    I haven't looked at the code either but it's not the kind of fractal you are thinking of, like Julia or Mandelbrot.

    Landscape generation tends to be more stochastic (or random) than truly fractal, it's often a combination of different techniques. For one example, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond-square_algorithm

    My guess is that minecraft is probably keeping it very simple and using simple midpoint displacement with the error factor being based on the biome type (extreme hills having a large offset, plains having a small offset). I also suspect that in areas like extreme hills he allows the tunnel generation code to dig through the surface more (or there might be some special post-processing of those areas).
