    Elija's eyes snapped open.
    He had woken up late.
He could tell from the sun streaming in from the window, which meant it must be past seven, and the smoke he could smell from downstairs, which meant it was past nine. His sister never tried to cook early in the morning.

He practically launched himself out of bed, and flew around the room, grabbing up the last few things he needed. Luckily, he had already packed most of his clothes and stuff yesterday, and now he only needed a backpack with the essentials. The Institute might be offering full hotel services, but he had yet to see a hotel that provided toothbrushes!

He rummaged through his drawers for a moment. Notebook? Yes. Pencils? Yes. Elvis Presley bobblehead? ....nah.
He pricked his finger on something, then pulled it out. A Swiss Army Knife. He shrugged his shoulders and dumped it in the bag as well. Maybe someone at the Institute would need a screwdriver.

After a couple more minutes, he zipped the backpack up and flung it over his shoulders, then grabbed up his suitcase and rushed downstairs. He was greeted with a plate full of slightly charred pancakes and a toothy smile from his older sister, Skylar "Good moooooorniiing!"

Too rushed to reply, he simply smiled back, while shoveling the pancakes into his mouth, along with a healthy dose of syrup. While his sister got started burning the sausages, he pulled out his letters and read over them once more. After he'd sent a letter back to confirm that he wanted to go, he'd gotten another, describing the time and place that he should show up. Already he was almost half an hour late, but they could hurry.

After the fastest breakfast of his life, he practically dragged his sister out to the car. He had his learners, but he still had to drive with someone in the car, and his sister had volunteered to just take him there.
Halfway out of the driveway, she stomped on the brake so hard Elija nearly lost his lunch. "We forgot to say goodbye to mom and dad!"

Dropping his stuff, they ran back inside and burst into their parents bedroom, where they were fast asleep after a long night at the hospital. Apparently there had been some surgery for a rather important patient.
After some whispered goodbyes and some hugs, they were on their way again.

Half a mile away, they turned a corner, and the Institute came into view. Elija gaped at the building, with its huge glass walls and iron supports. It wasn't beautiful or elegant, but it certainly was impressive. Especially for someone who lived on the outskirts of the city, seeing the skyscrapers on the horizon, but never really noticing just how big they were. He pulled a lump of green modeling clay from his pocket, plucked off the lint, and tried to shape it into the building.

When they got to the edge of the parking lot, Elija crushed the little skyscraper in his palm and pointed. "You can drop me off here."

Skylar just laughed. "I'm going in too! There's no way I'm going to miss any of this!"

Fine minutes of finding a parking spot later, they grabbed his stuff and rushed inside. The inside of the building seemed bigger than the outside, as strange as that seemed, with the cavernous hallways and double doors every twenty feet. They found a map, and used that to direct themselves to the lobby, Elija fast walking ahead, while his sister huffed and puffed her way behind him. When they finally came into view of the lobby, it already seemed filled with people, most of them (if not all), older than him. Hoping it was the right group, he slid to a stop in front of them. "How late am I? Is this the group that got the letters?"

I like and dislike the idea, one because it provides a safe way to take things down from a distance, but also because it provides a too safe way to take things down from a distance.

Namely, if there is anything seperating both players, even though the sword is a much better weapon overall, and the spear is slow and has no knockback, the extra reach means only the player with the spear will be doing any damage. The same with holes and hills, if the other player is in a 4 block hole, this would mean the player standing above him could reach them without being reached back.

In maps and games where there are opportunities to attack an enemy through a fence, without them being able to break the fence, the spear will always have a huge advantage. While I don't mind this as much with mobs, there are too many ways the extra reach could be abused with other players and PvP. Even if blocks can be broken, the sword attacker still has to break his way through the barrier, all while enduring these hits from the spear (that also pierce armor)

The same thing could almost be said for bows, but for two things. You can run out of arrows, Shields block them entirely, and arrows do not pierce armor. There are even enchantments made specifically for protecting against projectiles.

Partial Support. If there is a way to fix the trapped range thing, I'm all for it. :)

Don't know why but it looks like a Pokemon that won't get any evolutions.

That's what I was thinking, actually. Its big enough and detailed enough that it already seems like a final evolution, and while I would LOVE a Drampa evolution, I think its more likely to have a previous stage, with Drampa being the final evolution, if it gets them at all.

    IC Thread is up!

Get your character into the lobby, however they showed up, and maybe get a couple introductions going. I'll be posting my first IC post tomorrow, and we should be moving along pretty quickly when Dr Style shows up.

Ninty, if you still want that second character, there will be a point of no return, so post them soon.

Every generation, certain children are gifted with the power to transform. Commonly called Spirit Animals, each child has their own animal they can transform into at will, giving them both the physical strength and powers of their creature, and some select mental and magical powers. In this world of magic and technology, this isn't such a strange thing, even if it is unique.

But this year, something different happened. For the first time, some children started popping up with the ability to transform into animals that do not exist. Mythical. Or so we thought...

    =======================================
    Monster Spirits
    =======================================

In this modern world of 2016, we have all the technology of today, along with sprinklings of magic. Magic mostly consists of items, enchanted relics that do very specific things. They are common enough that the general public can find, buy and use them, (mostly in antique shops), but you won't have a pile of them unless you are very rich or a magic fanatic.

These relics are all that remain of the old world, where magic was everything, and monsters roamed the earth. But no one living remembers the old creatures, and no remnants remain, no fossils or scales, so they are considered myths, or illusions of ancient wizards.

Those lucky few that had a mythical creature form assumed it was simply very rare, and not something strange. But an old, forgotten group took notice, and each of the Spirit Monsters ended up getting letters, which read:

    Dear ____________,

We have come to notice that you have a very unusual ability, and would like to meet you. We believe that you can provide valuable research into the world of magic around us, and are more than willing to provide scholarships and special tutors if you take up our offer. Please reply in kind, and we will send tickets for you and a friend or guardian to come to the Institute of Magical Research and Study. You will remain several months, but we will provide housing and cover all the costs of your trip.

Thank you, and with high regards,
    Professor Style, PhD.

So, today, you and your fellow Monster Spirits will end up in the lobby of the IMRS. The adventure is only beginning!

Accepted! You've got quite the interesting backstory there, and we are gonna need to assume the Monster Spirit Uncle wasn't that much older than Heller, because the people that could transform into mythical creatures didn't start popping up until recently, known or unknown.

One more person, and then I'm going to post the IC thread! Ninty, if you wanted a second character you might want to post them soon.

I guess I'm not seeing why he can't say it doesn't count. If everything was exactly the same up to that point, but for some reason there was one different, that would make sense. But it was Gen 1, and they introduced both Eevee and about half of the Eevelutions in it, not because they were breaking the pattern, but because there wasn't anything before Gen 1, and they introduced all of the first pokemon there.

So yes, Gen 1 might mean its not a perfect pattern. But when you want a pattern, and you are out of sync, sometimes you have to change what you are doing to create that pattern. Its like starting to walk with your left foot, and then taking a half step to fix your gait.

    Or something like that.

Also, about the bio, its not a school, necessarily, but a place of study. So yeah, people learn there, but the scholarships they are offering would be for whatever place you wanted to go to, like most scholarships.
Its not gonna matter much, but just so you know. This isn't planning on being a "Monster High School" RP.

    Accepted!

I would say "Wait for later and we will see" on the second character thing, but once this takes off there won't be opportunities for a second character. My main concern with more people was specifically the fact that there would be more people to respond, rather than too many characters, sooo... Yes, you can create a second character. I have seen you work effectively with more than one character before, so I don't have to worry about that.
    Only a second though.

This is my second RP (the first one was a cool idea, but it didn't take off too well). My goal here is going to be to create a small group, because I want the story to move along a bit faster, so there's going to be 5 people maximum. I'd really like people who consistently use proper punctuation and grammar, as it makes it that much easier to move the story along, and for people to understand what is going on, so if you can't be bothered to write well for this RP, please don't join.

    Anyway, rules.

1: No godmodding, metaplaying, powergaming, ect. You know the drill. I do have a plan for the plot, so I'll be controlling the NPC's
2: Romance is all up to you. I'm really not particularly worried about it, cause I have literally never seen someone start hitting on another character in these things, but you know, just in case, PM's, spoilers, whatever.
3: Common sense. You've got it, hopefully.

Your Application! If you'd like to join, use this: (go ahead and take out the stuff in parentheses)
    Name:
    Age:
    Gender:
    Appearance:
Spirit Creature: (You can be a monster or mythical creature, a normal animal, or even just a human without the ability to transform. You can be any animal or Mythical creature that you want, as long as its not something you made up on the spot. Goblins, trolls, phoenix, dragons, griffins, ect. If its something unusual, simply link a wikipedia page or something to show that its a thing.)
Spirit Creature Powers: (Each animal and mythical creature generally has some unique abilities to go along with their physical transformation. Like, a bear might have immense strength, even more than a normal bear, and some birds might be able to create gusts of powerful wind.)
    Bio:

    Here's an example (mine)

    Name: Elija Silver
Age: 17 (Spirit form appeared when he was 16)
    Gender: Male

Appearance: Short, like 5' 2", a bit scruffy. Wears loose clothes, baggy shirts, and a large pair of glasses. Medium length brown hair, and dark green eyes. Long, thin fingers. Even his feet are smaller than you'd expect, only a size 7.

Spirit Creature: Wyrm. Elija transforms into a giant snake-like creature, with nimble front claws. He's not a very large Wyrm, only 8 feet tall when reared up, and 20 feet long. He has no horns, and his head is sleek, very much like a snake. His eyes are the same color, a dark green.

Spirit Creature Powers: He can stick to walls and ceilings when he slithers around, (magic) and his long tail is very strong. He cannot breathe fire.

Bio: Elija was a bit unusual in school, an artsy bookworm of the worst kind, but he was nice enough that no one bothered him. Probably the weirdest part of his daily routine was the lump of modeling clay he carried around, making small monsters and animals in his free time. When he got the letter, his parents were enthusiastic, and he went along with it.

You will arrive at the Institute on the same day, and all get a chance to meet each other before meeting the professor. Those of you who are NOT a human with the ability to transform into a magical monster, (instead being a normal human, or transforming into a different animal) you can find your way into the meeting in your own way, either being a friend of someone else who got the letter, and you tag along for the trip, or by volunteering at the Institute for whatever reason. Regardless of how you do it, you all need to end up in the lobby of the Institute at the same time, however you plan your intro post.

Good luck, Monster Spirits! As soon as five people join, the IC RP will start, and this will no longer be accepting.

You guys can fight over your clown and your wrestler, I'm keeping my awesome archer bird. LOOK AT THAT HE'S USING FEATHERS AND STRINGS TO MAKE A BOW AN ARROW I mean comon that's both awesome and really smart for a pokemon attack have you ever seen a pokemon with such an intelligent attack cause I haven't all I see is seals that blow snot-bubbles and cats that shoot fire from their cro- I mean belt.
    cough cough
Anyway yeah you two can be the ones that decide to switch to the opponent when your starter shows its true colors, I'm sticking with my rowlett that never disappointed me, and became something so much better than I could ever imagine.

Also I heard someone mention that maybe there would be two final evolutions for each starter so maybe you'll get what you want with the other one, if that's gonna be a thing. There's been a lot of firsts here so I wouldn't be surprised.

Aaand I'm done. Calm. Cool. Collected.

Ooh fabulous. I think... I think I'll add one to my INT and get First Aid. Yeah. Should I add those to my main character Application, so that's updated?

Also, what might the top level of different abilities be? Like, level 10 STR could hit like a cannon and lift anvils practically, or something, right? What about all the rest? Does level 10 DEF mean arrows bounce off your skin and you can jump off a cliff? Level 10 DEX shoot arrows with pinpoint accuracy, and also able to catch arrows shot at them? Level 10 INT means they could create a rocket to the moon, if they really wanted to? Level 10 MAG mean they could create a tornado of flames, a mile high?

Those are all just guesses, of course. I really like these things, so I was wondering what the specifics were.

Edit: Oop. Just read again what you said about 1 being average and 3 being awesome and 7 legendary and stuffs. So you don't exactly have a direct change, but I see.

Silver hovered on a mast pole, standing in the shadows created by the heavy post of wood. From up here he could see everyone on deck below, but even if they looked up, he know he wouldn't be spotted.

A while ago, he had boarded the ship, unseen by anyone, and remained that way throughout. For a brief moment, he had considered not paying; after all, the idea was that he wouldn't even be noticed, so there would be no reason to even consider him. But he decided against being a stowaway. After all, he would need food and water eventually. So he ended up leaving a small pile of coins in the captains quarters.

The long trip over was a bit monotonous, but it was easily filled with people-watching. This roost, high above the deck, had been his main resting place, and he could hardly believe all the variety among the beings on the ship. Elves, dwarves, even some sort of bipedal fox. And the relations between them all were even more fascinating.

So Silver watched. That was the reason he was journeying, anyway. He wanted to see the world, experience everything. Preferably without any of it experiencing him.

As the boat docked, he crouched on the mast bar, waiting for the perfect moment. In his hands he held his staff, its moderate weight reassuring.
Right as the boat slid into place, he ran down the pole, away from the deck and over the water, using the staff for balance. When he reached the end, he launched himself off, toward the shore, soaring over the street below. He landed on a sign, depicting a decapitated fish, that was mounted to a wall. It creaked under his weight, but he was only on it for a second before sliding onto the roof.

Now, safe above the rest, and only visible for a few moments to anyone looking up, he started to explore this seaside town. Even just turning down the first street was a new experience, opening to a bustling market.

    And so he watched.

    ------

Several hours later, he finally wandered away, his satchel filled with a bit more food that he had swapped with some coins. He'd have to be careful of his funds, or he'd run out soon, but he'd decided to get himself one of the more fancy looking breads. Saving it for later, he wrapped it carefully and stuffed it with the rest of the food, and wandered through the roofs of the town. A number of them were quite steep, but he navigated them efficiently, with only one slip, landing from a longer distance.

He nearly fell right off a roof though, when he smelled smoke. Peering out over the town, he spotted the source, a rather large column of it wafting upward from somewhere to his right. Curious, he decided to find out what it was.

Reaching the nearby buildings, he slowed down, and peered into the street.

It was chaos. The street was bustling with people, officials, citizens. The burning spot looked like it used to be a tavern or inn. And there were a few people laying prone on the cobblestone, as well. Maybe there had been some sort of a bar fight, or a magical mess up. There was certainly enough alcohol in those places for a single spark to set the place ablaze.
