They did not add new armor-- the armor between leather and iron is chainmail. It is currently in the game, but can't be obtained legitimately.
And please, read the thread before asking about things like the quiver that multiple people have already asked.

Teleporting only works if the area the animal is in is loaded and you are close to land.

This is what the wiki says about it:
"Normal Lava blocks are also resistant to TNT, and will not be destroyed by it. However, “flowing” lava blocks (those which are in the process changing their flow pattern, not those which display a current) are easily destructible by explosions; therefore, multiple successive explosions (changing the environment around the lava and causing it to flow) may destroy lava."

They changed that when they added the new map format.

That only affects stuff in the save folders. This is something completely different.
OP: Start minecraft and see what version runs. It could be that the updated files were saved to a subfolder instead of the main folder.
Don't delete the extra jar until you know what version it is, you might have ended up with a backup you can use with mods/servers that haven't updated.

I have a backup of my entire .minecraft folder for each version since 1.7. You should at least make backups of the minecraft.jar.
Also, this should probably go in the support section of the forums, not survival.

It is possible. It wouldn't use a different block ID, but extra data that stores the color of wool or the type of wood/leaves. The aether mod does this with most of what it adds because it has tools that double the drops of certain blocks. The only problem would be when mining in old terrain: unless there was some kind of converter, the values would be random like old leaves after different types of trees were added.

On my first real world, I built a brick house on a floating island. I eventually got netherrack, made the roof out of it, and set it on fire. That house was loud when it rained.
