Yep, but also if Notch changed how chunks worked (made them 24-block cubes instead of 16*16*worldHeight), anyone could have height up to 65,536

I don't think we need to be making space elevators, but 512 or 1024 native support would be incredibly nice.

I think breeding in the wild should be rare and occasional.

But there should be some tool (love potion, cheesecake) that makes breeding en masse possible, if your farm can handle it.

Like chicken eggs? Most of the time upon breaking it does nothing, occasionally it makes a chicken, and rarely it makes a chickensplosion? Except with an occasional automatic-breaking/hatching if the local population is below #?

The more I think about it, the more I like the eggs idea. There just needs to be some automatic breaking/hatching. Sure cow-eggs are weird as heck, but this is Minecraft, and it only has a semblance of reality, its not a reality simulator.

the math is them adding new biomes into the set, the biome code has changed
it WILL NOT, CANNOT match up. OK, technically it is theoretically possible to add other factors on top of a procedural generation, but it greatly detracts from its elegant simplicity, and that means a LOT more coding, not just a little, a freaking buttload in comparison, you're not going to expect to use 1.4 maps on release, you should -not- expect to use old maps then either, and that's what we're coming up on.
if you were part of any other beta, say an rpg and they required character wipes every few patches (many do) then you don't complain, this is even less essential than that, you get to keep your world, and your character, you just lose a little aesthetic quality.

The point is that unless they take the effort to change it, every time they make an update to the engine (ie add a new biome type, or tweak an old one), even after the game is launched, it will continue to be backwards incompatible. Build it right the first time, so that when things are added to the game, you don't have to assume everything that came before is instantly rendered useless.

What we have now is a sandbox game built like an etch-a-sketch. In order to experience something new, you are forced to abandon what is old. I can accept that the world I play with today will not be the one I play on a month after the game is launched. I do however find it discouraging that the world I play a day after launch will likely be rendered just as useless (things do not spawn or function properly because of its version) as the one I play today, because of this lack of backwards compatability being considered in the world generating.

posted a message on Terrain generator coastline adjustment suggestion
    Quote from Swingerzetta

    ...
For these coastlines, I propose a system where the generator checks surrounding blocks, or perhaps just a coastline Feature that does the same, and have it check the slope of the terrain heading towards the water, and the curvature of the land

for gently sloping areas, it should always render sand.
For mediumly sloping areas, it should be gravel when in a cove, and bare stone when creating a point.
for sharply sloping areas, it should always be stone, maybe with a tendency to make overhanging cliffs in coves.

Just a small thing, really. It's not vital, of course, but it would make beaches look more realistic, as far as my own observations can say, and I think it'd look nice, too.

I've always been bothered by the always sand or dirt edged waterways. In reality there's a lot more clay and gravel in level areas, as well as stony bottoms or edges in hills/mountains.

    Quote from Cybertronic

I hear the increased map height makes the NPC's noses bigger.

Less oxygen in the high altitude air, so they need a bigger intake.

Greater height limit could mean things like giant redwoods in pine forests, or mahogany wrapped with vines in tropicals.

And with the proposed volcano biome, how scary can it be if the volcano is only 100' tall? Don't we deserve rivers of lava. Just think of that volcano biome located in the middle of an ocean with a river of lava running down it's side making the island bigger.

    -couldn't- code it that way.

Sure they could. New chunks would have a % chance of being any biome type, but the proportion of each % could be weighted by what already exists adjacent to that position, and countered by the sum of that type within a given radius.

Given the above, an old map would have a border of chunks that have determined biome properties, and new chunks generated with a new version could be determined based partially on what is already there while still being random.

    It's math not magic.

How those two forces were balanced would basically determine the average size of a patch of a biome. In fact, that would shut up a lot of people complaining about not liking big biomes if it was made a slider on the world generation page. People could choose Pandemonium if they wanted a chaotic landscape, or monotony if they wanted vast mountain ranges, forests and oceans.

The borders aren't properly smoothed for the swamps. Do we really need a 50th thread talking about what is obviously a bug. I wish this forum allowed downrating as well.

Exactly! This is why I was pissed off too, Notch is just reusing code, not adding anything new or unique. And the food is, I believe, wheat, from the screenshots we've seen.

While I don't mind the 'all animals come from eggs idea' for its amusing and whimsical qualities, I'd much prefer something more realistic, and that doesn't even require a bunch of new ideas.

There is obviously code for detection, monsters have the ability to pursue a target, and with recent changes to mushrooms we have population limiting. Just combine the two ideas and you get animals moving in small herds, which is exactly what they would do in reality. If you want to get fancy, you can only allow predator spawns when prey populations exceed a certain level, and cause predators to despawn (or die of hunger even) when prey are scarce.

With the eggs idea, it would be nice if eggs had some chance of auto-hatching.

So what you want is basically the wolf code ported over for other animals, and the item needed to "tame" them changed to wheat. Why doesn't anyone want anything unique, you all just want re-used old code.

That's the exact opposite of what I said. Congrats.

Each time the world generating code is changed, the old and new content of your map will have observable borders. It would be nice if things were backward compatible and had smoothed transitions, but they haven't bothered to code it that way.

    Quote from robert551

I haven't yet seen this information found yet, but if you eat a golden apple, not only does it restore your food bar, but it also causes your hearts to bob, and your health to increase faster.

I wish we could get ******* regular red apples from trees. I've seen some SMP servers with mods that let them drop at a low % from trees, and honestly I miss it in my solo worlds. They're hardly an optimal food source, but it makes use of a game entity that Notch has neglected for ages.

posted a message on Is Minecraft becoming a joke?
I'd like a bit more realism in some things, but honestly ... yes, I think Minecraft is a joke. Let's consider some things:
    • Almost everything in the world is made up of 1m blocks, even the people.
    • Rocks (and most things in the world) float in the air like gravity doesn't exist.
    • At night, or in the dark, the world is suddenly populated by camoflage genital shaped monsters that explode.
    • In the beginning of the game, you harvest lumber by punching trees down like Chuck Norris.
    • You can carry a bucket of lava around with your bare hands.
I could go on and on, but honestly, the game is pretty silly, and that is part of what makes it amusing and fun.

By the way, here's a link to cocoavalley's "Baby Animals" mod: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/190053-173-baby-animals-v175-mobml/

Jeb does in fact have the source code and models for this, so Mojang could use that to speed things along. I'm not sure why Notch seems to be implementing breeding from scratch – it seems he just doesn't like some aspects of this mod? I know he and Jeb were disagreeing earlier about just how to go about adding it.

    Edit:

"You know what would be fun? If every single animal in minecraft came from eggs. Breeding would involve moving egg blocks around." - Notch: http://twitter.com/#!/notch/status/117870458904387585

    Err...what?

I'd honestly prefer cows/pigs/sheep from eggs than being forced to feed them wheat (ala bones for wolves). At least the egg idea is funny. We'd probably find creeper eggs in the wilderness too.

I'd like to have a catch-pole for wrangling grown animals though.

    *edit*
I just hope they're different kinds of eggs that we can tell apart, and not a random surprise from the little tan ones we already have.
