Billsofat posted a message on Nostalgia, End LetterPosted in: DiscussionI really would have liked to have gotten Minecraft back in the days of Alpha/Early Beta, but sadly I didn't find out about it until after the release. Even then, I am having a growing nostalgia even after my shorter playing time than you have. I got MC in 1.3.2 and while it still wasn't as good as the alpha was, it felt new and somewhat difficult to me. Then when 1.4.2 came out...boy I remember how I hated that. First update I experienced and I literally downloaded the 1.3.2 jar from the internet and put it back in.
I remember thinking something of "Bats, Witches, Carrots, this is stupid! Why can't I breed my pigs with wheat anymore? Why can't I left click doors anymore? What's the point of these bats? These new sounds suck!" Seriously. Then along came 1.5. Smaller update, but I still didn't support it. Bonemeal changes, etc. Didn't really care for it much. Still, I was playing the game, and I had gotten better at it (a little faster than I would have preferred, in fact). But when 1.6 came out I was really beginning to realize what the game was turning in to. Horses. Sounds good at first, but I didn't like it for the reason of the pig riding, and I felt we didn't need an easier travel. I hated the villager sounds, I hated some of the new textures, and why does my food have to drain so dang fast from healing? Also the new launcher is ugly (still is today).
You get the idea so far, I thought each update was stupider and stupider, especially 1.7. By that time I had tried some older versions (they were great), and I was very upset at the replacement of the rose, (something that's been there, since you know, the beginning of MC), and I hated the new terrain. Forest for miles. No TY.
1.8 & 1.9 feel like a modpack. Guardians, water temples, what the heck.
As for my nostalgia, I miss the days even just a few major updates ago. Now I am playing an alpha world, and sincerely wish I had been playing back then. I am getting nostalgic.
I am not really
Sorry if part of this is a little off-topic, but I'm just jotting down some of my feelings.
Phew.

funkyskunk1 posted a message on Nostalgia, End LetterPosted in: DiscussionWell. I never thought I would do this.
I have been playing Minecraft since 2010.
I discovered Minecraft classic one day surfing the internet and played it, and eventually got the real game.
My first day in Minecraft was rough. I created a very small wooden hut, and went out during the night and was killed repeatedly by Monsters.
Minecraft was always exciting to me, my favorite part was fighting monsters in
cramped caves, but with sprinting and darkness that isn't dark, and ores that spawn in giant veins, that part of Minecraft is dead to my experience. The other part I truly enjoyed was the terrain, but even if people say it's a better system, the new terrain just doesn't feel the same, and with new additions such as the new flowers and guardians, for example, I feel like I'm playing a mod instead of the game I enjoyed.
I decided to create a sort of virtual time capsule with a short history of my Minecraft experience and videos that influenced me.
Nostalgia creeped in even worse than before. Yes, I am nostalgic. That's always been obvious to me. People call people like me foolish in their flame wars and provide logical reasons for why Minecraft is better now than it was before, but the feel... It's not there anymore. The feeling of surviving, and creating something beautiful.
My Multiplayer experience has become more and more unfriendly, more PVP based and very realistic. What happened to the planes, the floating pickaxes and airports, the structures that didn't make sense but we made them anyway? The friendly players, the times when you could leave out a chest and nobody would steal? It might be true, it might not, but I don't think that the community is the way it was years ago.
One of the things that people won't understand is that the death of the rose matters to me. Minecraft was a rugged land, where roses stood alone and strong, now it's just domestic poppies and things you get in bouquets.
The death of the rose symbolizes something bigger to me, the event when Minecraft was sold to Microsoft. Turned domestic and tame.
I also miss the old graphics. Weird enough, but the Mipmaps and other things bug me, so I turn them off.
I miss when it was just a bit more balanced, before monsters became weaker and more and more weapons were added.
I understand that it's not normal to feel this way. Nostalgia is a sickness, everything I say in this letter is just my experience, I do not consider it fact.
Nostalgia feels like losing someone you love, and playing the old versions is like looking at a photo of them, but it just makes it worse.
So, as most, I have gone back to playing older editions...
But one thing that I'll miss is the excitement for new updates. The mystery.
I have always enjoyed Minecraft. I have never hated it, even in the newer versions.
Nevertheless, this was Minecraft.
I am now leaving this community. Thank you for listening to yet another disillusioned player. I thank Minecraft Forum for being a great part of the community. I thank the early Youtubers who got the word out about this game. I personally thank Notch, even though he's gone, for the idea and courage to create Minecraft, I thank Jeb for his hard working, I thank the rest of the Mojang team and I am grateful that I was part of this.
Goodbye.

Probably best to use Minecraft.net instead of a help desk website

I think I need to elaborate further on my point. Before resent updates (beta 1.7.3) the game was more about exploring the awesome terrain and building as well as playing multiplayer. Now the game is all about building large unnecessary farms and large overpowered beacons. Now the main goal of the game is to fight the wither and kill the enderdragon.

Minecraft is dying, not dead but slowly going downhill. Mostly because of its bad new updates.
