I would appreciate an official explanation as to why disc owners can't obtain the beta. There does not seem to be a reason for this. The game has updated the same as the digital copies. Sorry just doesn't cut it.

For instance? I would be interested to know what blocks people have been pining after.
As to which update I have liked the least, it's 1.9. No question. Mojang's intentional breaking of most mob farms by changing mob spawn rules so that mobs will not spawn on pressure plates or trip wires really has me ticked. I play on a server almost exclusively and most of the new "sweeper" farms don't work as the tick timing is too precise and any latency just breaks them.
As to the new decor blocks. Sort of on the fence. I don't have a problem with them, some of them will make for some GREAT flooring or wall motif's but aside from that I don't really see a purpose.
Oh hey, also, I didn't see anyone mention the update that caused zombie's pathing "bug" to break servers. That was unpleasant, the server I was on at the time, could not handle the lag and removed zombies altogether. I know it was pre horse update, and I am fairly certain it was the one that added ocelots, but I could be wrong on that one.
