All they have to do is write a client with a hack allowing them to open a chest (They could probably make it so they can specify the chest ID, or make it random) and they could steal without anyone knowing what happened. This is the reason why it would need to be fixed.

This almost definitely includes accessing chests which are far away. Though one could still do what the OP proposed, one could not hack into a chest.
