posted a message on Minecraft idea
This idea is the spider spawner I fought through and conquered only to find a single chest with a bucket in it. Go look at the endless RPG suggestions, or better yet, Kira's thread on why nearly all of them suck.

This idea is the lopsided gravel house I made on SSP. Not very well thought-out.

OP basically amounts to "a creeper but not a creeper".

This idea is the chest I made to keep my stuff in that caught on fire while I was exploring. It might possibly look good on paper (or, um, screen) to the untrained eye but anyone who plays Minecraft for more than a couple weeks would get tired of dying over and over with no repercussions at all. Death is nothing at the moment. If you can't stand to lose a couple diamonds to lava then just use INVedit.

This idea is the huge vein of iron I found underneath my base. I love it.

(although I sincerely hope this doesn't devolve into a Rwhoaranngh vs Absolete trollfest. the difference between that thread and this one speaks volumes about how delivery (and, well, basic coherence) helps a suggestion, and we should just leave it at that.)

This idea is the creeper that exploded my floor and landed me in a skeleton dungeon with no sword, and when I got back all my stuff had despawned,

Minecraft is not Shadow of the Colossus, it is Minecraft.

Punch trees, collect wood / You can't explain that

    :tongue.gif:

Anyway, the thing about Minecraft is that you're responsible for your own entertainment. There's no plot and no objectives; it's all in your own imagination.

A good question to ask a non-MC player would be: did you ever open a Lego kit and build anything other than what was on the box? If so, Minecraft will probably be enjoyable. Otherwise, you might get bored after a while.

posted a message on Adding more Ambiance (Noises, Effects, Etc.)
The eyes thing would only be good for a cheap scare. When you're exploring dark caves, leaving a bunch of torches behind you and making sure you're ready to switch to your bow at the first sign of creepers, you're not scared because "omg creepy caves". You're scared because you're actually in danger of losing all your stuff. That's half of what Minecraft is all about: the scares are substantiated by real threats. Anything that adds a scary effect just for the sake of it cheapens the effect.

Cave noises are good, if they're only used sporadically. I sort of like the contrast between the noisy surface world and the complete silence of unexplored caves.

Bird noises sounds good, although I'd also like some actual birds from Mo' Creatures. It would work well together.

The Nether is not Hell. It's styled after a hellish place, and it shared the unfortunate name for a while, but Notch himself said that Minecraft should have its own lore. This idea seems like a simple attempt to make the Nether more "hellish".

How would the solar eclipse work? The sun and moon are opposite each other to signify time of day/night.

Finally something to shut them up!

    It won't shut them up...

This is a long, detailed, and very well-thought out post rationally explaining the downsides of RPG elements in Minecraft.

And it's exactly the kind of post the RPG fanatics will respond to with "tl;dr".

Still, I think this should be stickied for the sake of those few who do read the directions.

The boats we have now are fine. You suggest creating a boat that will move around and that we can attach other blocks to, such as workbenches, chests, etc.

I'm just going to say this is impossible. So much would have to be changed for so little functionality. The payoff is simply not worth it.

posted a message on More Uses For Gravel!!!!!
Like the asphalt idea. I hate gravel at the moment, as it's basically sand that can drop flint, and making asphalt with it would add some needed diversity.

Marbles, on the other hand, aren't such a good idea. All the ideas I see here are just complexity for complexity's sake. Asphalt by itself seems reasonable.

posted a message on Grave stones for death :P
    What Kira said.

I think there's already a mod for this, called "death chest" or something that spawns a chest containing your stuff where you died.

Death is hardly a penalty as it is. Losing your stuff (and possibly getting your shelter blown up by a creeper) is at the moment the worst that can happen (I like the half spawn health suggestion for exactly this reason).

    So I think emphatically NO.

posted a message on "Better Books" Suggestion (Making Books Awsome) V2.0 (Completely Revamped)
This is an epic idea. In an open-ended game like Minecraft, useless blocks like bookshelves don't serve any purpose. I love the idea of using books to read tutorials, as there's really no other ingame way for people to find out about the game- the achievements system I saw in the 1.5 video would provide some kind of guideline for new spawners but I doubt it would provide direction by the time you'd set up a shelter and found reeds to make books.

The one thing I don't like is the part where you have to be at bookshelves to read books. Bookshelves would still be useful as a decoration, especially since you get the materials back, and you could take a book with you if you needed a crafting recipe or some info along the way.

That's not enough to make the idea suck in my eyes. Either way, you have my support. Excellent idea.

Honestly, this is one of those ideas that's pretty useless most of the time but somewhat helpful the rest of the time.

The only ideas that should be shot down because they're "useless" are the really big ideas which add a lot of useless complexity to the game. This adds no complexity at all, and can simply be ignored if you don't care about it. It would probably take a couple lines of code in a mod.

I don't care much, but if other people want it, I'm all for it.

posted a message on Epic cave system in "archimedes"
This is the one I'm using as my main, and just from this cave system alone I've found five stacks of coal (even now that I ignore most of it), five stacks of iron, a stack of gold and twenty diamonds. I'm nowhere NEAR finished exploring it.

    The entrance looks inconspicuous enough.

This is one of two entrances that meet underground, branch off again, and meet again. In one of the lower branches there is a lava spill that ends where the two meet again, and just before the cave branches out again.

Just in the upper area, above where the lava spill ends, I found an iron block and nearly two stacks of coal. in the lower area, off to the left, there are two more branches: the rightmost one contains an epic amount of iron, at least two stacks, possibly three. The left one is even more remarkable- it leads to an extremely large cavern system, filled with lava, at just the right height for diamonds to be generated.

Again, the seed is "archimedes", and the coordinates for the entrance are in that pic. In fact, the only thing wrong with those coordinates as a location for a main base is the lack of trees- make sure you bring a few saplings to plant.
