    Realistic Torches

Realistic Torches is a lightweight mod designed for modpack makers looking to add difficulty to the early game. The primary feature of this mod causes torches to burn out after a configurable amount of time, encouraging players to move toward more permanent light sources early on.

    Download

    AdFly Mirror

    Features

    • Torches are now unlit when crafting, and must be lit using a matchbox in a crafting grid or flint and steel after being placed. As a result, the matchbox must be acquired before players can do things like explore caves or prevent hostile spawning.
    • Torches will burn out after a specified amount of time (60 minutes real time by default, can be changed in the config) and become unlit. This encourages players to seek more permanent light sources early on, such as glowstone or lava.
    • Torches will be extinguished when rained on.
    • Permanently lit torches can be crafted using a glowstone crystal instead of coal.
    • Naturally light-emitting blocks (and some items) will emit light when held, making it easy to explore at night without having to constantly place torches.
    • Torch recipes added by other mods will be removed to ensure that the matchbox or flint and steel must be acquired to craft lit torches.
    • Torches generated in vanilla structures will be replaced by lit torches.
    • Highly configurable in order to provide you precisely the play experience you want.
    • Translations for English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Pirate.

Souls is a hardcore post-death inventory storage mod. After you die, an angry Soul that holds your inventory will spawn. Good luck!

    Features

    • When you die, a Soul spawns. It will hold your items and equip your armor if any are available. You must kill the Soul to get your items back, or you can use the Pickpocket's Gauntlet to try to steal them back.
    • Souls will fight back if you attack them but will de-aggro after you die.
    • A Soul Identifier can be used to view information about a Soul, including the name of the Soul's owner, the amount of time since they died, and the number of items being held. The Identifier can be crafted with a Book and an Ender Pearl.
    • The Pickpocket's Gauntlet can be used to attempt to steal items from a Soul. If the thief fails, however, the Soul will attack. By default, the Pickpocket's Gauntlet has a 10% success rate and 16 charges that can be refilled using Ender Pearls. The Gauntlet can be found in village blacksmith chests.
    • Souls is highly configurable in order to provide the level of difficulty that you want; you can change anything from making Souls equip the best weapons and armor in their inventory to making Souls completely passive.

    Quote from kokonussi»

Okay, so first of all, let me just say that this mod rocks! As a (now) somewhat seasoned player who's still too much of a wimp for anything over Normal difficulty (played since the early Beta, but used to play on Peaceful all the time) and therefore shies away from any "hardcore" mods, I use this mod to add a bit of a challenge to the game.

    ...

Thank you for the suggestions! I especially like the "glowstone paste" idea. I'll look into it.

To answer your question, jack o'lanterns don't burn out. They do, however, require a vanilla torch in their crafting recipe, so that rightly puts them in the same boat as permanent light sources.
