Thank you. Mainly I was looking to spread taint for the sole purpose of gaining items for tainted research. Knowing that flint gives that helps greatly.
Edit: It appears flint gives lost knowledge. Did you perhaps mean coal? (regardless, I'll be testing many other items now to see what kind of research they give)
That is really odd, I spent a lot of time last night with NEI trying to figure out which items give what research. There were several mod items that gave odd research, such as forestry stuff, but that isnt useful to everyone. I think flint was the only tainted I found in vanilla other then Mycelium blocks. I got quite a few tainted research from them, perhaps one of my mods is affecting it. Or are you not running the most recent update? Sorry about the false lead. What about http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Iron_Bars I think those gave something different as well. Might have been eldritch though.
It doesnt need to, but I think it would be better for it. Besides, it would be a tiered system, not linear. There would still be quite a bit of room for randomness. Gameplay trumps realism and it is not fun to research something that you cannot make.Quote from JonReed
The current system reflects the rediscovering of ancient knowledge, which does not need to occur in a linear fashion.
