Dec 10, 2011Drago posted a message on This Week's "Snapshot" ReleasedI like this snapshot update, and the mob eggs are a really nice addition. However, I feel that the "sheep eat grass to regain wool" is a bit overpowered. I'm not complaining, I use wool for carpeting a lot, but it seems kinda unrealistic for the sheep to regain their wool so easily. It might work better to have them eat the wheat grass to regain their wool, and only after a timer of like five minutes. Still, nice snapshot. :smile.gif:Posted in: News

Personally I think his maps are just about the same as the rest of them out there, he just did it first and caught the fame train as it was passing by.
The thing is, Gurd's entire post was worded in a very neutral and non-biased way. He's not trying to create rifts or bash Vechs, he just wants to explore the idea that Vechs' maps have something that others don't. I see nothing wrong with that.

So basically, the other game that I play the most alongside Minecraft, Warframe, received a major update about a week ago. I pretty much stopped all progress on DsD and played that for a week straight, working on my map intermittently when the servers were down.
However, I did make more progress on the Cyan wool area since my last dev update. The area is progressing nicely, and right now I'm working on the first of three major structures that will populate it. I haven't done a lot of work on the walls and overall atmosphere of the place, so there won't be any screenies I'm afraid. I'd put the area completion at about 25%.
Yeah, that's about all I have to say. However, I am feeling pretty burnt out with Warframe, having put roughly 30-40 hours in it over the past week, so a return to working on DsD is not at all unlikely.

Which one of these is not like the others...?

I knew there would be some confusion over the name. Dreadsky is my all-encompassing name for the world my maps take place in, and it's meant to be a place of constant change, with unseen beings coming in and out of existence to shape the world at their will. I have a lore book at the beginning of Depths, similar to the one at the beginning of Isles, explaining how and why this map takes place underground, as well as how people inhabited the caves.
As for your question, I really haven't ever felt like people make cave maps due to laziness. If that's their reason and the areas they use work in cave maps, then I'm fine with it. Really it's not my place to judge why someone chooses a certain approach to mapping.

To give some background, the Survival Games maps gained huge popularity directly following the release of the Hunger Games movie a few years ago. The first map tried to mirror the experiences a tribute would have fighting in the Hunger Games, but since then the map style has become more diverse, and more about knowing locations of chests and getting lucky with better loot. In the Hunger Games books/movie, the center of the arena is called the Cornucopia, due to the shape of the centerpiece (it does actually resemble the cornucopia you think of,) and that it is where all the supplies for the tributes are located. The Survival Games never really tried to make an actual Cornucopia, but instead kept the name as it fit the purpose.
Side-note: does anyone else wish the Survival Games hadn't got as mainstream as it did? :/ Not saying this in a jealousy way, more like it becoming as popular as it did ruined the effect it had at the beginning. I remember seeing videos popping up in my sub-box one day from a ton of youtubers, all about this Survival Games thing. I watched literally everyone's perspectives that I could, got caught up in the blow-by-blow of the whole thing, and cheered the people on who I wanted to win. Played some games by myself, got all shaky with excitement, actually built some unofficial maps with my friends that we played on actively, etc. Point is, it was a special thing back then, with some form of exclusivity, where you couldn't just hop onto a server and be guaranteed a spot. Now there are hundreds of servers offering Survival Games experiences and it's just all so dumbed down.
Rambling, I know. Warframe servers are still down.

So yeah, not sure how active I'm gonna be for a while, either posting here or working on my map. In all honesty, I'm only posting this now because the Warframe servers are down.
