Maybe your server running is blocking you from getting on another server. Make sure your security firewall is down, and/or go into task manager and set minecraft priority to high.
Sounds like a lot of work, but it will help you get more people, remember to update your posts on the lists, and if your on a forum check for a bump rule and see when your allowed to bump the post. Usually its around every 48 hours.
You can find many many tutorials on how to do it, you either need to get craftbukkit or the minecraft server software, and then find a tutorial on how to use it.
It is probably from the chunks of map being loaded each time, and the default spawn point is a source of it. The pistons, redstone, etc, are just little things that make it worse.
I think the lag issue is easily solved, you don't need help with it. ^.^
PST.. Also depends where the server is being hosted, to your location.
Well I don't really know what the model is for a Netgear Xfinity router, so I can't help you and look it up. You could try looking in the manual, or just google it and find someone who has the same problem with your model.
Psst... This is server administration support but I would think your problem is not with a server, its your router.

1) Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
2) Copy the file "hosts" to where ever you like, it's just temporary
3) Open the file with notepad and remove any line with Minecraft in it
4) Save and close the file and put it back in the etc folder and overwrite the old one
5) Have fun playing Minecraft again

Heres a good place to find help on how to set it up, it includes the craftbukkit run.bat code. http://wiki.bukkit.org/Setting_up_a_server
