With the guys I play with from time to time, we have considered and tried many ways to waste away the hours doing crazy games in survival mode. Some just ended up being too complicated when it came to rules and people actually abiding by them. I find simple is often best and so my favourite is that there are no rules...players spawn into a new world in survival mode and then spread out. Find yourself an area and start playing. Do whatever you want, and the first person to place a block of glowstone above their house wins. You could take this further I guess and make it the first to kill the dragon, but the glow stone challenge makes for a quicker game. You could set whatever target you want to, but that always worked for us. And this is the key to it...there are no rules because it would be impossible to referee it anyway. So you can play fair or dirty. It makes the players cautious and start hiding their stash in devious ways.
