I don't try this at all, building in generated structures. I seem to get attacked by a horde of zombies every time I try. So that means I have to defend the villagers, but then of course, the villagers open the door at first light, and that's long before zombies start to burn, so they get attacked and die, and a few turn into zombies themselves. Horrible, so I'm fighting my way out of the village until zombies burn, including the poor zombie villagers.

When the villagers go inside for the night, put blocks in front of the doors. Then you can put up a wall or fencing around the village. Once you have the village isolated from the mobs, then remove the blocks.

In the first few SSP games, I built a home in the side of a hill or mountain and mined for ore. In the first SMP game, I built a castle on a large hill. In the latest and longest SMP, we built 8 block high and 3 block thick walls (with a passage way in the middle) around a village on a lagoon. The walls are crenelated with machicolations to keep out spiders and to have something to stand behind to shoot arrows. There are six towers and two barbicans, one protecting the redstone drawbridge over the lagoon and the other protecting the redstone gate to the desert. There are two postern doors and two horse only gates as well. I have expanded the village and have a villager curing station to lure in villager zombies for curing. I have cured well over a dozen zombies. Seven Iron golems have spawned and I'm debating on the plans for a cathedral for the town. Mobs can not get into the town and villagers can not get out. Each of the four main players has a home in the village. There are two quarries (one to bedrock) and three fortified outposts near important resources.

We found a village in a location that we liked and built walls around it. Now I'm adding more building inside the walls for the villagers to expand it to a town.

On a survival server my son and I set up, we found a village that was partly over water for our base. While I was mining the cobblestone for the walls (finished walls in the link below), I built a small fortified building over the shaft to bedrock. I put in gates to keep mobs from leaving the mines and invading the village and a powered door to keep mobs from wandering into the secured parts of the mines. Once the walls were complete, we left the building up as a secondary way of keeping mobs from entering the village and villagers from wandering into the mines. I have a extensive branch mines at level 5, 12, and 29. The railway runs from 5 to the room pictured. There is also a railway from a quarry outside the town to a storage room in town on level 29 as well and there is a switch on the railway on the stairs to reach that other storage room as well. The ends of the railways at the surface have hoppers to auto empty the boxed mine carts.

A night zombies will spawn and then swim across the lagoon to gather under the Villager Inn to try and get at the villagers. I named the lagoon Zombie Lagoon, so the town is called that as well. There is a Zombie Curing Station right beside the Villager Inn, so I have been rescuing villagers as well.

The new zombie mechanics make having defensive walls actually useful instead of decorative.

    Quote from Bjossi

Bows are cheap to make, and the odds of getting Infinite is lightyears higher when enchanting a bow than enchanting a book, plus you are very likely to get another enchantments along with it like Power or Flame while a book gives you exactly 1 enchantment. The same goes for diamond tools really, especially if you do some trading in a village with blacksmiths to get tools without needing to find diamond ore.

The only times I would ever want to enchant books is if I want to put enchantments on an item that the table doesn't do, like Unbreaking on swords (Which I haven't done yet actually.).

Ah, but you can then put what enchantments you want on each item from your enchanted books. We have a cooperative survival server on hard, so it doesn't matter if we get a duplicate as someone else will need it too. Not to mention that enchanted equipment wears out and/or gets destroyed, so having a backup isn't a bad idea.

Make books and then enchant them. When you get the enchantment you want, use your anvil to combine the book and the item. Remember, combining the book and item on the anvil costs some xp, but at least you can put exactly what you want on the item.

The zombie parties at the Villager Inn, regularly include a villager zombie. I have cured over two dozen of them and now our town has spawned SIX iron golems.

We found a seed with a village on the water as well. We built wooden walkways over the water and walls around the land. We put up fences on the walkways to keep the villagers out of the water. A neat side effect was that zombies gather in the water under one of the houses and they are easy pickings.

There is an underground stronghold within an easy Minecraft days walk from the village as well.

I named my horse "Dances with Creepers" as I can never hit one from horseback, no matter how many times I try.

I like the new zombies. It makes the game after the first few minecraft days more fun. When we got to the village on our server, we locked the villagers inside the homes. We then mined until we had enough stone brick for the outer layer of the lower part of the wall. We let the villagers out and have since completed the walls. With the inside of the town lit up, we haven't really had any problems. Just two zombies have spawned in the town and that was because of players who didn't properly light up their homes. Even those were not a problem, because they spawned in the homes and we heard them trying to break out and killed them.

What about curing villager zombies and releasing them back into the village? Does that help your village rep?

I usually carry stone picks for mining as I don't like wasting the iron. I finally got unbreaking to go along with fortune for the diamond pick, so I don't carry iron picks anymore for digging ores. The water is for lava and the dirt is for blocking things off.
