posted a message on How do i increase map size?
If you size the map over the maximum size able to be processed by the client you will get a crash. I believe the quick reference for max sizes is 1024x1024x64, 512x512x256, 256x256x256. I think you can go over those slightly, but not by much.

If you're using tortoisesvn, just tell it to retrieve revision 5 instead of the header revision.

EDIT: Question also, where is the offline map converter?

Need to install Microsoft Visual Studio C++ Express, (I use 2008) restart, and try the build again.

Again, I hate, hate, hate when people can't figure things out for themselves. But I really am at a loss. :[

Got this problem too, it's because there's a dependency for Twisted Python, zope. You can download it here, but you need to get the 3.3.0 package and build it like it says with the build then install commands.

If someone knows how to get a easy-to-parse DF format, I (or any other programmer) can finish up the rest.

Might want to try some of the other map visualizers listed on the wiki, like stonesense.

The bot doesn't do anything when I run it.

I think because it wasn't ready yet. For me it was loading, unzipping, and unloading the blocks for a good long while. I wasn't sure if it was done after a half hour of loading, so I just closed it.

Just make map area generation an op-only ability or toggle. Bam, problem solved.
Regular users could reach the end of a map, but if your op is nice enough he'll turn on map generation and you can walk until he asks you to stop and toggles it off again. Or, op sees that map is getting crowded, so he walks over to the edge of a map to generate more.

If he adds more gems, perhaps instead of an ore block for each gem he could combine them all and have a gem ore block that gives 1-3 of a random type. That would cut down on the number of blocks to use just for gem resources.

posted a message on Notch: I have a potentially game breaking idea.. Do? Not do?
The only valid point at this junction is that it will take longer to make multiplayer. I will gladly wait another year if need be to have such an awesome feature for an already genre-breaking game.

If anyone thinks otherwise, I can respect that, but also respectfully disagree.

But this is turning into a description of Dwarf Fortress.

I just want to say, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this idea. It might not be Minecraft now, but it could be Minecraft then.

But really, that's the realm of scripting. Dungeon mode, if you will. If Notch eventually does make include Lua scripting (or his own blend), and allow for NPC interaction, then all that can be taken care of in a Dorf mod.

Nice map, I want it. To do non-square maps, you have to use OMEN to make it square by adding empty space.

posted a message on Notch: I have a potentially game breaking idea.. Do? Not do?
It may just be that I have selective vision, but it seems like the major concern is people spreading out on multiplayer. (There are a few complaints of how useless the whole idea would be in singleplayer, but I believe most of us can agree that that is a non-issue as Notch has just said it will be optional. Development time to multiplayer implementation as well, but coming from Cortex Command where we have a new version every 6 months if we're lucky this seems like grasping at straws.)
That can be remedied in many different ways, both by Notch and by a server owner themselves. The idea of a land claim flag can be extended to include map area generation. Include in op commands a /flag command, which replaces a normal land claim flag with a map extension flag, which would allow players to move beyond the initial area into the next map square generated. The illusion of an infinite map would still hold true, as the game would still generate the areas beyond the movable volume, but players would still be limited in usable map space.
I again put forth the other option, where players must have an op cross the map boundary to generate a new section.
And as others have pointed out, the server owner can simply partition their server's drive where their server is stored so as to limit how large the map can grow. I would expect Notch would code a way for the server to fail gracefully when it could no longer allocate enough HDD space to store a new section, perhaps just not generate any more sections.

The magnitude of this proposition demands that it be undertaken. I don't believe there has ever been a point in gaming history where this has happened.
Minecraft as it could be: A fully plastic world, infinite in size and opportunities, and at the hands of the player(s) to tame and shape.

If you want to make sure your RAM doesn't tank, put your player limit to 4. Easy enough to fix.

But I don't think this will be an all-or-nothing deal. Notch will most certainly keep the fixed maps, and have the infinite maps as an option.

As well, he can later go in and restrict players to being within a certain area of each other. Perhaps the map will only extend when at least two players are nearing the same edge of the map, thus preventing lone players from "RAM griefing". Or, perhaps you'd need an op with your party before the map would expand, preventing groups of players from doing the same.

Entirely want. One of the strengths of a system like this is you could have multiple servers linked together, so that if one or two went down you would still be able to play. If one were so disposed, could put up a "that land is currently experiencing a spider invasion, passage is not safe" message when users tried to cross into servers that were down.
