I know these are what YOU think is going to come, but seriously...
Wrong about Adventure Mode, it would be fairly easy to copy paste survival, change it all to adventure and then alter the stuff that lets you break blocks to deny the privilege. The trading system and villages would have been a lot more work.
Same with the enchanted items, they could easily do it so you have a separate sub-menu that lets you select enchantments to put on item x.
This makes the coding in general much easier. Instead of having to implement a SSP then SMP version, they do one. It means less bugs for both SSP and SMP in future and easier coding in general once coders get used to the new way of things working.
..Leather is hard to get? The chest full of leather stacks in my storage room and I must have missed that memo. I'd say leather is easier to get than paper...
You can have two minecraft.jars, one stock 1.2.5 and one modded 1.2.4 and simply have a .bat/batch file rename the one you've selected to minecraft.jar, start minecraft.jar (The launcher for Linux/Other OS') and then rename it back to minecraft.jar.modded/minecraft.jar.original or something when you're done playing. Use google to work out how to make .bat files. I was doing that for a while.

They won't notice it next to the diamonds. And if they do, the sign will inform them that it isn't a base. Just a hole.
