posted a message on Picking Up Things

    Idea:
    Simple idea. Effective idea.

Some objects can be picked up.

Save time & more practical & a reasonable realistic addition as opposed to having to mine things likes potted plants.

Some objects have a "quick" mine time because its not meant to be mined but they haven't developed another way to turn a block into a "pick-upable" object yet.

    How does it work:
Use Shift + button with empty hand.

    Arm does standard animation.

Think like, taking an item from the item frame. Easy to implement.

    "Advanced":

You can edit which ones can and cannot be picked up with command block rules, etc.

    Another option in adventure mode.

Examples (examples) of blocks that can be picked up in vanilla: (examples)

Flower in pot then Potted plant Furnace Redstone Dust Redstone Mechanical Bits Pumpkin/Watermelon Crops Anvil Beacon Brewing Stand Chests Enchantment Table Jukebox

    (examples) (examples)

    Conclusion:

Honestly, each item would have to be considered carefully for balance reasons. But in general, this is just one more thing that will make the game less tedious & stressful.

Thanks for the support! Do you like the idea of the functionality, the aesthetic, and/or the way they'd spawn more?

Don't know if I really support this, but I do think we need a broader selection of light sources if just for the aesthetics. Again though not sure why it has to be made from all nether materials.

In the OP, I talk about an engineered looking light that suits the Nether. "Netherbrick" after all, is implied non-natural. And there isn't any wood for torches.
    Quote from EpicAura99»

I like the idea of a "Nether Sea Lantern" for all of the previously stated obvious reasons. A smooth lava light block would be perfect for dark sci-fi builds. Also, people complain that it's useless, but you're basically saying "Why have hardened clay/concrete when wool also has all of the colors?" It's just an aesthetic block that accomplishes the same goal with a smoother texture.
Not too sure about the whole mob spawning complexities though. I think it should probably be just your average light source.

Yea, I don't get how a unique texture is useless in Minecraft. Has that person ever built anything in Minecraft beyond a dirt house? I mostly care about the aesthetics myself, but there could be a unique engineering element into it as well that makes naturally spawned nether fortress more breath taking.

that doesn't make sense, Monster stay away from 7+ light level because that way it should be. but making NEW light level will take a lot of work.
    50/50 SUPPORTED
Yea like real life! Monsters stay away from light and Minecraft is all about realism!

    wut?

You seem to be confused and think there is natural law of physics in the game or something. Also "a lot of work" isn't an argument against an idea. (Check sub forum rules) This wouldn't be unique in the realm of possibilities as there are plenty of mods that have something like this.

Also, you never see a creeper blow up your base and gardens in day time?

Aside from the clarification on the light is there anything else you're curious about? Like/dislike?

Here is the way I see it (and I thought it was obvious, but I guess I was wrong, sorry), regular light adds to "light level" and other things that effect spawning, growth, etc. When a "Lava Lamp" is placed, the light level in relevance to mob spawning isn't affected. Think of it as effectively turning your light settings up in the options (only when considering mob spawns). VISUALLY- it's brighter, yet FUNCTIONALLY, nothing has changed.

But again, only about mob spawning. Still can be used to grow crops, etc.

Lava Lamp gives off the "Red CIrcles", Standard light gives off the "Green Circles".

Red Indicates area that is lit, but mobs can still spawn.
Green indicates area that is lit, and mobs can't spawn.

Green light always takes over the red light, much like standard light always takes over darkness.

I'd only support a lava lamp if it was made with lava and looked groovy.

As groovy as minimal minecraft animated textures can go!

The thing with Sea Lanterns is that they're very late game, as you have to go through the sea temple.

I mean, sure. It's the place you harvest them. Might be neat to have little sea coves where you can find them too- but magma blocks aren't the easiest things to get either, but depending on the extra function (or lack there of), you still get a nice light, or almost polar opposite style.

I like it! There aren't many light sources, so why not? It would work great with elemental builds, since they added sea lanterns.

Yea that was motive #2 I didn't mention because I figure most people realized that. Lighting is so niche and it's kinda annoying. Glowstone, and torches suck. Redstone lamps have to be powered. Sea lanterns are pretty unique, same with end rods. You can't use lava, and fire in many places. I don't think I'm missing much here. Just need another regular ol' nice light source if it isn't going to be functional.

You did mention how it has the opposite effect of normal Light, Sorta. in which mobs are most likely to spawn near it, *Nope.* but that detail is rather vague and confusing. *Not really.* For example, light prevents mobs from spawning, so how would it generally work for light to cause mobs to spawn? * Go in dark room. Mobs there. Place torch mobs don't spawn. Go in dark room. Place lava lamp. Mobs still spawn. Place lava lamp and torch mobs don't spawn.* Also, if you place this in the Overworld or The End, would only Nether mobs spawn there? * wat *
Technically, you also didn't respond to my question, it still is pretty similar to Glowstone, and is a mix of the Magma Block and Glowstone. *If sea lantern looks like glowstone to you, I can't help you.*

Care to point out why it is pointless? In addition, the name is one of the least important parts of the suggestion as that can be changed easily and isn't likely to be used by Mojang should this end up in the game anyway. Also, why bring up realism?

Yea kinda weird. Prismarine was given lots of thought and a poll on twitter by the devs. A good name is important. This block actually not only has a light function, but a unique function of being being mob friendly. And a unique aesthetic. Want to know what is pointless? Most blocks in the game. But as a builder each block holds a value.

This has gotten way too many negative comments already. I think this is a great idea. A nether lantern type block would certainly be useful for nether builds, since glowstone is a bit ugly, and also prevents mob spawning. SUPPORT! :D

Right? Glowstone is hideous, and is terrible as the only natural looking light source. Use on the outside of pigfarms, etc.

Glowstone allows mob spawning still, and no, the look is equivalent to comparing glowstone to an reddish-orange-purplish sea lantern with magma-ish texture. As aesthetically and functionally different as yellow concrete vs redstone block.

Also drop ender from the name and just call it a pirate. Ender is kind of assumed considering you can only find it in the end. The "ender" seems to do more to limit creativity than enhance it.

That is the intention. Ender is just for clarification right now.

    Igcandra (stone) / Lava Lamp

Igcandra, or Lava Lamp, or Igcandrastone, basically undecided on the name. It can go "serious" with a "name" unique, derived from the igneous and candere; basically "hot glow", or a play off the old trinkets, Lava Lamp. I like both names, and adding 'block or stone' at the end of everything gets old. (Yes I put a lot of thought into the name because the actual idea is pretty straight forward.)

    The epic story
So, I was watching Grian do an overhaul of a nether fortress and thought the sea lanterns he used were a bit jarring to the composition. I thought, what other blocks could go there instead that provide light? That's basically it. Another light source using some of the new blocks, that fills the roll of a glowstone block, looks as nice as a sea lantern, doesn't require the redstone of the lamp, and has soft colors.

    Block Info
I don't have my PC, atm, so no photoshop for custom texture. But imagine this one with more magma block coloring(red-er/orange-er), and no metal bits on the rim. And fiery animation. A 'clean' glowstone/sea lantern hybrid with magma block colors and fire's light? Sizzleee~~~

This lighting block I'm thinking gives off a light akin to fire. Mellow, flickering, etc. Maybe enemies can spawn near it so we dont HAVE to have mob grinders in darkness, and it can spawn naturally in nether fortresses without taking away from the danger.

    Recipe
Could just use glowstone dust, instead of the whole block, depending on functionality.
