Honestly, flowers should work according to Conway's Game of Life, with system updates taking place every morning.

    I support this request.

How would the interaction be between different types of flowers?

I think it would be most interesting if all flowers where treated as one type for liveness (e.g. a yellow flower next to two live red flowers survives), but reproduction would randomly select the type from all types of neighboring flowers (e.g. a dead cell next to two live yellow and one live red flower could spawn as either a yellow or a red flower, but a dead cell next to three red flowers would only spawn red flowers).

If conway's game of life gets sufficiently large, then it grows without bound, which would be bad. Of course, there would be plenty of things that would impede growth (height difference > 1, snow, trees, sand, water, etc), but I'm not sure it would be enough. After a little bit of time, I think that all steppe regions would be completely invaded by them.

By the way, it would be possible to have more than 8 neighbors, because each column could have up to two dirt neighbors:
    :RFlower:
    :grass:
    :RFlower: :grass:
    :grass:

Still, it's close enough for making a mod. It would definitely be fun to experiment with.

I've thought for a long time that Conway's Game of Life would be an awesome mechanism inside MC. Thematically, flowers would be perfect.

Imagine a working calendar where each month was signaled by gliders made of flowers. Wow, that would be awesome :smile.gif:

posted a message on Bonemeal (should get a sligh nerf) video and explication
I already have a wheat farm going, so I already have unlimited wheat. Everytime I come home, I spend 1 minute harvesting my 150 wheat and replanting.

That's enough to make 50 bread, which is far more than I will use the next time I leave my house. The result is a chest full of wheat.

My tree farm is the same. I have more wood from it than I could ever need. So, fertilizer is useless to me.

The only practical use for fertilizer is starting a farm. Getting enough seeds or saplings to get going used to take a lot of time, but now it is easy. Oh well. It doesn't seem like a problem.

We have so many threads about this. Can we just pick a thread and make it a megathread or some ****.
PS, it's going to be a walrus that steals buckets.

This is the "main" thread on this.

The original thread was about Notch's whole blog post, but focused mainly on water mobs. I think that most of the images from there have been reposted here.

You don't really know why minecraft is a good game, do you?
If there was XP, unlocked skills, unlocked recipes, ect, most of the players (at least from what I can tell from the vocal players) would quit. Let me guess, you probably think that minecraft should have HD textures too?

I think I know why minecraft is a good game, and you and I would not disagree on it. I might be one of the very same players that would quit if the game became more defined.

But, being a "good game" is very different from being a "successful game". Sure, Minecraft is successful compared to the low budget of the game, but if you compare it to a game made by some random EA studio, where they have 100 artists and 70 programmers, then Minecraft's success is pretty low.

I think the key is modders. Mods like Team Fortress and Counterstrike were very important to the games they were based on (Quake Arena and Half-Life). If mods for Minecraft turn it into a complete game, then it can both be successful to the average gamer, and still remain a sandbox for developers. Since Notch is focusing now on mod support, this may happen.

Top two computer games in 2001 were "The Sims" and "Roller Coaster Tycoon".

Of course, Minecraft isn't anywhere near one of the top games this year. 10 years from now, people may remember Minecraft as the beginning of a genre, but I imagine that we'll be laughing at how silly it was for us to be wasting time with such a game.

I don't know if this has been already quoted but i laughed out loud :biggrin.gif:
I mean, it was awarded as a top game by many sources :smile.gif:

You have a very narrow focus. I have a job in the industry, and know what people are talking about, and it is not Minecraft.

Minecraft isn't pushed at your local electronics store, and that is where most sales come from. If it's not in a store, then it won't be given as a Christmas gift. If it's not on Steam, XBLA, or PSN, that alienates a good portion of the remaining market. Lastly, you aren't shooting a gun, and the game is not polished. For these reasons, most gamers that I know will never buy the game.

The titles in 2011 will be even bigger, and I really don't see Minecraft as being a big mover in the market at all. The truth is that people have been able to overlook the lack of focus in the game because it was only in alpha. Now the game is in Beta, and we still don't know anything about player progression. Will there be XP? Will you unlock skills, or more recipes? I think this lack of focus on design is really going to hurt the game once it goes live (leaves beta).

Seriously, I don't think anyone is going to remember much about this game 10 years from now. It may be remembered as the start of a new style of games, but clones that come out between now and then will be much bigger than Minecraft ever will be.

To be clear, I don't think that it's bad game, or that Notch doesn't deserve the money he has made so far. I'm excited about the future of the game, but I don't think it's going to be big enough to matter much 10 years down the road.

That's what I do also, and it works pretty well for keeping me from getting lost. Sometimes, if there's not enough room for two torches vertically, I'll use two horizontally over the door that leads home.

The redstone torch idea seems pretty good. I may start using that instead.

Notch has already confirmed that there will be achievements. In November, he talked about crafting achievements:

I'm not convinced that it will be a good thing for a game that is as moddable as this. If they are tied to your account, then you can probably get them all in about 15 minutes using invedit and MCedit.

    1) support forum is for this. Of course, they'll ignore you, so good luck

    2) Try loading a new world in single player. I've had chunk errors occur while saving, and then when you try to load the level again, you get a crash like the one you described.

Does the game pause when you hold F3? I'm not at home, so I can't really check.

My guess is that the processor is used for both simulation and rendering, and simulation could be paused when holding F3.

He tweeted that they are going to the "repository." I think this means he put them on the back burner until he can figure out how to implement them without breaking stuff.

Saying that they are going into the repository means that he has them working well enough that he is checking his code into the official version. It's common terminology for any source control system.

Of course, even if he checks code in, the feature may still be turned off, or he may be checking it into a branch that is off the mainline. Since it's not open source, we can't really know what he means by this.

Actually, the water is flowing down. But, the speed and direction of the water is not enough to counteract the block's desire to float, so they still go up.

These weird physics are what make water elevators work.

Im pretty sure that the boat elevator works because the boat has to be on top of the water so it zooms to the top...

I'm not sure how that's different than what I said. Things that float have to be on the top.
