When running a server there is no guide. Stuff happens, plugins break, players complain, greifers grief, trolls troll, errors occur. In the end it's all about how much you can do on your own. The best way to get the experience you want is to run a server.
As I said before, start by hosting one on your own machine with just a few friends. If you find that easy enough you and can get a hold of a setup that will allow more people then start up a full server and work from there.
You can not run a half decent server for very long while following a cookie-cutter recipe how to guide. If you ever find the resources to run a server of your own and decide that you want to let me know and I will think about helping you more then, but for now experiment on your own and ask questions as problems arise. Don't ask vague questions about how to run a server because there is no all encompassing answer.
I got it set up. I'm using BukkitCraft 1.5.1 R2 or whatever..
setup was easy.. How do I know if I am Admin.. like How servers have [Admin] [Owner] [Mod] etc
And is the Whitelist working if I have joined without adding myself to whitelist?
And is there a preferred tool to edit the property/yml files?
The only thing you really can do is the very thing you just said you don't want to do... Make a server on your own machine.
Make one, tinker with it, get a few buddies to mess around on it, maybe even have them attempt to bust it just so you can learn how to fix any problems people might cause. That's the only good advice I can give you.

I'm starting college on the 20th and I'll be doing a bit of both Economics and Computer Science.. Just the basics right now but I intend to go towards Java development and network administration. The Finance path is irrelevant but I plan to double-major.

I've never really learned much as far as even Redstone goes, but I have been OP/Mod a few times before resigning because I lost interest in the game. (A mix of the 12-16 year old crowd taking over and the lack of traditional non-rpg servers)
But without paying for a server, how can I just "tinker" with things Admins do on a daily basis. Installing mods and keeping everything stable, setting up the mods, etc.. Maybe even some mod development.. This has always perked my interests more than just being a Mod.
Any Admin/Owner of an established server mind playing a "mentor" role for me? Any websites? I don't really fancy making a server on my PC as I only have a 256GB SSD and I'm a little OCD'ish on my file/space organization..

Vanilla Valley may be of interest to you. It's a semi-vanilla, with a few mods for security, antigrief, and lockette. We are fairly new with a lot of unexplored land! We are a mature server, 18+. We have a small economy to allow for fair trade, but anything sold is legitimately gathered, no creative even for admin. There are two owners, myself and Onionbro. We strive to make Vanilla Valley a great playing experience for everyone. We are not PVP, we are reliable and will not be closing, and there are always opportunities for everyone on the server. We have about 10-12 players on at peak hours (usually towards later part of the day).

I'm not looking for a new server either. Just an active server that's more towards a community than Free For All PVP watch your back 24/7.. I prefer 18+ but it doesn't matter as long as it's not a 23454325451351454 rules childproof server.
I already have a couple servers I'm interested in but I'm looking for one where I can actually find some space to build and farm and I have my own mines and all.
*Have you had any previous bans?: Once when I used to play a long time ago. I was a Mod and let a grifer off the hook and rebuilt the house he destroyed and gave the player back his items. The grifer reported me for giving items to another player. Long story short, I haven't played much since the 12-16 year old era came in.

Something organized as well. Tired of joining a server where the spawn is a maze you have to spend an hour getting out of before you can build. But not nothing sketchy either like just little hut in the middle of no where. Established cites would be nice but not required. I prefer a small but established server. Mature players who don't ignore you.

For spamming or something obnoxious, I mute them and/or kill them until they leave or stop. If it's something serious like hacking or greifing, I lay the banhammer down. You can have a In-Game-Name apart from your username and will cause no difficulties.
I mean with a password cracker, I could take your username and have your account within 24 hours. I feel like having a IGN would be better for security reasons. Since nobody can see what your login name is, they can't hack you.
