    ITT: Fanboyism, prejudice and idiocy.

Allow me to lay it out for you.

What Mojang has done is brilliant for them, they're growing immensely and this is a fantastic move for them. No doubt Microsoft came to them, as I doubt Notch would go to Microsoft, so Notch has a severe upper hand here. Not only that, but guess what guys? You have no reason to give an actual damn about this, there are loads of people in Minecraft that act more immaturely than any 360 player, so quite honestly we won't see a single difference in the game. It's being developed BY ANOTHER TEAM so development on Minecraft will not slow down one little bit. In other words, it doesn't affect non-PC players.

All in all, people are just being raging fanboy whiners and need to quit it, this is a great step for Mojang and I applaud their progress and wish them all the best in the future, no doubt this is only the start for them.

If there's one thing I'm really interested in with this update, it's how Notch has done maps. He said he was going to make them mod-friendly, so I'm wondering if he's done it so that the server sends the imagery. In which case, there's a high chance it can be modded to show anything.

    Now that would be interesting.

Hint: When you haven't any stats, the checksum is simply the md5 of "local".

It's a command that the mod pushes to the server to identify yourself as an X-Ray viewer, so that server owners can prevent people from using X-Ray.

Be specific with this, it's not moving a server we're worried about, it's moving a million or so authentication entries to a new location, and the couple of files that go with them.

    How long should that take?

    A few hours, tops.

posted a message on What makes Minecraft so Popular?
Here's an interesting one I don't think has been done before...

What makes Minecraft so God damn popular? In the process of 2 years we've made Notch practically a millionaire. But why do we like it so much? What makes it so popular? The sandbox-ness? The creepers? The culture that now surrounds it? Or perhaps it's the ability to burn down your own house then build it up again?

And you don't know if all the data is in a Database you really don't... for all you know Notch couldve made a terribly inefficient text file system with several billion small files everywhere

    Then I will cry and lose all faith in humanity. ;_;

When I make quick prototype software I rarely break out an actual database, its far quicker to just push out a sample that uses text files to store everything and if it has enough interest in actually developing more then I take the time to make it work with a database server...

I know I can't be the only one that does that either...

Really? I find that including a MySQL/SQLite library and calling an SQL query is much quicker than writing up some crap to read text files. And, well, this isn't really prototype software, and even so would not take very long at all the import into a real database.

1.) It's not a VPS, a VPS wouldn't hold anywhere near this many people.

    2.) Where'd 10m come from? There's only been 1m purchases.

3.) It doesn't take three days to move 1 million rows of data in a database over to a new server and change a couple of nameservers, he could have quite easily left us with no skins for a few days, this really would not have been an issue at all. Trust me, I know full well that it doesn't take very long to move that many rows, I've moved a lot more than that some days, and it's only taken an hour maximum.

The convenient addition of Dispensers will certainly make creating a map in the style of the tomb level from TTT (you know the one, it has the arrow traps and the spikes and drops and such) much easier. Pondering how one could make a spike room...
