The game hasn't been made/finished yet, so therefore by my logic, the update couldn't have made the game suck.
On a serious note, is it lagging because of the update, or because so many people are playing because of the update? It's probably both, but regardless it's killing me. Regardless, I'm sure Notch will iron out the kinks.
When you put it on peaceful, it's pretty good for transportation. At least, as long as your game doesn't break down. And as long as you edit the natural portals yourself, you can get it to work. Oh, and don't forget that you can abuse it to get obsidian, if you need some.
By the way, you do realized you asked "What's the point?" about something in a game where a finishing goal hasn't been set yet, right?
I put it on peaceful because my computer runs super-slow, and can't handle the sound. If I can't hear the monsters, it's less creepy and more annoying. If I had sound, I'd play on normal... But I need a computer that isn't abysmal.
Basically I play on peaceful because my computer sucks.
I still die from (lag + fall damage), so It's still somewhat dangerous.

Try taking an Isometric Map of your World. It'll show you if there's lava SOMEWHERE, although it'll only show it at the edge of the map.

There are times I just wanna build and times when I want tension. Depends on my mood.

I'd kind of expect befriending the zombie pig guys, since they're "neutral" mobs.
