Perhaps it will be like lapis and give you multiple pieces of the mineral for each block of ore?
Nice call on the new Nether material being intruduced. It turns out the new material is what makes the light colored parts of the sensor and the dark colored part comes from wood planks. But either way the new snapshot looks enticing and 1.5 looks like its going to be a great release.

Hello all, I'm Doozy. I'm looking for a partner to play the newest snapshot(s) with on my server. I started playing MC in mid-Alpha, and have been playing off and on since then. I'm glad to see some cool new features being added to MC and am looking forward to trying them out. I'm 24 years old and use Skype for voice chat in-game. It would be great to find a partner who hasn't yet tried out the newest snapshots and would like to experience them in a co-op vanilla survival style of game play. I like to play MC, chat, and have some laughs, but I also like to keep the MC environment nice and clean. Meaning I never leave hanging trees, randoms towers, holes, scaffolding, or grief of any kind, and I always replant trees, clean up and repair after creepers, etc.
If you'd like to join me please reply to this thread or send me a pm with a little bit of information about yourself. If after reading your information I feel we will mesh well, I'll send you a pm and we can chat about what kind of worlds we like and then start a new one for our game-play. If you include your Skype name with your information and prefer me to contact you through there that will work too.
Happy Minecrafting!

I don't think you are looking at the full picture. What's important is not (diamond ore mined / total blocks mined) it's (diamond ore mined / total time spent mining). One will get more diamonds per unit time by making a 1x3 tunnel than by making a 1x2 tunnel, thus it is more effective. Throwing out lots of numbers and saying how you have an essentially infinite space and saying how many of certain items can be made may look cool, but it's not practical when related to people mining for relatively small amounts of time and relatively small amounts of space.

You could always make a simple stairway down to diamond layers which are Y: 5-12. It doesn't take much time and it's much safer. Also, mining 3-4 blocks high with making sure that each level being mined is within the 5-12 range will result in more diamonds than only 2 blocks high. I strongly suggest strip/branch mining with a minimum of a 1x3 shaft. I've many times found diamonds on the top layer which I only saw because I mined 3-4 blocks high while branching. Tunnels should have 2 blocks between them. 3 blocks will work although it creates opportunity to miss diamonds, with an increasing chance to miss diamonds the more blocks there are between the tunnels.

In the way adidushi is using the term "external" I believe he is talking about using a hosting company. If you wanted to get the hardware yourself and run a dedicated server and pay for the good connection speed(through ISP) then that could also be an option for a large server. But if you are not looking to do that, then renting a server from a hosting company is likely better than running it on your pc for the reasons that were mentioned before (for adequate hardware and internet connection).

What adidushi said is pretty much a good basic rundown. Another tool one can use for a quick check to see approximately how many players a server on his/her computer can host stably is here: http://canihostaminecraftserver.com/ . If you need to find out your upload and download speeds for the previous site you can do so here: http://www.speedtest.net/
The basic steps to hosting a public server on your pc:
1. Made sure to have current version of Java installed
2. Port-forward your desired port, default is 25565.
3. Download server software from Minecraft.net
4. Make .bat file to start server, or double click on server.jar file. (using a .bat gives more control)
5. Accept the EULA if you agree to the terms
7. Edit server.properties, add your internal IP(found by typing "ipconfig" into a command prompt and locating the IPv4 address), and make any desired changes.
8. Make sure your firewall allows private and public connections when the pop-up appears. If no popup then go to firewall setting and allow the version of java being used to operate through the firewall.
9. Create a redirect of your external IP using a free site like no-ip, http://www.noip.com/ , or you could use a paid host for a nicer name, or you can just give out your external IP directly, http://www.whatsmyip.org/ .

This isn't a vanilla server, the title is misleading, as I found out as I read through the post. You should advertise as a minimal-plugin server, or something of the sort, so not to false advertise.

Hey there, I sent you a PM. We should be able to figure out the problem. It's probably not related to those errors. It's usually something like a changed internal IP, or something of that nature.

Hosting one on your computer is very simple once you port forward. Most people get stuck on the port forwarding part. After that just simple server.properties edits and you're up and running. If you have any specific questions feel free to pm me, I've been hosting servers vanilla, bukkit, a mod packs for years now.

I use noip.com and it works perfectly well as a free IP redirect. Were you unsuccessful figuring out how to use no-ip or did it not suite your needs?
