Redstone blocks are basically a bunch of redstone dust compressed down. I don't think piles of dust make very good conductors.

Erm... Redstone as a wire is dust. The dust is what's conducting the electricity. Sure, it loses it's charge after a mere 15 meters, but the dust works as a wire. (I think the redstone blocks would actually make better conductors, because they'd be more solid like actual wire.)

Just as a thought, wouldn't Redstone blocks also make a good lightning conductor?

posted a message on Things you find/found stupid about school

Now, I've been homeschooled my entire life, so I can only guess what public school is like from Boy Scout camps and what people tell me. But I can assume at least someone else has experienced this:

Were you ever interested in a certain subject, and wanted to get good grades in it for either a helpful reward in your education (a scholarship, or a merit badge in this case) or you just wanted to learn the subject for fun? But, sadly, everyone else forced into the classroom wants to work against you?

My Boy Scout troop actually teaches the First Aid merit badge to scouts with nothing better to do every 3 months or so, and I was tired of listening to people teach it to me, so I decided to take First Aid at my Boy Scout summer camp. However, little did I know that another troop decided it was a smart plan to put all of the young scouts who were uninterested in the subject into the First Aid class.

Calling them immature would have been an understatement. The teacher, who I feel sorry for, having to teach a bunch of young, immature, pre-pubescent kids all day, taught us by telling us a story where someone got physically injured somehow, and asked questions on how we would help him. But the kids were less interested in answering the questions so as to get the Merit Badge, instead they were interested in making the story as physically violent as possible. (I assume that these people are the audience of the Michael Bay Transformers movies...)

Come to think of it, I think I only needed to get CPR certified and fully prepare a first-aid kit after doing a First Aid teaching session in my Troop to actually get the Merit Badge, and I was just too lazy to get either of those done again. I'm not really sure why I thought going to my camp to do exactly what my troop does would help me.

(I'll also note that this took place a year ago, I was 14 and most of the kids there were around 11. So I imagine unless you were a mature 12 year-old, you probably didn't have to deal with this too much in a school that splits you up into age groups.)

But anyway, that's my slightly-school related story, seeing as Boy Scout summer camp is one of the closest things to school to me.

Agreed. XP bottles are nearly useless, especially given their high price (4 emeralds or something). Even with the (arguably) cheaper recipe, the price is still (in most cases) still not worth it. Grinding mobs is just 100x more efficient.

I actually got to the point where I made an XP farm using a Zombie Spawner dungeon. If I don't, it takes forever to get enough levels the way I play. (I mostly stay in Peaceful and sometimes switch to Easy, because I prefer collecting materials and building with them rather than constantly needing to sleep or fight off mobs.)

If the XP Bottle gave you multiple levels, and was just a tad cheaper (maybe more like 2-5 emeralds instead of 3-11?) then this would be a lifesaver.

posted a message on customizable iron or diamond armor

Instead of forcing the devs to buff every single enchantment in order to make sure every one of the enchantments is powerful enough to warrant existence (If this were to happen, Bane of Arthropods and Smite would have to be buffed or removed entirely.),why not do this: In the anvil, you can select the order of the list of enchantments on a tool. You can move these around, and the enchantment on the top of the list is the one that gets chosen to be the design on the armor. You can also select whether or not to show any design changes at all.

I can see this looking a lot cooler than a purple glow, and it also allows for much more customization than a simple skin. For example:

Thorns would give the player spikes on his armor.

(On the chestplate, the spikes would be on the shoulders, on the helmet, it would protrude like a horn, on the leggings, they would be on the knees, and on the boots, they would be on the toes.)

Feather Falling would give the player wings on his boots. (Like that one Greek God, I think his name was Nike? Because they named the shoe brand after him?)

Depth Strider would add flippers to the player's boots.

Protection and Projectile Protection (and maybe Unbreaking?) could make the armor look more reinforced, while Blast Protection and Fire Protection would make the armor look more insulated.

Frost Walker would have to be something pretty original. Maybe vents on the sides of the shoes, or icicles crawling up the shoes?

Aqua Affinity and Respiration would look like Scuba gear or some other kind of underwater breathing equipment.

I'm not really sure what Mending could look like. You could go the Tinkers' Construct way, and assume that some form of plantlife is healing the armor. (So putting vines or leaves on it) Or you could just make random sparkly particles occasionally spawn around the player whilst the armor is healing. (But not when it is fully healed.)

And... That's all of the Armor enchantments, but if you could also customize the appearance of your weapons and tools by what enchantments are on them, that would also be pretty cool. (Although I have no idea how to represent a Sharp(ness)-er sword in a 16x16 pixel area, or a more Power-ful bow.)

posted a message on Bottle o' Enchanting Crafting Recipe

Instead of giving XP bottles a recipe, why not buff them so that they can be actually useful when trading for them with Villagers?

Example: Instead of dropping regular XP orbs, an XP bottle will drop 3 to 5 special orbs that gives you an entire level of XP. That seems like a much better trade for 3-11 emeralds. (It would be handy to keep a bunch of these around your enchanting table when you want to enchant several pieces of equipment.)

Huh... I didn't know this existed... Although, considering it is based on Android, I think it would work if you could make PE for Android phones, and in this case, PCs.

Although, I just saw a certain cite note on Wikipedia and it seems Remix OS was discontinued...

posted a message on Better Trees

The real reason trees don't grow gradually, in my opinion, is because it would take a lot of block updates when you have large forests of recently planted saplings.

See, crops can grow gradually because they only have to update one block. When a tree grows, it has to update, not just every block being replaced, but every block that's going to have it's light level changed. That's why when a mod adds in a gigantic tree (Think a Redwood or a Giant Sequoia) and you grow it, you can experience either lag or intense computer heating, or both.

Even if each stage does relatively little, it makes every sapling a powerful weapon of lag. Just place a couple hundred around somebody's base, and every time they try to load in those chunks, the server and client suffer badly.

Although, it's possible that you could make this not cause too much lag if you did something smart, such as preventing more than 3 saplings to grow in the same Region per minute. However, this would make growing a forest or getting wood for a project a lot slower...

Well, Microsoft ruined the company Rareware by buying their company. Link

    They also ruined LinkedIn. Link

And they also ruined Skype. Link

So i highly doubt Microsoft won't screw this game.

Did Microsoft say they wanted any of those companies to last 100 years? Did they make any promises with any of those products?

Heck Microsoft are even the ones who did controversial things to Minecraft which could be a sign to the franchise demise:

    1. Notch left Mojang Not because of Microsoft.

    2. controversial updates (like 1.9 combat which no one asked for) Not because of Microsoft. Also, this is probably one of the most subjective things you've said so far.

    3. how lacklustre the update become (cough... 1.10) Not because of Microsoft. Still subjective.

    4. Minecraft story mode which is just a terrible cash grab for Microsoft People enjoyed it, though. What's the difference between a cash grab and a reasonable way to make profit?

    5. the Marketplace (oh hey! you got a content that was for free in java. Well guess what, Microsoft is greedy enough to make them PAID) I don't like the Marketplace either, but to be fair, Microsoft does need the money to run the Marketplace, and if they want to make Minecraft a 100 year game, they need to sell more content to people that have already bought the game.

    6. server blacklisting (seriously microsoft? arkham network was a good server. Oh well, they made a custom launcher which bypass the blacklist. screw you microsoft. you deserved it.) Likely not because of Microsoft.

posted a message on Change the Java Minecraft name.

That's just one of Microsoft first step to kill off the Java version so the community would move on to the crossplay edition which... guess what?

has the "community" marketplace. I wouldn't be surprised if they banned maps and mods distribution without paying Microsoft.

This is the reason why i hated Microsoft bought Mojang. They're just a greedy company who squeezed a franchise and then throw it in the garbage.

Good bye Minecraft, you'll suffer the same fate as Rareware.

That's a nice Conspiracy Theory you got there. Care to give us any proof, and not just insults? (As much as I dislike companies with little passion or moral for their work too, shouting, swearing and insults are the results of having no arguments to give.)

I even have proof against: Microsoft specifically said that they want Minecraft to be a 100 year game. [Citation! This is a news report, I didn't want to go searching for the location of the quote near bedtime.]

Now, of course, this mission could fail miserably, but have some hope. If Microsoft wants to devote themselves to this cause, then maybe giving them money through the form of a Marketplace, or buying new copies of the game is exactly what we want to do in order to make this a reality.

posted a message on Ocean Improvements Part 1/3: World Generation

I think the main problem behind having bigger oceans is that there are very few players interested spending most of their precious playtime just trying to get over an ocean in a boat. Sure, Nether Portals exist, but you have to either use AMIDST to find more land or sail over there to make sure you don't end up over an ocean.

That being said, though, I think I still like the idea of a more realistic water to land ratio.

Oh yeah, I know about the 1.8 thing, but I also feel like they did something around 1.7.10. I dunno if it's just me or not, but when I play a light modpack in 1.7.10, it feels just a tad laggier than a 1.6.4 pack. (Although to be fair, that could be because I normally set my FPS limit to 30 when I'm on my laptop, and 1.6.4 doesn't have a Max Framerate setting.)

posted a message on Tall metal structures attract lightning.

    For the curious ones:

Emerald is made of Beryl and colored green by trace amounts of chromium and vanadium.

Diamonds are made of Carbon, and are made blue by traces of Boron. (Interestingly enough, Wikipedia says that Blue Diamonds are semiconductors, like Silicon.)

It's unlikely that either of them would be good for conducting electricity. The Wikipedia article for Lightning Rods says that most lightning rods are made out of materials like copper or aluminum. Since Minecraft has neither copper or aluminum in the Vanilla game, Gold might be the best bet for a conductive material. (Of course, if Minecraft ever gets copper or aluminum, this would be a great use for the material!)

Now, this feature could be used for:

    - Gold Farms (Breed pigs, strike with lightning to make Zombie Pigmen, kill and reap rewards.)

    - Charged Creeper Farms (To get mob heads. If this suggestion ever gets added into the game, the passive mobs and Nether mobs should have heads in the game by default...)

    - Witch Farms (Which in turn translates to Glowstone and Redstone farms. A Glowstone farm could be useful on a server who's Nether has been explored and mined over a long period of time.)

    - Skeleton Trap Farms (Although I'm not sure why you'd want one, considering a regular mob farm could give you skeleton bones. This would be more of a side benefit if anything.)

posted a message on Change the Java Minecraft name.
    Quote from Mastermined»

    Oh, such elitism!

Minecraft Java is a bad game. It's fundamentally flawed, and highly unoptimized. Why do you think you need a fairly beefy computer to even run the game properly, unless you have Optifine installed? Minecraft's code is a mess, and that's really shoot it in the foot in the coming years. It's very hard for the developers to keep updating the gaem because it is such a messy bunch of code.

Minecraft: Bedrock (as the crossplay versions are also referred as) was built from the ground up to be as succesful and big as Minecraft: Java now is. And as a result, it's incredibly more optimized. If I run Minecraft: Java I get a framerate in the single digits. Running Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition on the same system gives me a solid 60 fps, without having to downgrade the Video Settings at all. Not to mention the Bedrock version being almost on par with the Java version, especially after the Better Together update releases.

But all of this doesn't matter. At all. Because the game's gonna be renamed Minecraft: Java edition. You know, the name the community has been using to differentiate it from the other versions since the day the other versions were released. Literally nothing is changing, it's such insignificant of a change.

I can see from your comments that you're very elitist about the Java version of the game and I recommend you to stop that. Because Minecraft Java isn't the best version of Minecraft, or even the best selling version of Minecraft. Minecraft PE is superior both code wise and saleswise to Minecraft: Java, and has been so for at least a year.

Even as someone that highly prefers the computer edition over mobile or console editions, seeing as the Java Edition allows for a much more community content and software freedom in the form of mods, maps, etc, I can still agree with this. Minecraft Java no longer runs smoothly on a 2GB RAM computer (Although it seems Minecraft 1.4.5 works pretty well on the same computer...).

To be fair, though, games built for consoles and phones aren't meant to be made for such a wide variety of possible computer designs. You have people with little to no money running a computer that a relative or a business gave them for work, as well as people building bleeding-edge computers that cost thousands of dollars and expect peak performance from their games. And that's not counting different Operating Systems.

posted a message on Please add a Marketplace System in Java Edition (MCJE)

Do you really want to make people pay for mods like this?

Now, not all third-party content is bad, I play with mods quite a bit, but I really don't want to pay for content that isn't going to be screened by Mojang. Lots of mods crash or don't work properly on certain systems. I don't want to buy and download a modpack just to figure out that my computer isn't new enough to run it. And even if it works correctly, there still is a chance I won't like the mod.

I'm fine with vanilla clients of Minecraft Java being able to connect with vanilla clients of Minecraft All Together, and I would love to see that in the future, but don't ruin the fun that modders get out of programming and that gamers get out of free mods just for the sake of "Compatibility". (A Minecraft All Together update could still potentially connect to a Java server or vice versa if either side is using resource packs or skins, so there's no issue there anyway...)
