I take back what I said about coding. After about a solid day of research I have officially found the problem: It's our drivers. They aren't updated enough.
Sadly, we can't update them. Laptops tend to have custom made drivers, or drivers with custom features on them. These features make it impossible to update the drivers by using the driver's updater.
I'm not sure why that first thing I suggested worked for a few minutes. I guess without it your laptop's CPU will overload and crash the game before the game crashes your laptop. Just a guess.
In conclusion: you can find a way to manually change your driver, which I don't recommend, or you never play Minecraft 1.9 and up on it. Your choice.
A mate of mine figured out a possible cause to the problem: Some mucked up coding(?) in the 1.9 update which effect so little people it went unnoticed and moved into update 1.10.
I reccomend just playing 1.8.9 or lower since none of those versions share that coding... It's not ideal, but I'll try get in contact with the game's developers. God knows why it effected no one but us...
Actually, what kind of Computer do you have? That might be why...
Okay, found a solution. I don't know why this works, but it does. (Before I start this MIGHT work, it's not definite)
Steps:
1. close Minecraft if it's open and right click on it's launcher
2. Open properties.
3. In properties open the compatibility tab
4. Tick the compatibility box and set the box to whatever system you are running (for you it'd be windows 8)
5. Change the settings for all users (Basically the same as step 4 but doing it too all the users)
6. Apply changes and run Minecraft
I just want to say that this worked for me but I don't know enough about computers to say why it worked. Also, this method doesn't stop the crashing but makes the game a hell of a lot more stable (for me, tabbing out of the game would cause it to crash. May be different for you)
I hope this solves the problem. I'm still looking for a solution for Tekkit though it may still be connected.
(After some testing)
I was wrong. This works, but only temporarily. I've tested it a few times and it still seems to be crashing for the same reasons as before.
I've been having the exact same problem. Tried to fix it with the vanilla tekkit pack but that crashed before even loading up the game (Modded packs don't work either). I doing a bit of digging into the tekkit stuff just in case the two cases are linked, so if I find anything I'll report back.
Try small and new servers. Most soft ones die pretty quickly unfortunately. Longest soft server I know was Noirland (It's been up for over 3-maybe more years) but had incredibly corrupt admins until recently when they sold it to someone. I think it started losing popularity though...
Your "dream server" evolved into PVP servers a long time ago. Safe servers are only there because some people can't stand PVP or just suck at it (me included). Search for a fraction server. They are the only servers that I can think of that are like what you just described.
If you go on a server and it has some 'Safe server' qualities, Ignore them. They have been set there to counter hackers. I would personally still be into Fraction servers if Hackers hadn't have struck me with X-ray mods and blown up my underground bases (which I spent a lot of time working on, making them look nice) twice within a week and a half.
If your willing to take the risk of hackers then I suggest giving this server a try:
pvp.desteria.com
That's the server I was struck by hackers on, so have fun.
Skype: captain_natjo (I don't go on it to often, mainly because I forget to open it up).
Minecraft Username: captain_Natjo
Are you banned on any servers?: I was, but they unbanned me because the admin who had banned me (perm ban for minor greifing; 3 blocks of glass) hadn't used a Plugin correctly and over reacted (I thought what happened was lag from my computer I was using at the time, which wasn't the worlds greatest).
Why should I add you to the whitelist?: I'm a good player, builder and can settle arguments which is pretty useful at times.
How often would you be online: Hard to say. Probably often ish, an hour or two a day, at worst twice a week, but keep in mind the fact that I live in (I guess) another country, so I might not be on when you are.
A little about yourself: I like to write, act and build stuff. I'm awful at spelling, so expect a lot of mistakes while I'm writing, and finding diamonds in minecraft (long story).
Just keep searching, as Zeb said. In survival villages are usually small so depending on where they are you can miss them. I suggest to only search in Plains, Savanna or Desert Biomes because they don't spawn anywhere else (they spawn in modded Biomes sometimes).
Also be aware that villages aren't always big. Those are the ones easily missed so keep a eye out. When searching for one change your video settings too: Render distance 8+ (so you can cover more land), Smooth lighting off (Makes torch light a little more easy to see) and to set VBOs on (to any counter lag). That should be able to counter small villages, in theory.
If either of these don't work I would (don't recommend this though) go into creative and build a village (to ease the cheating, build it in a few Biomes away from your base).
Maturity: Pretty mature, but if I have creative/OP and someone is being a jerk then I am and will have them put into some type of torture (something I would do would be... building a bedrock room which has a pressure plate down a hallway and a sign behind it saying: "will remove all items to leave now or stay in here till I come back" except the pressure plate would be a dud and did nothing. That'd be definitely something I would do to someone being a jerk.)
Position applying for: Builder/Helper
Skype?: yep, but I don't go on it often, mainly because I forget about it.
Skills: Building, Writing, Drawing (It takes time but I get there with drawing), basically anything creative. Also things that come under media (acting, Filming, Editing). I'm good at getting people to settle their differences (Only two examples came to the top of my head: 1. During a Mianite server that turned sour. 2. The owner of a server I went on did a experiment to see how the server would react to a full on noob/little kid and I ended up having to settle an argument between him and one of the most OP players on the server).
Why Should we choose you?: Because I've had experience at doing server jobs before. One problem with me is where I live; New zealand. This means since my times will be different from yours I'll end up not being on the server the same time as you or any other staff to tell me what to build. Helper might work if you have people join the server from my time zone, so that's something to think about.
Past experience (some of these servers are no longer up): Head builder (Townyhaven), Leader of the humans (Land of Teliris) and now for some pictures (some projects I probably got not enough pics of):
Warning: I say that the 'server closed' or 'the world glitched' a lot in the following. This is all true (my luck). Sorry for any inconvenience.
IRL house (unfinished, world file accidentally deleted)
The Hobbit hole (survival, twice built, this is a pic of the second. The original I had more time to work on and was much better.)
Patterned Spleef (somehow I managed to do this on a packed server with the player you see behind me, Myjacobcat)
The wild west bar themed Mianite house (Completed, Server closed)
other projects that I couldn't put on post because of image restrictions:
1. Recreation of Call of duty zombie's Nacht Der Untoten (complete but deleted plot as I wanted to build something else)
2. Several rooms within my Friends mansion (Masion glitched)
3. A Greek temple themed Bank (2 made, 1 deleted other accessible but glitched)
The sky complex (Survival. a mountain based series of bridges. So good and big that it became a the server it was on's new spawn. Server closed)
4. Recreation of the Villa Savoye (famous architectural. Complete, server down)
5. The mansion of Duke Later36 (incomplete. This was a huge building project I attempted to do in survival; a basement, ground floor, 1st floor, attic, about 17 rooms on all of them, an L-shaped (about) 75 by 120 if square. Ran out of resources plenty of times but the server shut down as I had finished building the ground floor (after about a month and a half of building).
6. Masterarchfeind's Tower upgrade (Survival. I was given the task to add a second tower to the server's owner's tower as well as a farm)
7. Fort Raven (WIP. My biggest project yet. I've been working on the planning of it for ages. A creative world build, about 100+ by 100+ with towers, walls, 2 gates, 5 main buildings and a village outside. I had started to build it's floor layout on the server the sky complex was on but the server closed. Since I've put more work into the layout)
8. Too many airships (When I first started playing creative I don't know why but I loved building them)
+more. these are the ones from the top of my head.
Sorry about that long list. I got carried away. umm, yeah... That covered my building experience (a little too well). Contact me if you want to see any pictures of the non-photoed examples (Not all of them actually have photos). As well as that I have script writing experience, video editing and a bit of voice acting (as mentioned before) in case that's any use to you.... I've gone a little overboard, eh? Meh, nevermind. If I've gone too far for you I honestly don't mind if you reject the application.
Seeya later!

I would suggest getting a Technic mod pack with Pixelmon on it. I've seen servers work on them before with plugins. But I wouldn't be the first person to come too with a question like this, mainly because I suck at mods and servers.

What do you want built on the server?
I'm a good builder and I'd be happy to help, But I would like to know what I would be building before signing up.

Sure, I'll suggest a few
1. Mine of the dead
2. deadcraft
3. The Abominable Dead
4. Not minez (jj, don't do that one)
5. Mine of Hell
(I started to run out of ideas. Hope this helped. Tell me when you launch the server please!)

I'm not interested by try use https://server.pro/
It's a pretty sweet server host. You can have free if you want, but it's a little laggy.
