As we await our final applicants, here are some images. The first three serve as floor plans for the Ulysses XVI, and the final one is a rough representation of the basic uniform prescribed to members of the military. There would be small distinguishing features for each of the different roles.

In that case, I might reserve the Chief of Staff position. I think I'll be able to weave my character to fit that role.

The position will be reserved for three days as of now. Feel free to post your application whenever you have the time.

I reckon this is interesting enough for me to break my hiatus and come back (I've just been looking at these forums every couple weeks basically). I'd also like my character to be a pilot like AstralMaria's as I'm fairly sure my character fits that role more than a soldier but if he can't then soldier it'll be.

Edit: Subordinate pilot perhaps? Or maybe the Chief Engineer, but then again I don't know haha

My character's more of an agile, perceptive kind of guy.

    Hi Knight; welcome back!

I'm going to make the suggestion/request that you choose a role other than subordinate pilot; I was making that an option in case there was a surplus of players, which there doesn't seem to be. Having a Soldier or a Chief Engineer would be very welcome, but also keep in mind the Chief of Staff position; I imagine they could have some military background as well, and it's a position I would really appreciate seeing filled. That said, your interest is enough to make me excited, so take whichever role suits your character best!

There has been, in recent times, a distinct lack of space operas on this roleplaying forum. Today, we enter a brave new age, where Mission will fill this void, with adventure, plot, and character development.

The Ulysses XVI is leaving Earth's military port tomorrow. Its skeleton crew will embark on the ship's first expedition, a six month journey to the battlefields where the Empire of Humanity faces off in prolonged skirmishes against the Roxani Coalition. The ship's purpose is to deliver a new, experimental weapon to the human forces, hopefully breaking the deadlock which has sat over the war for months.

It was the year 2332 when humans first expanded beyond their solar system, having finally made a variation of the Alcubierre warp drive into a reality. Already well practised with the colonization of their own solar system, humans soon expanded to nearby star systems as well, encountering, for a time, no new lifeforms. The human race enjoyed a period of prosperity and general peace for decades, as many obstacles of the past were eliminated. Population constraints and a lack of resources were no longer issues.

Space did have its mysteries. Some planets reported UFO sightings, but no more frequently than Earth had in earlier times. Explorers sometimes cited strange objects in the depths of space. Other times, they never returned. However, humanity had accepted that space would be a dangerous place, and it was willing to pay a few small tributes to the void in the form of lost cargo ships in return for the new golden age of civilization.

Albatross was a planet with an average distance from earth of five months in travel time. It was naturally similar to Earth in many regards, but had never developed life. Terraforming allowed the planet to become an earth analogue, with a selected variety of organisms. It became an ideal destination for settlers, a launching ground for future expansionist expeditions, and a local hub for culture, manufacturing, trade, and politics in its region. Its population was two and a half billion by the end of the 24th century.

In 2407, Albatross was attacked. Survivors from the capital city recounted waves of agile ships laying waste to everything with lasers and bombs. Albatross' defence force, a small fleet of lightly-armed spacecraft meant for policing the streets, were decimated in the first attack, and larger defences - guns situated on the planet's three moons - were destroyed as the attack commenced. The planet was held for a month, until a force comprised of the region's planetary militias arrived. The invaders retreated almost instantaneously, only putting up enough of a fight for their ground-based troops to escape.

Smaller targets were raided in the ensuing months, until a retreating group was tracked to a distant region. It was already known from studying the few corpses left after the Albatross occupation that the enemy was comprised of several distinct alien species. Several liberated prisoners, claiming to have spoken with the aliens, called them the Roxani. Now, scouts reported that they had discovered at least the tip of a densely inhabited region from which their enemy seemed to originate.

There had been talk, before the attacks, of uniting all the human settlements under a shared government. Now that they had a common enemy with an unknown degree of strength and hostility, this process became far easier. The Empire of Humanity was formed under the patriotic fervour of protecting the peace and prosperity which had thus far been achieved, and under this new government, a single military body was formed. Earth became the central spire of this interstellar union, while other seats of governance across the empire began to formalize themselves.

The war between the Empire of Humanity and the Roxani Coalition was fought for fifteen years. Technology advanced rapidly on both sides; occasionally, it advanced from one side to the other as raids allowed new weapons and tools to be adopted from the enemy. Some human groups grew tired of the war's longevity, but the war did not stop. In March 2422, the fourth battle of Albatross began. Though it had been reduced to gravel and strays in both the first and second battles, it remained a symbol of humanity's resilience against the Roxani. The Roxani, too, seemed to treat it with greater importance than they would other previous targets.

Today is January 17th, 2423. The crew of the Ulysses XVI gathers at the base of the space elevator which will bring them to Earth's military port, a space station from which military vessels like their own are launched.

    Character Creation:

      • All characters are members of the crew of the Ulysses XVI. They may fill any of the following roles:
        • Chief of Staff (essentially a second-in-command; oversees the other staff of the ship.)
        • Medical Officer (the doctor, of course.)
        • Munitions Technician (primary purpose being to ensure that the ship's cargo doesn't explode or suffer damage which renders it useless. Mostly the first one, though.)
        • Soldier 1 (Theoretically, they are present for the worst case scenario, that the ship enters combat with the Roxani or other antagonistic forces. Also, to stop any traitors onboard the ship.)
        • Soldier 2 (Theoretically, they are present for the worst case scenario, that the ship enters combat with the Roxani or other antagonistic forces. Also, to stop any traitors onboard the ship.)
        • Chief Engineer (all the ship-fixing stuff goes here.)
        • Subordinate Engineer (secondary engineering. Not necessary, but more than welcome.)
        • Pilot (generally a one-person job for these ships, but there is room for a subordinate here. They handle navigation and communications.)
    • More opportunities to join will appear later, if the roleplay is successful.
    • If you would like to keep certain aspects of your character as a secret, PM me, Commandosaurus, and I'll be more than happy to incorporate this into the story. This might include your character secretly being a traitor, or having an ulterior motive, or a hidden portion to their backstory. So long as I am made aware of it, it should be fine to include.
    • After applying and being accepted, you will receive a private message which will include a secret only known by the character in your chosen role.

As for being pilot: sure thing! I probably should have mentioned that people were allowed to claim positions in the interest check, but I'll do that now: if you're committing to roleplaying, feel free to claim one of the roles.

Im interested. My only suggestion would be a "secret" for each role, like how you described the technician knows what the cargo is. (However, I would assume that the soldiers have the same secret, and the engineers as well.)

I'll be sure to give every character a different 'secret', in addition to any ones roleplayers work out with me about the character outside of its role. Thanks for the suggestion!

Additionally, I have to say that I'm very glad to hear that you're interested.

The Ulysses XVI is leaving Earth's military port tomorrow for a six month journey to the frontlines of the Human-Roxani War.

The ship's cargo? A new type of munition, whose destructive capabilities are classified from all but the most vital members of the crew.

The ultimate goal? To defeat the Roxani Coalition, a united front of countless alien civilizations who have banded together in defiance of The Empire of Humanity's exploration, expansion, and survival.

    How will this roleplay work?

    1. First, members will apply to fill one of the following roles aboard the Ulysses XVI:

    • Chief of Staff (essentially a second-in-command; oversees the other staff of the ship.)
    • Medical Officer (the doctor, of course.)
    • Munitions Technician (primary purpose being to ensure that the ship's cargo doesn't explode or suffer damage which renders it useless. Mostly the first one, though.)
    • Soldier (two of these, ideally. Theoretically, they are present for the worst case scenario, that the ship enters combat with the Roxani or other antagonistic forces.

That means there is room for 6-9 members. Ideally, we'll need at least 4, and I can fill additional roles as NPCs. (As I will be doing with the Captain, for reasons of national security.)

That also means there will be a large emphasis on staying committed to the roleplay. Obviously, life happens. But if people begin disappearing semi-permanently, then the roleplay doesn't happen, quite simply. Unavoidable absences can be handled, of course, but unannounced absences are very difficult to deal with for a roleplay like this.

That said, there will come a point down the road where more members could join, and where people whose characters were killed could make a new character. This, of course, would only happen if the roleplay lasted that long, which would be dependent upon people not disappearing.

    2. Then, some shady backroom dealing will occur. There are several different aspects to this.

On one hand, members will be encouraged to send me a PM if they are interested in having parts of their character kept secret but incorporated into the overall plot. This includes secret motivations, affiliations with illegal organizations, plots for sabotage/treason. In fact, it's almost required that one person have some ulterior motive. I'll explain this better if we get past the interest check stage.

On another hand, I will message certain people who have filled certain roles with secret information only they would know. For example, the Munitions Technician will be given the information regarding the nature of the munitions.

    3. Finally, the roleplay will begin. Expect a lot of information regarding the ship, general technology, the setting, the Roxani, and Earth to be provided between the official post and the rest of the first page.

    4. Of course, it just wouldn't do to ignore the fact that the roleplay will then get far more involved. There will be a lull at the beginning to develop characters and relationships, followed by some fast-paced action which will set the plot into its highest gear. Characters will die, and there will come a point where the control over these deaths will no longer be given to roleplayers.

    When will it start?

Of course, it's important not to ignore the earliest part of the process:

    0. Before anything else, this interest check needs to get off the ground. You can assist by posting a comment below. Everything is helpful feedback. Do you have questions? Ask, and I shall answer. Is this something which already sounds interesting? Let me know, so I can keep track of how many people are interested. Do you want to provide some criticism? Have at it. Did you simply stop in by accident, and now want to know a way out? Post a simple 'not interested' before you slink away.

posted a message on Three Mountains (OOC)

There is in this world an island, upon which there lie three mountains. Between these mountains are cities, in which people live. There are forests, too, and a few dozen farms for every castle. There are bears and eagles, snakes and ravens, deer and mice. There are well-travelled paths between the cities, and more treacherous ones, too - ancient paths which have been abandoned for the feasts of nightmares and myths.

The island is a circle. Its circumference is formed by many beaches, but mostly cliffs, leading up to the three perfectly equidistant peaks. Two of the peaks are pointed, nearly identical, but the third has crumbled, as if a giant has snapped it off. These mountains are enormous, and despite the expanse which separates them, all three mountains can be seen from any point on the island. They serve as landmarks, points of reference, and symbols for a dozen concepts, fears, and goals.

In the cities live humans. To us, they would be but strange medieval villagers, but to them, they were a society. Merchants travelled from market to market, hiking up prices with each subsequent deal. Assassins and mercenaries supplied their services to lords and ladies, or others with equal clout. Shamans sold their strange brews and invoked their odd curses, garnering equal parts ridicule and fear for their efforts. Farmers tolled in fields, and craftsmen made weapons and tools. It was to them a normal life, for they knew of nothing beyond their island, and few things beyond their island knew of them.

There was, in the centre of this island, a chasm of darkness. It was malevolent by nature, but in the collective memory of the populace it had never been an active danger. The darkness swirled like storm clouds at the bottom of the pit, forever threatening... something. Those who had climbed down into the pit, coming within inches of touching the darkness, had faltered at the last moment, the strange, preternatural fear instilled in them overcoming their senses and sending them into a controlled but hurried retreat.

This pit, like many lesser regions of unease, was a symptom of the ominous presence across the island and beneath the three peaks. Something was askew, and the people, had they normal people to compare themselves too, would have recognized that they were as affected as their land. Some were oddly manic, others strangely skilled. Some had heard prophecies, but they had no recollection of where or when these prophecies had planted themselves in their minds. Others dreamt of darkness, swirling beneath the seas, with thick-haired beasts gathering in armies of death. One man could control fire, and was forever haunted by a beast which ate fire - a beast which few had seen, but fewer wanted to. This was a land of strange things, but these strange things were rare enough that they became myths and legends. Reality only dawned every few years, when life was usurped by the latest odd occurrence.

Beyond all this, there was time. And it is to a point near the end of the peaceful time that we travel now. Be wary, though, for even time seems to be askew.

    Welcome.

If you made it through that, you can make it through this roleplay - trust me.

This is very prominently an open-ended roleplay. The setting has been created, but there is room for new elements to be added by everyone who joins. This means that those who join must have an interest in creating plots, free of the overarching story. This is as simple as ensuring that characters have personal motivations which drive them towards independent goals, and which keep the roleplay interesting for everyone.

This ability to accommodate independent plots is both an open-world roleplay's greatest asset and its greatest risk. To overcome the risk factor, members will be encouraged to communicate out of character, finding ways for their plots to intertwine.

As for mechanics you should be aware of:

    • There will be occasional dice rolls performed by yours truly, the GM, to decide if a random encounter will occur. Be prepared for these to add new obstacles to plots, and to provide springboards for exciting moments and twists.
    • More minor, administrative things in progress

Members will be allowed to have as many characters as they choose, but my personal recommendation is to stick to a small number (like one) to avoid dilution. If you are sure you'll have the time and energy for more, by all means, go ahead.

    And finally, applications:
