Quote from El Destructo
I feel bad for Bethesda really. They're in a bit of a fix. If they don't defend the copyright against Mojang, it could be used as a court argument for a larger company to make a claim on the copyright. If they do defend it, everyone thinks they are jerks. Lose-lose for them.
True, but they can keep Mojang behind the curve by spending Notch down. Marginal lawsuit, Mojang spends itself down a little. It's pretty straightforward corporate tactics. If a competitor presents a vague but substantial threat, and you don't have a direct way to gut them, you play head games with them and spend them down/halt development on their upcoming games.
I don't honestly think Bethesda Softworks ever expected to "win" in court. They may have expected Mojang to roll over and settle, as an alternative to prohibitive legal costs and mandated delays on development of Scrolls. But the fact that Mojang is picking up the bait, means they will spend some serious money and time defending Scrolls. This money doesn't come out of thin air, it is diverted away from design, development, promotion, and server overhead. And this is Bethesda's real goal; to sap the time and money of competitors with tactical legal ******** even they acknowledge is frivolous and untenable.
In hindsight, it would have been better for Mojang to settle and relinquish "Scrolls" for "Rolled-up Parchments" or something wacky. The outcome would have been far more strategic for Mojang's favour. 1) Bethesda would have still looked like assholes. 2) They would have the very marginal and short-term victory of sole copyright on the word "Scrolls". 3) Mojang would have saved a pile of time, money, and manpower. 4) Silly awkward names like "R-U P" are ironically appealing to People who Buy Indie Games. The pronunciation of such names usually come out as "Game that's Not Called Scrolls Because Bethesda are D-bags" in any relevant language.
Also, last time I heard having the moral high ground didn't sell games. Having your game talked about everywhere sells the game. Let's stop talking about "Elder Scr***s" and start talking about Rolled Up Parchments and Minecraft.

When you move a player in MCEdit you are actually editing the level.dat of your world (or the players/playername.dat of SMP). You will not see a new folder or file in Documents/MCEdit-schematics because it's not making anything new.
To test whether you've changed YOUR player location and not simply moved your respawn point or the world spawn, click the Goto Player -> and select your name from the list, if you're editing a multiplayer map with a folder full of player names. If your move failed, you'll be back at your original location. If the move worked, you should see a Steve head icon (player entity icon) in the desired location.
When you make any change to the world, whether a block change or an entity change (moving a player), you need to save the world.

My advice is to go play on a busy public server. Try sleeping in a bed at night - it will be a long, long night. Beds are all but useless in SMP because 15625 other players will simply not stop what they're doing and run back to their beds so you, and only you, can advance the clock.

For instance, gargamel STILL delivers a good overworld: jungle temples, desert islands, mountains and more. But its nether is crap with only 2 forts within a 500 block radius of nether 0,0. That's far enough as to make them all but useless for a fortified entry place to the Nether - imagine running to 4000, 1280 just to be able to get your portal to take you to a fort.
OTOH some awful seeds for overland have exquisite nether features - forts jammed inside other forts, triple blaze spawners, forts at 0,0 - you name it. "Jesus Christ" is one example - unremarkable surface, ironically awesome nether.
My rec is to mix and match. Use a good overland seed, look at the nether, if you don't see much then cut out that nether and paste in a better nether.

Nether forts will "generally" be in the same locations, but the individual hallways and bits and pieces that make up a fort will be laid out in randomly different ways. This is the same thing that happens to overworld strongholds when the terrain generator changes, i.e. to accommodate new biomes or a new resource. The seed determines the bounding box for the stronghold's general area, but everything that happens after that may be different.

The terrain and biomes will be more diverse and have less janky procedural nonsense. Ravines will not break the surface but be extensions of caverns, ponds of water and patches of grass won't mitigate the desert, snow biomes won't spawn right next to hot biomes. Varietal saplings will not grow outside of their native biomes, or a small number of related biomes.
All in all, it will encourage exploration, risk-taking, and conservation.
You might look into something like this as a middle ground between locking yourself in a time capsule, and playing Minecraft.

It's slow, there's a faster way that involves making a water elevator that runs parallel to the trunk and is reusable. But it takes more resources, and is rather permanent unless you want to go to that trouble and then dismantle it.
Remember that cows are 2 x 1 x 2 minimum hitbox size so they will need double the space at the top.
AND NO VINES DANGLING INTO YOUR LIVESTOCK PENS! They will climb these and derp out and fall to their deaths.

Does the daylight detector detect only large changes in ambient light? Or can it be used like a general BUD to sense when it is covered with water, etc. causing smaller changes in light? Or does it go by the system clock?
I hope that it is both more versatile than a full-day detector and possibly less sensitive to smaller changes in light levels.

I sincerely hope you take the result of this thread to Mojang, and use it to leverage a PROMPT and urgent focus on the Modding API.
Light a fire under their arses, so to speak.
Sadly, I can see this possibly going in the other direction - continued delays on the modding API while they gear up a massive suit against Curse.com for facilitating distribution of infringing content. In the end, they will do some math and decide which is cheaper, and go do that.
If this is indeed your secondary gain through all this, you're banking on the visionary attitudes of Notch surviving the log-growth phase of Mojang's existence. I think they might still recognize the long term sales value of dozens of viable mods, however infringing they may be. Good luck!

I especially like the coaster worlds and anything with exposed ores, caverns, fall damage/parkour possibilities.

2. Whining about FUNCTIONAL CHANGES
2A. Things that make the game EASIER
TITLE: Minecraft just got dumber/Wussy girly mens ruining the game/I'm bored
BODY: Back in (choose one: Indev/Survival Test/Alpha) Minecraft was a man's game, a real struggle for survival with no consolation prize for losers. Now the game is just a sandbox game with pretty packaging. If you can't fight, don't worry Uncle Jeb will fix it for you by giving you sprinting and magical powers and enchanted weapons and automatic healing. If something is on fire, you can hack the game so the fire dosent spread and kill you. Back in the day, when Minecraft was a man's game, if something caut on fire, entire forests would burn down and you would have zero wood in your spawn area.
Too lazy to find food on your first night? Now you can just eat zombies. Back when Minecraft had cojones, you had to punch a pig to death and eat raw pork to survive. No pigs or cows? No way to survive. Delete world, start over. Tall grass drop seeds? Bah. Try surviving on grass seeds in the wild.
Too poor to make torches? Now all you have to do is put down slabs. That's right, hordes of soft, crybaby wimps pressured Notch into making the half-step, or slab, which he told us was for 'decoration' but is actually a crutch for those too weak to man up and fight monsters all the time just so they can go pick their wheat. come to think of it, torches are a cop-out. You should live, fight, and die in the dark like God intended.
Now you can dance a jig on your crops but in the old days, you did that and you starved. Minecraft should be hard so you value your work and respect what farmers do every day in America to feed the starving people of the world while you sit on your blubbery white **** and play video games. If they walk around on their cornstalks they would starve and go broke. Crouch like a real man.
Oh and the nether should be a LOT harder. Pigmen should always run to you and aggro you the minute you step into their world and pollute it with your pasty sedentary gamer flesh. They should not only hack at you with golden swords, but bite, kick, and claw you to ribbons. Ghasts should not only cast deadly fireballs at you, they should crater the ground under you for 16 blocks in all directions and take over your mind and make you uninstall Minecraft. Nether forts should not be made of nice firm bricks - they should be made of superheated chunks of slag that shudder and giant clumps fall on you and squish you as you run. The very air should be noxious to breathe, causing you to drown in sulphurus gases unless you bring a gas mask.
In the End, endermen should be 100% aggro and slam into you like the Left 4 Dead charger, hurling you off the edge of the End continent. Or they should be able to pick up and shuffle Ender stone so they can dig giant potholes in it for you to fall in and break an ankle while the Dragon bears down from above. Dragons should be able to breathe fire and pick you up in their talons and drop you from great heights, instantly killing you and spraying your items all over. And the Endermen should be able to pick up your items and run off with them.
CONCLUSION:
I'm ragequiting this game, hope you wussy overprotected children like your digital Lincoln Logs.

Same goes with Silk touch, it's got a local maximum at level 26. Move the torch to a corner space of the free spaces around your table.
