    Quote from IronMagus

Biomes are now grouped into "snowy," "cold," "medium/lush," and "dry/warm" varieties. Biomes of the same type tend to generate near each other, in large areas. So while in pre-1.7 Large Biomes you might have a great big desert, on a regular 1.7+ map you'd have a smaller desert, but next to that you'd have a mesa, then maybe another desert, then some savannah, and more deserts and mesas, etc., all grouped together. Altogether, it may be even bigger than just the desert was on Large Biomes. Now can you imagine if each of these were Large Biomes-sized biomes, and they were still all clumped together? You might not find an oak tree for miles!

Got it... so in essence Default became Large Biomes?

Actually, you can use NBTExplorer to edit level.dat, changing generatorName to largeBiomes.

Although, if you are playing in 1.7+, that doesn't sound like a good idea, with the separation/clustering of biomes and all, such that the default world type might as well be large biomes (and large biomes extra large biomes).

Can you elaborate on that? What is this separation/clustering of biomes?

By starting a new world, unfortunately.

There is got to be a way to do it... if its possible to do in multiplayer there should be nothing stopping you from doing it in Single Player.

In Multiplayer its easy, just edit server.properties and the world is switched. I also have a Single Player world that at this point is 2 or so years old, and I play on it quite regularly. I would like to change it to have Large Biomes so that new areas I explore have large biomes. I want everything else to stay intact. How do I do this?

posted a message on Chunks of blocks loading super slow for clients
I ran into the same issue, and ended up fixing it the same way, I made a post here = http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/2196193-is-this-a-known-issue-with-open-gl-renderer/

I wonder if its a known issue...

posted a message on Is this a known issue with Open GL renderer?
It seems like Open GL struggles to render chunks when going full speed on a rail for more than a minute, eventually chunks load literally 3 blocks in front of you... doesnt matter if there is 1 person on the server or 100, same performance, server itself is an Ubuntu linux server with plenty of bandwidth and hardware to host 100+ people.

Once Open GL is turned off going max speed on a rail will render all the way to the horizon maximum distance of chunks possible without any problems, again with 1 or 100 people on the server doesnt matter.

So its not the server hardware, its not the client PC (since this happens on top of the line PCs).

Is this a known issue with Open GL renderer? Seems like the bottleneck is not the Client PC, not the Server PC, not the network... but specifically Open GL renderer choking on processing networked (not local) data. Almost like it cant process the data fast enough to render any significant distance?

Now that I know the culprit eveyone on my server turns off Open GL and everything is dandy, but I am just curious if this is known and if there are any plans to optimize it further? Would be good to have server.properties have an option to enforce a renderer, since this Open GL slow rendering can be used to cheat (reveal underground loot/hidden stuff) by looking through half rendered chunks.

posted a message on Very slow chunk loading while on rail since 1.6?
Has anyone experienced this? My server ran fine for about 2 years until around the time of 1.6, when all of a sudden traveling by rail, if going fast causes chunks to basically only load right in front of your face (very slow chunk load), where previously they would load easily to max chunk distance.

Number of people on the server has not changed, there are no mods or anything just vanilla server. Nothing about the server has changed since before..

Ive been sitting on this hoping it would get fixed in one of the updates, but its been nearly half a year and nothing...

am I the only one experiencing this?

PS - playing normally (i.e not traveling fast, its fine, never any problems everything runs great!)

posted a message on Server same size as RAM crashes?
So then theoretically no matter how large the world is RAM usage should be the same?Just so that I compare it to mine, what kind of usage are you guys seeing on vanilla server with 1 player?

I dont have the message saved anywhere. Ill have to grab it next time it happens. And how would it not be related? Minecraft server loads the world into RAM... correct? If the server size is larger than available RAM, then what happens?

posted a message on Server same size as RAM crashes?
    Hello,

I have a server that is approaching 1GB in size (actual size of the server folders). I noticed that when trying to explore my server tends to crash.

I am running it on a Linux server with 1GB of ram.

So Im guessing this is happening because it is trying to load the entire thing into RAM and then it runs out of RAM?

Is there a way to make it offload far away parts of the server to the hard drive or something?

    Anyone run into this issue?

posted a message on No monsters at all aft upgrading to 1.3.1?
After trying 1.3.1 Bukkit server mobs are back. So it seems that there is a bug in the vanilla server executable.. at least the jar version.

I've been running a server for multiple years now, the day 1.3.1 came out I upgrade the server. Now there are no mobs at all at night or day, and no squids at all anywhere. Been playing multiple days, several people confirm.

I re downloaded the server jar (Linux server) several times to make sure it's not the issue. I also verified config file several times. Difficulty is set to 2 and monsters are set to true.

    Anyone else experience this?

Everything is running on vanilla, vanilla server vanilla client.

posted a message on Possible to stop time if noone is on the server?
Basically I want to save on CPU cycles and want the server to kind of "sleep" when noone is connected. Basically everything stays in the same state as it was when the last person disconnected until someone connects again. is this possible?
