The patch solved my problem! Seeing as I spawned next to a couple trees (trees are still too rare, but hey), and I can actually play survival now!

I usually have stone tools by mid first day and iron by dawn, so no.

I get it when I go too deep in an ocean or something.

I also get an error whenever I touch the BTM file.

Oop, it was an error with the Settings file. I'm a dumb.

Can values for waterheight exceed 128?

You said how to do well. Have you attempted it yet, and if so, screenshots?

EDIT: Even with the fix, I still dirtscreened. I generated a single world without crashing, though.

Also: I think those huge, huge cliffs are caused by rivers cutting through highlands. Seeing as rivers are at ocean level, they'll carve out huge gorges.

Found an ocean at least 150 blocks deep. Went far below diamond level, and the fact that torches were futile in the effort of lighting the place up made everything even more terrifying.

Even without proper lighting or trees this is amazing. Looking down one of those mile-high cliffs is a little nauseating, though, and seeing as the player often spawns hundreds and hundreds of blocks above sea level, and the fact that huge, unforgiving cliffs seperate them from the oceans it's possible that they'll have one hell of a time finding iron. Maybe make it spawn at all levels?
