I'm back one last time before the contest end date of October 31st (today!).

If there are any of you out there that could spare a vote for me, I would be extremely grateful! Placing in the top 3 would net me a significant portion of my tuition for the Vancouver Film School.

All you need to do is head to the link below and vote for my contest entry to the right of the embedded video.

It's crunch time now, so please use a spare minute to head on over and place a vote for me, thanks!

    Also;

The golf ball's bounce was a little strange, but it was a damned good animation.

You've got potential, if nothing else. Voted.

It does look strange, doesn't it? That specific animation actually lasted almost twice as long as you see it in the spot, but it needed to be sped up in order to fit within the time constraints of a 30-second commercial.

Couple that with my decision of shooting at 24fps instead of 30 for that "film look", and you end up with less frames than are ideal in order to convey the right sense of motion. What can I say? I took an artistic license!

Again, please spare a minute or two for a vote if you can, thank you all very much!

Thanks to everyone that's voted for me so far! I appreciate all the kind words as well, it keeps my spirits up!

Remember, I believe you can vote once every 24 hours until the 31st, so please vote more than once if possible, and tell others you know about an awesome commercial that will help a future game designer realize his dream!

    Thanks again, everyone!

    Hello, everyone!

I am aspiring game designer (I intend to be a level designer and/or environmental artist), and plan to be attending school next October at the Vancouver Film School here in Canada. Tuition is very expensive, and I have some of it covered, however I still have a long ways to go until I have everything I need.

I recently heard about a contest being held by the makers of "Cheetah Power Surge", an energy drink that doesn't have any caffeine in it. Firstly, I want to make this very clear: I am not trying to advertise this product here.

However, the contest revolves around creating your own original, 30-second TV spot for the product. I spent 2 months on my entry, of which you can view below.

The prizes for having your commercial place in the top 1st, 2nd, and 3rd spots are $25,000, $15,000, and $10,000, respectively. The majority of the criteria for judging the commercials are based around their actual design and originality, however there are "votes" that can be placed on each commercial submitted, and count for 15% of the total "criteria". If I were to place in any of those three spots, the winnings would go straight to my tuition, getting me a few steps closer to the kind of education I need to have a career doing what I love.

If you want to see some of the things I have done with regards to level design, see my two videos for a project that aimed to recreate the look and feel of Resident Evil: Rebirth (originally for the Gamecube) in Valve's Left 4 Dead.

Those are just to show that I am serious about my education, and that I'm not asking for something purely for monetary gain.

I will be honest with you; I would like you to vote my commercial with 5 stars - however that's not what I'm asking you to do. I want you to view my entry and vote for a rating of which you think it deserves. The contest started a few months ago, though the voting end date is October 31st I believe, which only leaves a scant few days for me to accrue any votes at all.

If you could head to the link below and vote for my commercial I would be very grateful. Also note that votes can be submitted once a day, giving me a total of three votes per person until October 31st. Votes don't assure me a win, but they do get my entry noticed by the judges - and that's what counts.

*Note: if this is against any rules, and needs to be taken down; I understand. I just know that the Minecraft community enjoys gaming as much as I do, and I hope that same community would like to see a potential game designer realize his dream. Thanks for reading!

So, have any of you had ideas to make sure that the decent community we have now stays older?

    What are you, 8?

People will play what they want to play. A larger demographic does not a bad game make. If you only want to play with older people, join a server with an age restriction - or even start your own and impose the restriction yourself.

Or just go and play by yourself in singleplayer, as that's essentially what you're insinuating; the less people you deem unworthy (in this case, young people) playing the game, the better off you are. So, go play by yourself, as you seem to be your own perfect demographic.

Lanterns utilizing glass is universally a good idea methinks, as is requires surface gathering of sand in order to create a lantern; this prevents players from being able to spam infinite lanterns while still underground.

Which also makes it involve smelting, which is a needed part of making them. Along with the smooth stone

Precisely. A smeltable surface material (in this instance sand) would be perfect for lanterns.

    Quote from Kochu »
Actually, running out torches may make the game easier. Consider this:

    Monsters spawn per chunk
    Randomly across all levels
if there are no unlit caves underneath the chunk's surface, then much more mobs will appear there at night. More creepers to greet you at sunrise

with finite torches monsters will stay underground.

Don't forget that with the new update, more mobs will spawn below ground, and more light will be required to prevent them spawning at such depths - whereas less mobs will spawn on the surface, even with little light.

Iron is used for far too many things at the moment.

Since gold may potentially be used for alchemy in the future, I recommend adding a second or third ore that can be smelted with iron in order to create alloys. Alloys would yield more usable "pieces" per recipe; such as 3 iron bars plus 3 (new ore) bars = 9, or even 12 alloy bars.

Smooth stone instead of iron for lanterns in this case is also not a bad idea.

posted a message on Will redstone affect lanterns?
    Quote from zalmoxes »
I'm not sure this has been mentioned, but lanterns should be affected by redstone the same way doors are.
Lanterns should work just as well without redstone, but redstone should allow us to toggle them on and off. It would be really awesome to have the lights go on when you enter the room for example.

I also think the new clock should affect redstone like a pressure plate does. It turns on at nights, and turns off during the day. This would allow us to have better lighting in our homes and lighthouses as well as dynamic track switching.

Not a bad idea, without redstone they default to always on, but with redstone connections they would respond to I/O via plates, buttons, etc.

Whereas there is no indication of a choice with torches. Hence it is a more annoying/coercive change.

Oh no! We have to survive in survival!

But seriously: if you don't need big bad mobs, isn't creative what you should click on? Haven't I heard rumors of more/most survival blocks getting added to creative, or was that someone blowing hot air?

Notch plans to turn the current alpha client into it's own creative mode once he's ironed out most of the bugs in the survival portion of the game. Then players can select between survival (requiring crafting, fighting enemies, etc.) or playing with infinite health and blocks.

posted a message on So what's the likelihood..
"Obsolete" in this sense more likely means that it may not be able to generate and spawn all of the new features - a new map might be required. I doubt all current maps would cease to function once the update is live.

This seems pointless, people who want to spoil their own fun should be welcome to do so.

Pointless? Not so, as "Alpha Creative" (for lack of a better term) will be implemented in the future. I agree that for the moment editing tools aren't the most harmful thing in existence, but I do think increased hack security should be implemented sooner rather than later.

Want infinite (item) but can't hack? Play creative.
