Try to clean out your laptop's fan. It has probably gathered some dust. Using the laptop in a cool room with an AC helps with this too. You also may or may not need to get the CPU's heatsink re-set with new thermal compound.

Unity Web Player I hate... but the Unity engine seems fine to me.

Are there are log files being put into your .minecraft folder? There might be info in there that would help determine what's happening.

Back up your .minecraft folder, delete it then try again.

Have your friend try to ping the IP of the server. It sounds like a network issue to me.

I use the latest launcher but it keeps crashing. Windows 10 says Minecraft Launcher has stopped working in a dialog. The most recent crash caused that message to be spammed, causing a major annoyance. Is Mojang planning to fix this or what?

I think it'd be pretty funny (and appropriate) if Minecraft forced the language to pirate if it detected that it was pirated.

To fix this, you need to allocate more memory (RAM) to Minecraft. Xmx512M <-- that flag should be changed to 1G or 2G. 512 MB isn't enough, especially for FML.

Sounds like the crapiest mod ever.
