The profiles are just a way for you to tell how to run the game. For example, what folder to use for your data (what would normally be the .minecraft folder), what game version to launch, the Java parameters, etc. It's all using the same account.
So let's say for example you want to play vanilla Minecraft, and be able to easily switch over to use Forge. You could add a new profile for Forge, and choose the Forge jar as the game version. Then you just pick the Forge profile and click Play, and it will load that version of Forge.
After I upgraded to Windows 10, I had to reinstall the Microsoft XNA Framework Redistributable 4.0 for Terraria to work.
Press the Windows key and type "Programs and Features", or open Control Panel and go to Programs, then click on Programs and Features. Check the list to see if there is a program named "Microsoft XNA Framework Redistributable 4.0".

To get the Pre-release:
Go in the Launcher, and click New Profile, and name it "Snapshots" or anything you want. Don't save it yet. Create a folder on your Desktop called "snapshots". In the New Profile window, check the box next to "Game Directory", and put this location:
C:\Users\(YOUR USERNAME)\Desktop\snapshots
This is so the snapshot files won't interfere with your regular files. Now in the New Profile window, check the box next to "Enable experimental development versions ("snapshots")". Then in the Use Version dropdown, select "snapshot 1.7.1". Now click Save Profile. Then click Play. It will take a few seconds to load.
To get the full version:
The full version will be released on Friday, October 25, 2013. Once it is released (see https://mojang.com/ to see if it's released), go in the Launcher and select your default Profile, and click Edit Profile. Now under the Use Version dropdown, select either "release 1.7.1" or "Use Latest Version". Now click Save Profile. Then click Play. It will take a few seconds to load.
Is Minecraft for XBOX One still confirmed? I haven't heard much about it since they announced it for PlayStation consoles/devices. I think I am getting the XBOX One. (Don't ask why; I have reasons :P)
I mostly play survival on Multiplayer servers (with plugins). If I'm bored I will play survival in Singleplayer. I also have a creative world called "Lab" in each version that I do experiments in. I don't use any mods.

I want to make a few mods with my friend soon. Maybe you guys will see those. (They probably wont be Forge though, just where you drag the .class files into the minecraft.jar)
