Ok, I'm looking for a reliable/unbreaking way to separate and space out clumped minecarts on a server. I'm working with multiple lines coming into a relatively small area, so it needs to be at least somewhat compact. Ideally 2 wide repeating. Carts will be mixed empty and occupied.
I've done a number of designs til now, but they've all either been unreliable or too fragile for practical use. A recent HDD failure killed those world saves, so unfortunately I can't post examples.
Please do help, this mechanism has been bogging me down way too long.
The place I uploaded will only keep a file for 30 days if not downloaded, which is probably why you can't get it. I'll find a better place later this week since someone's interested. If your in a hurry, the pics show how to build it. Only thing not shown is the pulse limiters. Just run with the lowest that works. Sorry that I can't provide more information right now, I'm heading off and probably wont be around for a few days.
Actually, coding on something like that would be fairly simple. If this block and that fuel, then have this effect. The question isn't difficulty in programming, but whether mojang would find it worth their time.
As for the glitch itself, I think its a cool find. Or rather, useful. The glitch itself isn't a good thing, but us players have a use for it. What Mojang should probably do is remove our need for it by allowing us to craft the blocks we can't otherwise obtain. Two stone halfslabs crafting a seamless block seems reasonable. (as an example)
This counter may serve you better then the other. Its smaller, more resource friendly, and has much less chance of loosing a count when you add and subtract at the same time. The downside is that subtraction is a bit less responsive.
This will do what your asking. I apologize for the crudeness, I need sleep pretty bad. The concept is all there for you. Pressing a button will free the cart and set a RS NOR latch that controls the return junctions. As the cart returns it resets the latch.
It needs to be modified to not accept multiple inputs. If you need help with that I can meddle with it more tomorrow.
Sounded like a fun idea, so I made one for myself. I used a piston counter, such as what KidMischief had originally suggested. You'd probably get it a bit more compact with a ring counter, but this is what I'm used to working with. The world is for download below, if you want to check it out.

Hehe. I know the feeling. And yeah, the dust is needed. For some reason, the torch was only powering the blue piston. :/
@ dummy66
Is this more to your liking? The button is reset.
Again, a picture is worth a thousand words.
