

Depending on what you consider "good" and what you enjoy, I typically recommend any of Reika's packs since they require learning and forethought and (at least to me) provide a great sense of accomplishment once you figure them out.
