So let me ask this again. Would you stand it a classroom full of 10 year olds and start spouting profanity? If the answer is "No" then why do you believe that it is appropriate here? There is no difference. The audience is the same in both cases. I'm not sure why it is that people think it is ok to do things online that they would never to in person.
Is this a classroom full of 10 year olds?
A straw man, known in the UK as an Aunt Sally, is a type of argument and is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position.[1] To "attack a straw man" is to create the illusion of having refuted a proposition by replacing it with a superficially similar yet unequivalent proposition (the "straw man"), and refuting it, without ever having actually refuted the original position.p
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man
As I said, your argument is a straw man. That's why it burns so well, it is made of straw. This is not a classroom full of 10 year olds.
Quote from cmpenney
And your tag suggestion is pointless and I think you know it. Does holding a sign over your head, or letting everyone before hand, when your swearing make it any less inappropriate in this situation. No..
Ahh we are not discussing that, we are discussing protecting the children from swear words.
This would do that, without restricting others. Do you just not want people swearing period?
Quote from cmpenney
You are just grasping a straws. There is nothing to be gained here by continuing to allow profanity in a forum that is a clearily aimed at the entire family.
I am not the one creating straw men... -

Avoiding a religious thread is easy, it's normally in the title that it is going to be about religion. Avoiding threads that have swearing in it, however, is much more difficult since there are no rules stopping it. Besides that, most religion based threads are in off-topic, which is not the focus of the forums. The focus is about Minecraft.
1) There are no rules stopping religious/political discussions. So it is equally as hard to avoid those, as it is swearing.
Maybe we can add a "swearing tag" for threads with swearing in them? Then there would be a pre-warning, which would still allow for swearing and would protect the children.
2)So the off topic subset is not a part of the MCF? If it is a part of MCF, then shouldn't it have the same rules? Religion is FAR MORE upsetting to others than swearing. When a person learns I don't believe in their gods, they get visably upset. I have had them "pray for me" which is an affront to my personal lifestyle. All of this is better than just saying "****"?
If it is not better, then you have to bring the hammer down equally. If I can not express myself, they should not be able to express themselves. (Life is not fair, I know. And I am not arguing a nirvanna, I am pointing out flaws in logic.)
---------
Does swearing need to be here? No. Do we need to be here, nope. The wikipedia can handle any and all questions regarding the game, not to mention bug reporting AND discovery.
If people want to talk about the game, why not talk about it in-game where there are NO FILTERS. (Anyone else see the sillyness?)
If parents are buying their child a ESRB 10+ game with UNRATED ONLINE CONTENT. Then they should not be surprised when their child sees an array of letters.
(More sillyness: F = okay U = okay C = okay K = okay "combine" = bad)
Also, what happens to words like associate? Or should I say "associate". Many a filter has limited my word usage just because there is a swear word in it. "constitution" "constitution"
Fornicate it.
(Will that be allowed? Since fornication is the exact same thing as the shorter 4 letter version)
EDIT-(To clarify)
"Constitution" was in reference to the character stat in Dungeons and Dragons, and not the piece of paper being defecated upon daily by my government.
"Religion" I am not athiest, I am Discordian, well I think I am. You never really can know, can you? -

so you have rules in place to prevent abuse. so why not do the same for this? just have a rule to, "Keep swearing to a reasonable level."Quote from Beltir
Actually, people do. We also do what we can to prevent adf.ly abuse, such as only the download link for content created by that person or with permission from the original author is allowed to have an adfly link, anything else is considered abuse.

adigregorio posted a message on SwearingAnyone else notice the people spouting the claim "no good reason to swear" litter thier posts with veiled insults on intelligence?Posted in: Forum Discussion & Info
"People who swear sound like they don't have a large vocabulary"
You do realize that is an insult right? You do realize that is "worse than" saying "****" right?
I understand now, insulting behavior is a-okay as long as you don't say certain words. Furthermore insulting behavior is better than just saying "****".
Just by reading the responses in this thread.
Lastly, there is no argument for keeping words. Because IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS WHAT I DO IN MY LIFE. If my words hurt your ears, then do not stand close enough to hear them. Do not enter my threads.
It is not my life purpose to make sure your ears don't bleed. It's not your life purpose to shove your outdated morals down my throat.
Just because we have a forum full of prudish behavior, doesn't mean we have to cater to them. Of course, judging by the amount of admin participation in this thread, the bad will come. Watch how "we told you so" will come from the lofty side that doesn't swear, watch how they "win". How they treat the losers when they win.
Then tell me who has the foul language. (I have seen this battle time and again)
Not all swearers are bad, some of my friends swear....
Not all "ethnic group" are bad, some of my friends are "ethnic group"...

@ Lehjr
If mojang abandons the "java version" it will most certainly fall into other hands (which can be its own can of worms either way).
@ Geneo
I was certainly not convinced by a certain screed that brought me here, but both sides have strong cases. If they must absolutely have the mobile / console versions above the "java version" I would hope they keep it around for people to play and take the authentication servers out of the equation, handling player names, skins, and what not in a different way. Whether or not they update it after this point is entirely their case.
Let's be honest. I never expected an official update to have more than vanity additions or nerfs anyway. I think the best thing we got recently was the observer which has been kind of useful alongside certain mods. Second fo llamas of course.

I got a chuckle out of "greedy pc players".
Simply, if they rename minecraft I wouldn't care one bit. I don't even look at the name in the first place so it's fine. I have a hard time believing this will effect the game in anyway. It's not going anywhere. As for minecoin, so what? People getting paid for their content? Ohnoes. The only thing is people who no longer make "java version" mods unless they get paid (psst you can already do that its called patreon). So no more mod updates? Okey dokey. Not a likely risk but it doesn't bother me either.
If java version does "end" you can still play it with mods. So put on your burlap cloak and play with and improve what you will be left with. It doesn't have to be a bad time.

The off topic section is tertiary so it shouldn't really be bothering you what so ever. Think of it as an outlet of small topics so they don't turn into digressions in the main topics.

I guess eating biscuits would be my favorite thing aside from sleep. Since my day usually breaks up into job, minecraft, sleep, biscuits.

As far as I know the discussion is still about forum rules. We are discussing why a ban on swear words is completely stupid and they are using hard arguments and fallacies to defend themselves.

Do mods improve minecraft? In my opinion, yes they do. They will be what keeps minecraft alive long after the developers move on. They are the future of minecraft.
I personally cannot wait for the mod API.
But what do you think, minecraft forums?

You know what else would be game breaking? Modders having to add content to minecraft because the people at mojang take waaay too long to give like 3 things wrapped up in 9001 bugs.
I don't see how mining spawners would ever be that game breaking.
