Get a new drive and install your OS of choice. Once it's installed shut down and plug in the old drive to transfer files from.
You don't want to cycle (turn it on/off) the drive too many more times if it's a mechanical or electromagnetic failure and you are hoping to recover files from it. This way only requires you to cycle it twice, then you can remove it next restart once your files are safe.
Good thing that my hard drive didn't contain important data.
