A modded survival server with a shop and plots plugin installed. It's eternally noon so that you don't have to worry about mobs spawning. If you login when an op is on the server, you can have your choice of diamond tool or armor.
Gain 5 "coins" for every xp you earn in battle or mining. Use those coins to buy items and plots or trade with other players.
(Gaining xp with mining is much quicker on this server.)
Many bukkit (fly, tpa, afk, craft, etc...) commands are enabled PVP is enabled (unless you change your plot permissions)
Redstone farming machines are built near the spawn location for all to use and ore is much more common - all to make the server more fun.
Claim a plot as large as you would like and farm/mine to sell to others. Use permissions to protect your goods and have a safe haven.
There's also a survival mini-game with an emerald block payout if you can make it through. An established mine and quick access to the nether make for a fast start.
