Interesting idea, although I think the actual lore surrounding anything in Minecraft should be kept to a minimum; vague hints at things make it more mysterious. "There's this shrine with a weird looking statue" is much, much more interesting to wonder about than "this is a shrine to the god of so-and-so". Perhaps a book filled with gibberish, with the occasional couple English-like words repeated here and there, could be among the loot. I also like the idea of a fake nether portal (made of black wool or something?); perhaps in "darker" looking shrines that could be dedicated to gods of the underworld or demons or something.
Really, religion trolls, really? I hardly think anyone would be offended by vague hints at an ancient, fictional, religion. Get over yourselves.
It's not the fictional religion part so much as it is establishing a canon in Minecraft that might clash with peoples headcanons, which have been the only "canon" so far. As you have said, the idea could work just fine as long as it stayed vague and didn't set too much in stone (pun not intended).
Ever since 1.8, food has lost its healing abilities in order to make way for the Potion system. Unfortunately, the regeneration granted by a full stomach seems to render Potions moot in vanilla Singleplayer, since you get them so late in the game you're already used to regenerating. I have a compromise.
First, we tweak the Potion system a bit. The level 1 and 2 Potions made in the Brewing stand are now designated 2 and 3, and the Cauldron now gets its own GUI and its own way of brewing potions. Unlike the randomized brewing it used to have, this new system would work a bit more like the Brewing Stand, but with some differences:
-it's less efficient, having a 1:1 input/output ratio as opposed to the Stand's 1:3
-It brews more slowly than the Brewing Stand and/or the Brewing stand gets a faster brewing speed.
-it brews level 1 Potions from more common ingredients, eg Tall Grass as a priming ingredient, Apples for health, Cactus for power, sugar for speed, etc., while the Stand's Nether Wart-based potions would start at level 2.
-Cauldron has a 1/10 chance of brew failure; failed potions will have a random effect such as nausea, weakness, or temporarily turning into a passive mob (would deny access to inventory and prevent attacking).
Food healing would require a tweak, as well: full-stomach regeneration would be either removed or slowed considerably, but eating food items would grant small amounts of health for each item consumed (though Potions would still give more health).
That's basically the long and short of my idea, any thoughts/suggestions/comments?
We've never even encountered one yet, and you're already calling a vote to remove them? As you said, Creepers pretty much already do what these guys will do, so what makes these guys any worse than Creepers? Frankly, I WANT more mobs that can attack my creations; it gives me a reason to build a lava moat other than to look cool.
Except the Greek version is winged and female, and thus not a true sphinx.
There is no "true" Sphinx; both Greek and Egyption civilizations have come up with mythical beings called "sphinx"es, but just because one is a lion with a human head and the other is a winged cat-like female creature doesn't mean one of them is "wrong"; it just means they were invented in the time before copyright laws said you couldn't have to different things with the same name.
This is... pointless. Granted, wood types with varying levels of durability while in block form (so they're really only good for construction) might be ok, but making wood that makes iron things and caves in tees doesn't make a lot of sense. The whole reason iron is underground and trees are only on the surface is so you have a reason to move between those areas instead of just stay in one all the time.
1. Presentation is actually incredibly important when posting a suggestion. This includes taking the time to write a good presentation text. Not doing so leads to the kind of hostile replies you've been receiving here .
2. Please don't argue with people who reply to you. Suggestions will receive criticism, both constructive and harsh, and you would have been way better off going back to your OP to correct it than getting angry with those who replied to you.

I couldn't have said it better myself.
