I see a way hackers could exploit this majorly.
All they have to do is write a client with a hack allowing them to open a chest (They could probably make it so they can specify the chest ID, or make it random) and they could steal without anyone knowing what happened. This is the reason why it would need to be fixed.

I just finished implementing tile mining and movement verification. It’s now impossible to claim to mine a tile you can’t mine, or to mine a tile too fast, and it’s also impossible to move through walls.

This almost definitely includes accessing chests which are far away. Though one could still do what the OP proposed, one could not hack into a chest.

I see all of you are discussing the fact that Redstone dust, when in an infinite map, will stop working at a distance, but you are all discounting the fact that multiplayer will only have limited maps, as announced by Notch.

Steampunk is mechanical/steam power - not electric, not coal power.

Do you even know what steam power is? It's done by burning coal (Or using some other powerful heat source), which boils water, creating steam to move mechanisms.

Here's the Wikipedia article if you don't believe me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_power

How about NOT screaming abuse at the first criticism?

Hello, my name is Dorsidwarf, and I enjoy being a big fat penis and getting trolled so easily that it makes me look dumb. I also enjoy a fit of rage at everything I do not agree with and like to use CAPS LOCK to scream at people and hope they don't get mad.

Two things: One, dorsidwarf is right. Two, that paragraph there is very infantile. He didn't use caps lock, considering three letters are capitalized. And how is he the one who is trolled easily? You're the one responding with a nice full paragraph of silly insults that don't even apply.

Dwarf Fortress is a 2d text only inspiration for Minecraft. It's been around awhile though I've never played it. I want a shroom farm, and bioluminescent fungi wouldn't bother me neither.

A little off topic, but Minecraft was not inspired by Dwarven Fortess. Infiniminer is Minecraft's inspiration. Sure, some people probably have made suggestions when inspired by Dwarven Fortress, but Notch was not inspired to create Minecraft by Dwarven Fortress.

On-Topic: This does seem to be an elegantly simple method of mushroom growing. I would personally be happy if it were implemented.

I bet if he hired at least 5 extra hands, we might be in beta by next month XD

We are going into beta when SMP is done. His progress and goals suggest that he will have it done by the end of next week, to me at least. Many have their own opinion, however.

Precisely, thank you for clearing that up.

If sand can fall that nicely down, then why can't islands move smoothy sideways?

Because the sand is turned into an entity, and then turned back into a normal block. If one were to convert an island to a huge number of entities, the game would slow down and it would be more expensive to detect collisions between the player and the island.

Java would choke on this, as it has memory limits. It'd have to be C# or (more likely) C++, although I'd prefer C# since it would be easier to port to other platforms.

That is an odd statement, as the textures and geometry of the scenes are stored in high performance video memory. All that is stored in your RAM is a reference to the texture, which is a tiny 4 byte integer.

In short: This would not change the amount of RAM Minecraft uses.

Why doesn't lava melt the bucket.

For the same reason that you can punch down trees and carry 1^3 meter blocks of pure stone.

    1^3 is 1 x 1 x 1 or just 1.

    Maybe you meant 10^3?

I believe he meant one cubic meter, or 1 m^3.

Doesn't Vista idle at over 512MB RAM?

The lowest RAM Vista takes on my computer is ~700 MB, and it usually stays at around one gigabyte. (In other words, it takes about half my RAM on average.)
