Even if you like or dislike Mooshrooms, are they not the first biome unique mob*?
In fact, NPC's as well are the first "area" unique mob.
Squid beat them to it.
Imagine the desert mobs, mountain mobs, swamp mobs, snow mobs, etc.
Could they now be a real possibility? *They spawn only in their own biome, nowhere else.
I do like the possibilities for the future of flora and fauna in the game though. Crocodiles in swamps, bears in cold forests, lions on the plains.
It'd be even cooler if the whole system was redone to make the height generate as needed as you go higher, the same way it generates on the horizon as you move across the landscape.
My understanding is that at present it generates from 0 to 128 of the entire block you're on and all those you can see/are in range.
It'd be neat if each 0-128 part of the chunk was split into 4 0-32 height blocks and only generated the ones in view and according to your render distance, similar to what's been done for the actual visual rendering.
...
There still needs to be a sea level and a limiting factor on how high the terrain itself will generate within. The mountains need caps, and so do the ocean floors. Having a base for bedrock or a pool of lava with infinite depth would still need to set. That's a great deal more variables to introduce than simply allowing the Y limit to stretch under the current code.
I still hope he really decides to go with eggs. That way I can set up a farm by my base and not have to worry about how I'm going to get animals there from far away.
That's one of the big reasons I like eggs as well, being able to transport animals where they would otherwise not be - such as a tiny island in the middle of an ocean, the middle of a huge desert, a city under the sea or deep under the earth.
You're a hardcore pvp'er... in minecraft? You mean you've actually been spending a good proportion of your playing time fighting people? ... in minecraft? I think multiplayer is way to glitchy for any decent pvp combat, let alone the fact that it doesn't really go beyond moving a lot and hitting fast. But hey, if you like it, who am I to judge, i guess? :tongue.gif: srsly... in minecraft?
I kept thinking the same thing. Minecraft is a pretty terrible format for most types of PvP, and the game has never been designed with PvP as a primary influence afaik.
Considering that people drop/lose their XP when they die, I don't see it becoming much of an issue either.
There are already several mods out that increase or decrease world height/depth as you wish. There's at least one out for 1.9 pre-release right now.
It shouldn't be necessary to use a mod. The addition of a slider for height limit in the world generation menu under "More World Options" along side the seed entry pane would add more customization to each players game experience.
As for those of you telling people with low end computers to just get a new computer, that's a silly argument. Not everyone can afford or is willing to pay for a new computer. Life would be so much easier if the solution to everything was to get rich.
Which is why it would be a non default option.
The game code can do it, there is obviously a fair deal of demand for such an option, why continue to force people to use mods? One of the great features of Minecraft is the nigh infinite expanse of the world - sadly that world is also nearly two dimensional.
Really tho if I was anywhere where repairing tools was going to be beneficial I would likley have a workplace set up somewhere nearby that included a workbench, multiple chests and a forge.
I tend to have a central location with all my chests and other resources, my mines might extend half a kilometer out from there. Each time I get a pair of used items I'd like to repair into a full refurbished one, I don't want to have to walk/ride back to my base. I wouldn't want half a dozen of these forges set up all over my mines either. Mashing them together in the 2x2 inventory grid seems fine.
Minecraft has never seemed like it was supposed to have a desperately rare resource system in which I need to feel the pressure to go out of my way to save every scrap of mineral.
Using a repair table would be a much better idea. You should have to return to your workshop to repair items, it doesn't make sense to be able to 'combine' two swords while wandering around somewhere.
Plus it would add another cool item to be able to put in workshops/storage rooms. Call it either a repair table, similar looking to the crafting table, or maybe make it an anvil.
That's exactly the sort of thing Notch wants to avoid - making people carry around an inventory loaded with broken or partially used tools. I'd agree with him, that sounds like the opposite of fun to me.
Yeah that's how genetics work, but applying black ink to a sheep doesn't actually change their DNA :tongue.gif:
They could very well just do it anyway in Minecraft but then there wouldn't be much point in finding dyes at all.
More importantly, why do all the cows or pigs or chickens have to look like clones. They deserve some color variation too. Sheep shouldn't be the only ones showing off their fancy colors.
If color won't tell the animals apart, maybe the cow eggs should have little horns, sheep eggs wittle wool snuggies, and pig eggs have spiral tails to tell them apart instead of color (maybe add red waddles to the chicken eggs for good measure).
Notch edited the code to make the limit easily changeable. There are mods that make the limit 256 and 512. I can't believe you never heard?
Native support for the feature would be preferable to a mod. The game can generate a horizontal world larger than an Earthlike planet, but elevation is limited to a 128m range. That means the mountains and ocean/cave/canyon depths are practically two dimensional. Modders have shown that the code can handle an order of magnitude greater Y variation, why not support it as a feature with a slider in the world generation menu (the default can be 128, but if you're willing to wait or your machine can handle it, why not offer the option for more).
He's going to implement alternate limits soon.
When, and in what context, did they make that statement.
In my current SMP world (1.9 pre), we have eagerly been looking for snow biomes. No luck so far, despite some wide-ranging expeditions.
I'd suggest, to cut down on exploration time, copy down your seed# from the F3 screen, make a new world in creative mode, and fly around in a big spiral (with a map on your toolbar to help navigate).
I know that was likely satire but it seems like there are some out there that actually think that is what notch is going to do..... We aren't going to get an animated birds and bees edition of animal husbandry in Minecraft. At most we are going to get animated hearts.
Yes, I expect it will be very valentines day cartoonish, a burst of little hearts followed by a new critter magically poofing into existance. I'd rather have eggs, with a chance of new animal instead of egg.

Nope.

Of course, they'll need new eggs for that:

Go eggs!

Actually, it probably will ...

I'm crossing my fingers that the baby animals will come out of the eggs. It would be silly if fully grown animals came out of eggs :tongue.gif:

Then don't turn the option up, or in the OPs design don't build above 127 - nothing would change for you.

The Mushroom and Swamp biomes are mangled together in a peculiar way on that seed, I like it.

Are you looking for a seed with a known Mushroom biome? Here are some:
