Recently, people have been saying that Vechs' maps have a certain quality.

So, a post dedicated to that. First off,

    COMMUNITY QUESTION
Do you think Vechs' maps do really have an unparalleled quality? What is this quality?
    *snip*
Second, would anyone be interested in doing a test?
    *snip*
I'm actually very on board with this test idea. It seems like it would yield telling results. The methods would have to be refined a bit though; someone who hasn't played any CTM maps isn't necessarily going to know who Vechs is, and if they do know likely they will have played some of his maps at least.

Personally I think his maps are just about the same as the rest of them out there, he just did it first and caught the fame train as it was passing by. :P

Um can we not have questions like this? They really just create unnecessary rifts and general vechs bashing that doesn't need to be here. Also it tends to make a lot of people go "Oooh oooh! Notice my opinion because its more important than everyone else's" (not you lovely people reading this post, those other people. You're not as bad about this because you actually took the time to read this"

So yeah, my opinion ( :P ) is that we should not have these questions here
The thing is, Gurd's entire post was worded in a very neutral and non-biased way. He's not trying to create rifts or bash Vechs, he just wants to explore the idea that Vechs' maps have something that others don't. I see nothing wrong with that.

So how is the map going? It's been very quiet on the thread recently so....
I've been meaning to get a little dev update out there for a while now.

So basically, the other game that I play the most alongside Minecraft, Warframe, received a major update about a week ago. I pretty much stopped all progress on DsD and played that for a week straight, working on my map intermittently when the servers were down.

However, I did make more progress on the Cyan wool area since my last dev update. The area is progressing nicely, and right now I'm working on the first of three major structures that will populate it. I haven't done a lot of work on the walls and overall atmosphere of the place, so there won't be any screenies I'm afraid. I'd put the area completion at about 25%.

Yeah, that's about all I have to say. However, I am feeling pretty burnt out with Warframe, having put roughly 30-40 hours in it over the past week, so a return to working on DsD is not at all unlikely. :P

Can I have feedback about this ship please?
    *snip*
The proportions of the whole thing seem pretty wonky, if I'm entirely honest. It's mostly the back end that bothers me; definitely cut that down a few notches and give the captain a place to stand, instead of the little teensy platform you've got now. It looks like you've mostly gotten the shape of the underside right, as right as it can be when you've used an MCedit brush to create it. Also not a fan of any of the blocks you're using in any of their roles; reshuffle and try again.

    Community question:
What do you think about how certain mapmakers just make cave-esque themes in their maps simply because it's easier to create?

...Maps such as Dreadsky Depths (which I just sorta realized "Dreadsky Depths",srsly Drago?)
    Srsly what? :P

I knew there would be some confusion over the name. Dreadsky is my all-encompassing name for the world my maps take place in, and it's meant to be a place of constant change, with unseen beings coming in and out of existence to shape the world at their will. I have a lore book at the beginning of Depths, similar to the one at the beginning of Isles, explaining how and why this map takes place underground, as well as how people inhabited the caves.

As for your question, I really haven't ever felt like people make cave maps due to laziness. If that's their reason and the areas they use work in cave maps, then I'm fine with it. Really it's not my place to judge why someone chooses a certain approach to mapping. :P

One main thing which bothers me: why is the central spawn area called "Cornucopia"? I don't really see any resemblance to a horn that spews out of it food to this spawn.....
    Oooooh boy.

To give some background, the Survival Games maps gained huge popularity directly following the release of the Hunger Games movie a few years ago. The first map tried to mirror the experiences a tribute would have fighting in the Hunger Games, but since then the map style has become more diverse, and more about knowing locations of chests and getting lucky with better loot. In the Hunger Games books/movie, the center of the arena is called the Cornucopia, due to the shape of the centerpiece (it does actually resemble the cornucopia you think of,) and that it is where all the supplies for the tributes are located. The Survival Games never really tried to make an actual Cornucopia, but instead kept the name as it fit the purpose.

Side-note: does anyone else wish the Survival Games hadn't got as mainstream as it did? :/ Not saying this in a jealousy way, more like it becoming as popular as it did ruined the effect it had at the beginning. I remember seeing videos popping up in my sub-box one day from a ton of youtubers, all about this Survival Games thing. I watched literally everyone's perspectives that I could, got caught up in the blow-by-blow of the whole thing, and cheered the people on who I wanted to win. Played some games by myself, got all shaky with excitement, actually built some unofficial maps with my friends that we played on actively, etc. Point is, it was a special thing back then, with some form of exclusivity, where you couldn't just hop onto a server and be guaranteed a spot. Now there are hundreds of servers offering Survival Games experiences and it's just all so dumbed down.

Rambling, I know. Warframe servers are still down. :P

Heads up to you guys, I've basically been doing absolutely nothing with Minecraft for the past week or so. Warframe had a gigantic update last Wednesday, so that's all I've been playing. I have been keeping up with this thread, however, and I'm liking a lot of the pictures and things you guys are posting. Even though it's normally like this, it's nice to know that regular conversation can go on actively without me. :)

So yeah, not sure how active I'm gonna be for a while, either posting here or working on my map. In all honesty, I'm only posting this now because the Warframe servers are down. :P I'll definitely work more on my map when the new content runs out, but considering Digital Extremes releases an update every week on Wednesday that might take a while.

Uh. Today I tried to get in to World Edit for Minecraft 1.6.2 and.. I don't understand it.
I tried to create a huge cavern in McEdit to try the Smooth command, but.. Works very well with the floor, but when I tried to do it on the walls.. meh. The command just creates air pockets and make the cave look weird.

    I used the command //smooth 1 1

How do you guys smooth the walls? Seems impossible to me. Maybe just because I'm new to it...
/smooth is, like you said, only good for floors. I use the erode and fill commands in the Terraforming Toolkit to work on walls and ceilings. Ignore what other people say: the Terraforming Toolkit has far superior erode/fill commands than the newer Build Commands toolkit. I do recommend both mods though, as Build Commands has some excellent tools that you won't find in the other, it's just that the brushes in the first one feel much better to me. Kinda hard to explain, but the ones in Build Commands are rigid and easier to make hard edges with, whereas in the first kit it's easier to get rounder and cleaner shapes. :P

I am having issues with Falling Sand these days.

    /summon FallingSand ~ ~10 ~ {TileID:4,Motion:[0.0,0.0,0.0],Time:1}

This creates a Cobblestone falling sand entity. But I don't want to use the TileID of 4 anymore since they are doing away with using the numerical values. If I try "TileID:cobblestone" it doesn't work and just uses sand (the default block).

Do you folks know what I am doing wrong?
You've got the TileID right, you just need to add a "minecraft:" before it, so it becomes "TileID:minecraft:cobblestone". :P I believe Dinnerbone said this change was in preparation for the eventual Plugin API.

ok so this area isn't finished yet, but i think it coming along good.

    *snip*
I like the concept you've got going, but I think it would look a lot better with non-vanilla jungle trees, and without the two other types of trees down there. Adding some foliage to the ground, maybe draping off the side too would really look nice. And the shape of the cave looks pretty good.

    What area is this for?

I definitely like the second two (potion on the second in particular,) not sure about the first one. Using Thorns to insta-kill the player just seems a bit too unforgiving. If it took down, say, 1/4 to 1/2 of the player's health in a hit, that would be a bit more fair, but getting insta-killed is never fun. I'm assuming you'd give some indication of what they're capable of, via lore or a monster codex or something. If not, it's definitely bordering on unfair. :P

Not anymore. CTM map making has become a somewhat of a p**sing match, unfortunately. And we've all contributed to that. It's not as fun of a community as it used to be.
Ehm, actually the community is quite a bit more fun than it was around page 300 (AKA the Galaxiapocalypse). :P
