02/11/2012: At long last, all of the mods are updated for Minecraft 1.1.0. My last update for 1.0.0 had a ton of bugs but I think I managed to find them all thanks to your help and fixed them. What else is new? HLights has a new item, the Halogen Torch. HTorches are made with HLights and are just like torches except brighter, more resistant to explosions, and will not be swept away by water. Also, there are now SMP versions of HLights, Rways, CastleGates, and Garages included with the SSP downloads. Here's a picture of HTorches in action:

01/06/2012: We are now finally updated for Minecraft 1.0.0. See the changelog for details on the minor changes that were made. Here's a picture of the new textures for Rways:

11/12/2011: So I've been really hosed for free time lately, which is why I haven't read the thread in weeks or answered any PMs, but I did add a new video to the OP today and I finally made modpacks. You can now download all of my mods at once instead of the lame old fashioned way. The UltraPack features all of my mods while the ModernPack only focuses on the modern ones, so it doesn't include Castle Gates. As always, please read the instructions before complaining to the thread and especially before PMing me. I don't reply to people who present a problem they would not have had if they actually read the README.
10/24/2011: All right. That took way longer than I thought it would. I'm still working on Minecraft Forge support. You no longer need Flan's Vehicles or TurboModelThingy. HeavyVehicles 1.8.1v2 is now out. New features include these guys:

10/11/2011: I'm pretty sure everything is ready for 1.8.1 and good to go, so I'm going to post the downloads now and write the descriptions later when I have less homework. Worried about recipes? Fear not! I have made a handy recipe guide that shows a picture of every recipe my mods add. You can get it here: Recipe Guide
See the Changelog to learn about my new mods and changes to existing ones.
10/04/2011: I've been hard at work the last few days trying to get HeavyVehicles finished. A release date of next weekend seems likely. I've added the HMMWV Scout, the K128 Autominer, and the P150 Rway Paver. I've also fixed the steering problems the treaded vehicles were having. So far, it's pretty cool. The K128 digs 3x3 tunnels and automatically places HLights if you keep it supplied with them. The P150 paves 3-block wide Rways if you keep it supplied with Asphalt. Expect the new version of Rways to make my vehicles go faster and actually be controllable. Here is a picture of my progress so far:

10/02/2011: Wow, it's been a really long time since I've been on here, but rest assured. I was not completely cathartic over the last few months (though I was pretty close). I know people are looking forward to 1.8 updates, and they will happen eventually, after I finish my new project. However, I only have time to work on this project on the weekends since school is getting really intense again. "What is this new project?" you ask. See for yourself:

7/10/2011: I finally replaced the motherboard in my PC and was ready to mod again. Unfortunately, I discovered the amazingness of Mass Effect 1 & 2 shortly afterward, further prolonging any update. Now that I have finished them both, I'll be back on my PC modding away. First up, it looks like making Garages and CastleGates multiplayer is more difficult than I thought but I have tested Rways in SMP without much trouble. I will keep experimenting with making them SMP. Also, I seem to be captivated by the idea of making a helicopter mod. I don't know if I have the skills for it to amount to anything though. Enjoy all the mods for 1.7.3 for now.
6/6/2011: Bugs fixed in Rways. Download the new version, see changelog. Added Metalworks, but I haven't written the Mod Description for it yet. Feel free to download it early if you want. I'll write the description after I play it myself and take some screenshots.
6/1/2011: All mods version 1.6.6v1 released. See changelog for new features.
4/29/2011: All mods version 1.5_01v1 released.
4/17/2011: All mods version 1.4_01v1 released.
Mod Descriptions
HLights
Description coming soon.
Basically, HLights are their own mod now instead of being part of Rways. I had many, many requests for this for some reason. That said, HLights is a required mod if you want to use Rways. I was going to put it in the Rways download as well, but I thought that would make people too confused. Also here is a picture of some HTorches (different from HLights, see the Rways spoiler if you want pictures of HLights).

Rways
Have you ever wanted to build an interstate highway but found stone and cobble too slow? Have you ever gleefully installed the Planes mod and then set out to build a runway out of wool? Have you ever wished that torches could be put on ceilings? Are you wondering how that last question is related to the first two?
Ladies and gentlemen, I'm pleased to introduce Rways! Rways is a mod that brings the concept of modern road construction to Minecraft. Say goodbye to cobblestone roads and runways made of wool and "Hello!" to superior paved Rways. Why Rways, you ask? Rways can be either Roadways or Runways, so I decided to give each one the same recognition in the name. Plus, it's shorter. Rways can be painted with all kinds of markings using a Paint Roller. They also let you, your vehicle, or your plane move much faster than on an unimproved surface. The mod additionally adds halogen lights, high-powered devices brighter than torches that can be placed on walls, ceilings, floors, and even integrated into Rway segments.
If you've read this far, you must be interested, so let's start covering the details:
To build an Rway, you will need asphalt, which comes from tar. Craft some tarballs using a bucket of water filled with gravel and coal.

Tarballs can then be refined in the furnace to produce asphalt.

It's time to put that asphalt to use. Apply it to some stone and you have a fantastic, structurally sound Rway segment. Combine many of these for incredible feats of engineering such as massive airport runways, city streets, and even elevated highways. Also, as of Rways 1.6.6v2, asphalt can now be held as an item and directly applied to stone blocks to turn them into Rways without having to craft them.

As great as they are, Rways could get kind of boring without any markings. Craft a paint roller using some wool, sticks, and white paint (okay, bone meal, same thing). With a paint roller equipped, you can use it on an Rway segment by right-clicking to cycle forward through available patterns and left-clicking to go backwards. Don't have a two button mouse? Maybe it's time you left the '90s.

There are some times where torches just won't cut it. After all, what self-respecting modern builder would place dozens of fire hazards all over their walls? Not you, my friends. You have halogen lights, which through your incredible genius, can be crafted with nothing more than a piece of glass and some of that freakish red stone that grows underground. They can be placed anywhere that torches can and more, including on ceilings and underwater. [Disclaimer]

You, my friends, are more sophisticated than simple, ionized lighting. How about embedded lights for Rways that can be turned on and off by clicking or using redstone circuitry? Construction is simple. Place a halogen light in an Rway section to make sure you can always see your landing zone from far away and up above.

Not yet convinced? Sample some of these tasteful but quickly thrown together screenshots of what Rways has to offer:
The available painting options include a plethora of stripes, as well as some solid colors.

A simple intersection for a world where people are very careful and unlikely to trip on a half-block high curb.

A modern office building mysteriously devoid of furnishings but with no shortage of excellent lighting.

Say, that runway looks a little familiar...

New in 1.8.1v1, Manholes! They can be opened and closed to keep you in and out. There's also an Aluminum Ladder down there. Neato! 1.8.1v1 also adds Swalks (or sidewalks if you're lame), which increase the player's movement speed. By the way, Rways don't increase the player's movement speed anymore, they do it for HeavyVehicles.

Garages
It is inevitable that vehicles will one day roam the world of Minecraft. Already today, we have jamioflan's Planes and SDK's ATV. Vehicles, while still in their adolescence, are becoming an essential tool for many players. Now is the time to safeguard your iron-hungry investments. Now is the time to prepare for the future of Minecraft. Ladies and gentlemen, now is the time for Garages!
Garages can most simply be described as a new kind of door. An amazing door. They keep the scary monsters and spiders outside but let sunlight in. They can be opened by right-clicking and placed on the bottom of a ceiling to provide a strong, but flexible barrier to keep your vehicles safe from the perils of the night. Garages are synchronized. Opening one garage block will open the whole garage. They are even variable in height, ranging from the dingy crevice that can hold no more than a Smart Car to incredibly massive, gigantonormous aircraft hangar doors. Ladies and gentlemen, garages are the future of vehicular security.
In order to build a garage, you must first craft some garage panels out of iron and glass.

Three of these panels can be combined to form a garage block. A single garage block is placed on the bottom side of a regular block and is one block wide. It must have at least 3 blocks of clearance (essentially a minimum height of three) and has no maximum height. (I'll showcase the work of whoever can send me a screenshot of a 120+ block tall garage.)

Many of you who rushed off to build a massive garage must now be wondering how to close it now that you have opened it and you are too short to reach the top to close it again. It is now time for another fantastic electronic contraption. I present, the Garage Remote! Using this simple device crafted from some iron, redstone, and a button, you can remotely open any garage that is directly in front of you from a maximum range of 32 blocks. Whoooooa! It's time to change your pants. I bet it can even do cool things such as open your garage if you use it while driving your vehicle up to it (Disclaimer: I haven't actually tested vehicular garage activation, but I have no reason to believe it doesn't work.)

Once again, here are some screenshots to satiate the more skeptical/easily amused.
A large 6x5 garage.

The same garage opened via a remote control.

A smaller 4x3 garage.

Castle Gates
Quote fromDear Modder
i am truly impressed by the garage door mod, if you could alter the look a bit to resemble fence posts stacked up, then you will have created the one mod i have been looking for, a castle gate mod, please tell me you can do this one too?
Here ye, good tidings to thee! Art garages condemned by thou as some possessed evil trifle of the Moderne Times? Harken back to ye days of olde, when mighty castles commanded thy lands. No more shall thy horses be threatened by dangers outside yon castle, for ye, Wenches and Men, have Castle Gates.
[Translation]
Gate Gratings can be crafted from iron.

Three gratings can be combined to form a Castle Gate block. Unlike garages, these only have a minimum height of 2, so you can make person high gates. They behave exactly like garages do.

Of course, they did not have remote controls in Medieval times. Now you can craft a golden trumpet and use it to have your incredible, invisible herald with super-fast reaction time to open your gate. Once again, you must be looking directly at the gate from a range of less than 32 blocks.

Here are some quick screenshots I took.
A 5x4 gate. As you can see, I am using 1x2 gates as medieval-style windows.

The same gate opened by using the trumpet.

Metalworks
Better description coming soon.
Here are some things you can do:
*Mine Bauxite Ore and smelt it into Aluminum Ingots.
*Combine Iron Ingots with Coal Dust (made from a piece of coal) and smelt them into Steel Ingots.
*Mine Black Gold and refine it into Crude Oil or build an Oil Derrick on top of Black Gold to harvest Crude Oil.
*Refine Crude Oil into Fuel
*Build cool things out of steel and aluminum such as steel tools, an aluminum ladder, soda cans, and a modern furnace that smelts things twice as fast but only runs on Fuel.
Some more tips:
*Oily chunks must be placed in Aluminum Cannisters before they can be refined into Crude Oil.
*The Refinery and Oil Derrick do not need fuel, they only need oil to refine or a steady supply of aluminum cannisters, respectively.
*Oil Derricks can only be placed on top of Steel Pipes. Steel Pipes can only be placed on top of Black Gold or other Steel Pipes. Protip: Don't destroy all your Black Gold if you want to have oil farms!
*Metalworks should not conflict with any other mods. I narrowly avoided modifying any Notch code.
*Steel tools are exactly the same as Iron tools, except that they last as long as Diamond tools. They are made with Steel Ingots and Steel Shafts.
*Metalworks is designed to be a prerequisite for later mods of mine to come: ModernTech, ModernWar, and another mod that I am not going to say anything about because I don't want to deal with people freaking out.
Here are some pictures:
Examples of proper ways to set up Oil Derricks.

ModernTech
Better description coming soon.
ModernTech adds more contemporary building materials to the game, for those of us who want to build modern cities and military bases, but are hampered by Minecraft's medieval feel. New blocks include:
Reinforced Concrete, which is much stronger than stone and looks cooler
Modern Tile, made by burning clay blocks in a Modern Furnace, look cool, may have more colors in the future
Water Fountain, shoots up a stream of water unreliably when right clicked, still working on this
Camo Plate, a pressure plate that matches the texture of the block under it, waaaay cool, doesn't work for all blocks, notably grass, too complicated
Two kinds of Aluminum Siding, Horizontal and Vertical, can be painted white, red, green, or blue
Chain Link Fences, they behave the same way as glass panes and iron bars, but are chain link fences!
New doors: Chain Link Gate, Steel Door, and Glass Door
The paint roller from Rways can now be colored with white, red, green, or blue dye to be used to paint siding.
The colored paint rollers can be turned back into regular paint rollers by right clicking them on a water block. Otherwise, the only way to drain them would be to paint a whole bunch of siding. They also turn back into regular paint rollers if they run out of paint.
Clay can be collected by placing dirt in a Refinery.
Tempered Glass, a harder and pickupable version of glass can be made by smelting glass in a Modern Furnace.
Picture time!
A chain link fence and water fountain in front of my house.

A crude gas station made with some gas pumps, reinforced concrete, and tempered glass.

Four Camo Plates, can you spot the one that is not hidden? (I intentionally had them use the portal texture for when they can't camouflage because it looks cool.)

All of the colors and types of Aluminum siding along with some Modern Tiles.

HeavyVehicles
Better description coming soon.
Right now, it adds four new vehicles: The HMMWV Scout, K128 Autominer, the P150 Rway Paver, and the H7 Freight Hauler. The HMMWV is a fast scouting vehicle that can carry a lot of cargo and let you explore your world. The Autominer, when fed with a supply of HLights, can drill 3x3 tunnels when the drill is turned on and automatically place HLights every 8 blocks or so. You can also drill tunnels without giving it HLights, but it will get dark for you very fast. The Rway Paver does exactly what it says; if you supply it with Asphalt and turn on the paver, it will pave all blocks under it into a 3 block wide Rway. Note that this can be used to make bridges if you drive off a cliff with the paver on (somewhat of a leap of faith). The Freight Hauler is a large cargo truck that can carry twice as much stuff as a HMMWV. It's a bit slower, but very hand when you are transporting all of your belongings between bases.
Additionally, this mod adds some new blocks and items. Spare Parts can be crafted out of various vehicle materials and fed to the vehicle to replenish its health. Additionally HLights and Asphalt can be fed to the Autominer and Paver respectively to replenish their ammo. Fuel can be replenished by feeding Fuel (from Metalworks) to the vehicles. If you really want to be established, try building a gas station by placing a Fuel Tank underground, then running pipes up to a Gasoline Pump. If you right click on a gas pump and are next to one of your vehicles, the vehicle will begin to refuel for about a minute. It will not be driveable until it is refueled.
Finally, here are some differences between my vehicles and Flan's.
-I tried to improve the handling of the vehicles to make them feel less like boats, you can be the judge of how successful I was.
-Vehicles have health, ammo, and fuel meters that can be displayed in a GUI by pressing the inventory key (Default: R).
-If the health of a vehicle reaches less than 10%, it will start burning and you have about 10 seconds to RUN AWAY before it explodes and leaves a neat crater full of vehicle parts that you will need to put back together.
-I've added more robust sound effects that I took from Battlefield 2.
-I've also made it so vehicles can climb hills much, much easier than they can in Flan's mod.
-Vehicles will pitch and roll if you accelerate rapidly or make tight turns.
-Vehicles can destroy leaves in their path, which makes it much easier to drive through forests.
-They can also break through glass if they are going fast enough.
-If you hit a mob with a vehicle, they will be sent flying off with a velocity much higher than that of the vehicle. Note that this damages the vehicle slightly.
-Some vehicles have an ability (such as drilling or paving) that must be activated by pressing the Special key (Default: F).
-Each vehicle has a built in garage door remote. You can open Garages by looking at them while in a vehicle and pressing the Garage key. (Default: G)
Now for some pictures:

All three vehicles that are currently in the mod, a moving van and maybe a sportscar will come later.

Changelog
MC1.1.0v1: Updated all mods to Minecraft 1.1.0. Fixed a bug where the Metalworks machine GUIs were missing textures. Fixed a bug where the bottom of the gas station was missing a texture. Fixed a bug that caused the inventory icon for chain link fences to crash the game. Added HTorches to HLights. Posted SMP versions of HLights, Rways, Garages, and CastleGates.
MC1.0.0v1: Updated all mods to Minecraft 1.0.0. Some minor changes were made. Shift clicking in vehicle or machine inventories should no longer crash the game. In Metalworks, the recipe outputs for Steel Frames, Steel Pipes, and Aluminum cans have been doubled. Rways had a texture overhaul and an Rway section can now be painted in 15 different patterns instead of 9. All mods now use Minecraft Forge to eliminate the need for item and texture sprites. All mods can now be installed by dropping a zip file in the mods folder. Props files are now located in the config directory.
1.8.1v2: Added a new vehicle to HeavyVehicles, the H7 Freight Hauler. Changed the texture of the HMMWV to make the windows look more glassy. HeavyVehicles no longer requires Flan's Vehicles and TurboModelThingy. I have the Minecraft Forge API on my computer and am studying it for future deployment in my mods. Stay tuned.
1.8.1v1: FINALLY updated to 1.8.1. Two new mods added: ModernTech and HeavyVehicles. Additionally, Rways was split into two mods: HLights and Rways. The HLights are now separate and HLights is required for Rways. I finally fixed the screwy way Garages and CastleGates were rendered in 1.7.3. SWalks and RwayManholes were added to Rways, check them out. Metalworks has some more recipes now, see the Recipe Guide for details.
1.7.3v1: Finally updated for 1.7.3. No new features yet. Notch changed the way blocks render so now Garages and CastleGates look weird when they are open. Now I have to do work to fix it. Also fixed a couple of missing recipes in Metalworks.
1.6.6v2: Fixed bugs in Rways not allowing blocks to be placed on them and keeping paint from updating immediately. Changed default height of Rways back to 1.0. It can still be modified in the .props file.
1.6.6v1: Updated for Minecraft 1.6.6. Added adjustable SpeedMultiplier, MaxSpeed, and RwayHeight in mod_Rways.props file. Rway blocks are now recessed into the ground by default (RwayHeight=0.75). Garages and CastleGates can now be activated by redstone buttons, levers, pressure plates, etc. Added Metalworks initial release.
1.5_01v1: Updated for Minecraft 1.5_01.
1.4_01v1: Initial release.

Although I have a considerable amount of Java experience from all my classes here at MIT, I couldn't have figured this out without the following people:
The MCP Team, of course, for allowing anyone good at following instructions with some fair Java skills to become a modder.
jamioflan, for posting the source code for Planes and really getting me interested in modding.
Risugami, for making ModLoader, one of the coolest things ever done for Minecraft.
DJoslin and Choclatey Syrup. MIT students are very good at pattern-matching. Decompiling and studying the works of these two great modders allowed me to gain more insight into how to write good and functional code.
rphares, for the idea for CastleGates.

From what I understand, it's supposed to be released sometime Saturday. There was a bit of a discussion earlier with 303 on the IRC. Someone was arguing that because it was Saturday where they lived, it should be released already. 303 basically suggested that "your Saturday doesn't necessarily mean our Saturday."
Also this is speculation, but I hear they're waiting on one more component to be finished by one coder before release and it's one of the reasons for the delay.

I would support a txt or config file choice. Depending on the situation, roll controls might be better (e.g., dogfighting) and in others keyboard controls would be a better choice (e.g., sightseeing, leisure flying).

Anyway, fantastic mods, flan! I can't wait to see what you have in store next!
