Although Lord Fenris was far from being a religious man, he was aware that many of his people were. Thankful for their steadfast dedication to the rebuilding of their town and for laying their trust in him, he commissioned the construction of a new church. It was placed close to the center of the new town to symbolize the central role the villagers trust in him had played in their return from the edge of oblivion the Great Fire had been. Not a day went by when the young lord did not ponder how very close they had been to utter chaos and destruction.

    Church:

Deep down however, Lord Fenris was a thoroughly practical man. He therefore set about ensuring the future safety and sustainability of their town. Grateful though he was for the aid and charity they had received from surrounding towns, and hopeful though he was for the growing market for commerce in Arrowdale, he wished for the town to be able to provide for itself. Being no fool, Lord Fenris understood how essential not being dependent on the aid of other would be should, for instance, a war be necessary. And in any case, could having wares of their own to sell do anything but increase the growing flow of money pouring into his treasury? With this in mind a farm, a lumber mill and a mine were constructed in close proximity to the town.

With the evergrowing wealth and inhabitants in Arrowdale it soon became necesarry to build more housing. Keen to avoid to spread of wooden shacks and a resulting slum, which would be vulnerable to both disease and flame, he thought it better to take the matter into own hands. With the aid of the people of Arrowdale themselves they built the Arrowdale Market. Consisting of two storied buildings with shops on the first floor and apartments on the second, they in this way managed to create new homes in addition to, yet again, increasing the amount of trade in the town. Although the houses had been built close to each other to save space, the Lord found the close proximity of the walls, the smell of freshly baked bread and the hollering of shopkeepers oddly calming.

In time the trade in Arrowdale came to include much more than wheat, leather and iron. The trading of knowledge, of science and of literature became almost equally prominent. Eager as he was to educate and diversify his town, the Lord agreed to the increasing demands from scholars and authors in the town to found a library. Receiving funds from several merchants and investors, as well as religious orders Fenris commissioned the building. When finished the massive building stood as one of the largest buildings in the whole town, housing thousands of books. The Lord could not help but think how far they had come from the small hamlet of wooden homes that had dissapeared in that fateful blaze. Although it was undoubtedly a tragedy, he began to wonder if the town, ultimately, would not be better off this way.

Overview of the whole town as it stands now:

(Thats it for now, I'm going to keep building though, and I'll post again when I feel I have something worth sharing. Hopefully it wont be too long. Feedback is as always welcome!)

(Side note: I have alot of new content to upload, but I will try to keep the posts short and sweet, so as to not make them too tedious. Enjoy!)

Although the growing market for wares in Arrowdale presented a alluring destination for many of the areas wealthiest merchants and traders, the lack of a lighthouse to safely guide them through the treacherous waters off Arrowdales coast was a prominent deterrent. Loath to squander the future of his town and people to such a simple thing as a lighthouse Lord Fenris once again dug deep into his own pockets and funded the tallest and brightest beacon the townspeople had ever seen. Many maintained that it in addition to being a guiding light for fisherman and traders, it was also a symbol for their towns fate. Being lead into a brighter future by their beloved Lord Fenris.

    Light house:

With the opening of Arrowdales new harbor the amonut of trade and commerce passing through the little town grew exponentially. Yet to the young Lord Fenris' displeasure there seemed to be a proportionate amount of illegal trade flourishing simultaneously. With the help of the two merchants, who of course were as eager as him to cut down any and all competition be it legal or illegal, attempted to combat these shady dealings with the creation of a tax house which any and all trading ships we're to report to. The plan worked and soon the Lord saw his coffers swell with the taxes on all the wares passing through his town.

    Tax office:

Yet with a growing amount of contact with other towns and a large number of travellers from strange and foreign lands, there was always a threat of conflict. As much as he wished for Arrowdale to form peacefull and profitable trading agreements with any and all towns that wished to, he was well aware this might not be realistic. As a precaution he therefore saw fit to found the Arrowdale Defensive Vanguard, and built them a massive defensive structure in which they could house their day to day operations. Their main objective was simply to protect the people of Arrowdale and her interests. Lord Fenris was adamant that the guards were simply a defensive measure and would never be used to attack other towns. Arrowdale would never engage an enemy that had not engaged them first. Touched by his sentiment for their safety many of the towns most able-bodied men soon joined up, and the Guards rosters were soon overflowing.

    Headquarters of Arrowdales Defensive Vanguard:

    Guardhouse prison:

Worried that foreign emissaries would take their extensive defensive precautions as a lack of trust, the young Lord also commissioned a luxurious new building built far from the common and rowdy wharves to house any and all foreign dignitaries that might arrive on Arrowdales shores. Built in an architectural fashion hitherto unseen in the town it caught the eyes of many a wondrous town person. The stunning array of flowers decorating the guest house's front and the resulting pleasant scents that occasionally would drift lazily over the town on summer nights gained it the nick name "The House of Petals".

    Guest house:

(I'm going to end this post here, I have more to add, but as I said I don't want these posts getting too long. Hope you enjoyed it! As always criticism, praise or indeed feedback in general is greatly appreciated. (Ideas for things to add in the future would also be great))

Ive actually been building quite alot lately, and I've added quite a few new buildings. I guess its just a question of writing the story that goes with it. But, yes. I plan to continue. Thanks for the feedback :smile.gif:

Thanks for the feedback, we eagerly await your support Lord Occam.

The rebuilding of the town continued day and night, but Lord Fenris treasury was not bottomless and soon the funds ran dry. In a desperate attempt to draw the interest of merchants Lord Fenris spent the little gold he had left constructing wharfs on which warehouses and tax offices could be built. The ploy worked, and soon two merchants had set up shop on the newly constructed docks. To the delight of Lord Fenris and the citizens of Arrowdale a man by the name of Bertrand, a drunkard of considerable wealth, upon seeing the lovely countryside surrounding the town also decided to contribute to the town. Spending outrageous sums of money Bertrand constructed the towns first tavern. The house employed several new architectural features, among them painted walls and supportive wooden beams. Strategically placed by the docks to catch the eye of any sailor that arrived, the tavern soon became a social hotspot for the entire town.

    Merchant buildings and Bertrands Tavern:

Despite Lord Fenris efforts to house all the surviving villagers, there were still many without roofs over their heads. Many of these were oprhans whose parents had perished in the The Great Fire. Taking pity on them Lady Tillian, Lord Fenris' wife, besought her husband to found the towns first Orphanage. Moved though he was by his wifes concern for those less fortunate, he was well aware that the cost of such a building would be great. Seeing an opportunity to gain favor with the new Lord both of the newly arrived merchants pledged both brick and coin to the oprhanages cause. Because of their kind donations the Fledgling Dreams Orphanage soon stood finished. So pleased was Lady Tillian with the result, that she even donated some of her own flowers to the orpahange garden.

    Orphanage:

It seemed as if their bad luck at last had begin to turn. The next morning even greater news arrived. A local fisherman had seen a large trading ship on the horizon, upon closer inspection the man had seen the familiar sails of Lord Occam, an old friend of the deceased Lord Boris. A sizeable area of the newly constructed wharves was cleared and reserved for the generous Lord to do with as he pleased. Perhaps more towns would send emissaries and wish to trade with them aswell?

Will hopefully update again in a day or two :smile.gif: Hope you enjoyed it.

    Sincerely,
    Lord Fenris

(If you've seen this allready, I apologize but seeing as the view counter was displaying 0 views even though I had looked at it several times myself I felt the need to repost)

It seems that I like many others, have been inspired by Lord Occam and the Port of Hambeck to try to construct my own humble replica of a burgeoning coastal town/port. (Remember that imitation is the greatest form of flattery Occam!) Like many other towns of this kind, this is a work in progress, and I intend to post updates whenever I feel I've built something worth sharing. Any critique is welcome, as are words of encouragement. Enjoy!

Our story revolves around the long forgotten hamlet of Arrowdale. For centuries it had stood as a beacon of mediocrity and stagnation. Ruled by the fair, yet cripplingly conservative Lord Boris of Arrowdale the town made little progress and remained nothing more than a gathering of small wooden huts standing in the shadow of an ancient castle. Yet one nightdisaster struck. A fire was lit too close to the old wooden buildings, and soon the inferno spread and engulfed the entire village.

Only the ancient castle of Lord Boris stood untouched by the fire, and many lives were lost in the tragic blaze.

Among the dead were Lord and Lady Boris and their eldest son. As they rushed to the aid of the villagers they we're trapped under a collapsing beam and perished shortly after. The town stood decimated and desolate. Yet all hope was not lost, the very next day the Lords second son Fenris returned from a journey to the neighbouring villages. Destraught and horrified by what had befallen his home and family he accepted the title of "Lord" the villagers pushed upon him, and vowed to raise Arrowdale to its rightfull place at the very pinnacle of trade in the area.

As his first order of business he ordered a memorial raised to honor the dead. Though many voiced the oppinion that the monument should stand at the very center of their new town, Lord Fenris was unyielding. "We must remember the dead and our tragic past, but our new town can not be founded on the horrors of the past! In stead, let the monument stand on the hill that will overlook our village." The monument was built and upon its four sides Lord Fenris had the masons inscribe a simple message: "Auidus in vita aeterna memoria." Eternal life in fond memory.

    Memorial:

The castle garden was at the command of Lord Fenris, redesigned as a graveyard for his father, mother and older brother, so that allthough they were gone, they would always be close.

Allthough Lord Fenris was more than eager to begin trading with the local towns, he saw that his main priority was to house the survivors of the Great Fire. And so construction began on a large town square. At great personal expense the Lord decided that the new buildings would be built in stone, so as to lessen the severity of future fires. The villagers shook their heads in wonder at the generosity and wealth of their new Lord. In addition he commanded that a large well was to be placed in the town square. A marvellous idea that would both give the villagers access to drinkable water in addition to lessening the threat of future fires. In a final stroke of brilliance the Lord had the town square built as close to his castle as possible. Defenseless as they were the villagers would have to be able to hide safely behind the castle walls, if raiders we're to attack.

    Town square: Before/ After

Behind the houses several make-shift warehouses were contstructed to house the little food and resources the villagers had.The town had begun to take shape.

I hope you enjoyed the first part of the story. (If you bothered to read it all..!) Will update soon, I just didn't want these posts becoming too long and tedious.

    Sincerely,
    Corthain (Aka. Lord Fenris)

You should get a texture pack. It gets easier to build things that fit the style of that specific texture pack as well and it also looks better. :smile.gif: Nice house, though :wink.gif:

posted a message on (Hopefully) Aesthetically Pleasing Town UPDATED
I started off trying to build a small, cozy coastal town/village, but was suddenly struck by the urge to make it stand out in some way. The notion of a village raised on a sort of platform, so that it would be unreachable from the ground surrounding it appealed to me, and I began constructing the first section. I later branched the town out into 4 seperate squares, or disctricts, with a central rural district, academic district, military district and religious/temple district. You can see the "town" as it stands now below. The central area of the city (The main platforms)is pretty much finished as I intended at this point, seeing as I've added a bath house, docks and amphitheater for those of you who saw my first post (ages ago). I've also done some pretty major work on the landscape around the town, seeing as the flat area initially was pretty much just hewn out of the rock. Any comments, thoughts or ideas for what I could add outside the town or changes i could make to the central part would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Corthain

Great, and thanks for all the positive feedback. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the open areas, Ive been considering a market, a bath-house, a kennel or a town hall/ senate building. Any ideas or thoughts would be welcome.

Im also working on some landscaping around the town, in addition to some other changes. Ill post updates as I go if people are interested. (Might also change greater parts of the Temple District, I'm not sure I'm happy with it as it is)
