Just a note that I've uploaded version 2.3.6 to curseforge, where it will probably show soon. The new version fixes many bugs, but more notably contains my work-in-progress of the final castle.

    Changelog:

    • Final castle architectural preview
      • Many new blocks
      • Much structure
      • Still a work in progress
      • Monsters and mechanics to come

    • Fix huge lily pad item to be consume an item on placement
    • Fix capitalization mismatch causing knightmetal ring texture to not load correctly
    • Add config option to specify portal item
    • Add in troll caves/giants to old map generation
    • Beanstalks now grow through more natural blocks, such as trees
    • Add a few more safeguards preventing taking items from the uncrafting table when uncrafting is disabled on the server, or the player does not have enough XP
    • Fix crash when the cube of annihilation or chain block returns to a player with empty hands
    • Ice crystals do not automatically despawn in 30 seconds if not summoned by the snow queen
    • Small twilight oak trees and rainbow trees now properly grow with twilight oak logs
    • Giant water lily flowers now insta-break instead of being as hard as cobblestone
    • Giant lily pads make grass noise when broken

The final castle progress is just the building at this point, no monsters or mechanics yet, and a lot of placeholder blocks. Don't grow too attached to the clean, sterile castle, as it'll get much more messed up and weird in future versions.

Yeah, the thornlands are going to have performance issues compared to the rest of the world. There's more surfaces to render, and more block connections to compute than almost anywhere else. I'll look into the crash though.

No idea quite what's causing that. I don't have any weird disk writing going on in the mod. Everything is stored in the normal ways.

I'm hoping someone can help me out with this question - I want to add this mod to my modpack, but I want to restrict access to the dimension until the player has completed a certain amount of quests.

Now, originally I thought I could just change the item ID of the item that needs to be thrown into the pool in order to activate the portal to a custom item that I give the player, but it appears that there is no configuration option for this.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how I could restrict the creation of portals until the player has a specific item I give them?

I can look into adding a config option for a custom portal creation item. It might not be too hard.

    Hi all,

I have a few ideas which I hope will address two issues I've seen in TF without disrupting the difficulty/reward balance (which is perfect as it is) or the overall feel of the dimension.

The first issue is the lack of horses/donkeys in TF. I understand that without river valleys, extreme hills, and oceans, horses are much more effective than they are in the overworld. Even so, I feel that there needs to be a way to get them eventually. I can think of three ways to do this.

1: Make existing creatures tamable and rideable. I think the mistwolves would be the best choice. They seem large enough to be ridden, though far too common to be balanced as a mount. The solution would be to make the food necessary to tame them rare and valuable. I think a hydra chop would suffice.

2: Make new creatures to serve as substitute horses and mules. I propose elk to serve as horses and moose as donkeys. Elk are large enough to bear a rider and a moose could easily bear both rider and chest (maybe even an ender chest). They eat roughly the same things horses do. With the substitution of saplings for sugar, their diet would make sense.

3: Add creatures that can be converted to horses/donkeys via transformation powder or use new transformations for existing creatures.

The second issue is the lack of a portal between TF and the nether.

I propose that a portal be generated near the top of each dark tower. The blocks should be unmovable, indestructible, and carminite-themed. The portal would be activated by a carminite reactor (which wouldn't affect the portal blocks) and would then lead directly to the nether. Upon using the portal, a corresponding portal would be generated in the nether, leading back to the TF. This would have the added benefit of explaining how the tower is full of ghasts, netherrack, and soul sand. It could also solve the first issue, provided that entities could travel both ways through this special portal. You would be able to take your steed from the safety of his stable, through hell, and finally to the top of a dark tower (probably not his best day, but certainly his most exciting).

Please let me know if you have ideas to improve on mine or concerns about the impact on balance or atmosphere.

In regards to the rideable creatures, I've thought about adding rideable elk before. The only real obstacle to adding them is my own motivation for doing it. I try to make this mod into the mod I myself would want to play, and I have to admit that in hundreds of hours of playing minecraft, I've never tamed a single dog or horse or anything.

As to the nether portal, again it's theoretically possible. The issue I could think of is that I'd need to add a specific new portal block since the vanilla one wouldn't quite work properly. And then maybe I'd need a new frame block, since what if the portal got destroyed when you're in the nether or something? It seems like it would be duplicating a lot of semi-complicated vanilla mechanics (IIRC, there are hundreds of lines of code handling vanilla portals) for kind of a small and very specific convenience, without adding anything really new.

Can twilight forest register its treasure chests (the multiple chests in the labyrinth, the hedge maze chests, etc) with the forge system?

Loot++ -- http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/minecraft-mods/2290059-loot-the-item-update-now-with-the-ability-to-add?page=12#c227 -- can access and permit customization of your chests that way.

Uh, kind of. The problem is that the forge system uses a specific method of determining treasure that I don't use. So the two systems are not exactly compatible.

IIRC, the forge method rolls 8ish items all off the same table, while I divide the items in my chests into 5 categories with fairly specific rates of each category in each chest. I could maybe register each category separately, but that would add hundreds of combinations of chests and category. Would that still be useful?

Been wanting to ask this for awhile but I remember seeing castles made of mushrooms in the Mushroom Forest biome when I was playing on 2.3.4. Are those going to be anything or were they removed in the latest update (I can't find one in my 2.3.5 world)

Also, why do ice crystals despawn even when named? I'm assuming it's because I'm spawning them in a warm biome but idk.

The mushroom buildings are still there, but I haven't done anything new with them yet. They're in the rare deep mushroom forest biome.

The ice crystals I think despawn as part of their AI after a certain amount of time. They normally appear during the snow queen boss fight, and I had them despawn after a while just in case one was summoned in an inaccessible location. I'll see if I can change it so they don't force despawn if they come from other sources.

I having trouble going past the thornlands part of the progression even thought I went passed it using lamp of cinders

That part isn't finished yet, so the achievement isn't active.

She drops the two bows randomly. I'll have to check to see if one is weighted more than the other.

The giant blocks can only be placed in a kind of giant grid, 4 times larger than the normal block grid. The restrictions in placement are tied in to how the blocks are displayed, and how they know which smaller blocks are supposed to be part of the larger one.

So just in case this hasn't been reported or worked on yet, just wanted to mention that giant lily pads don't get used up when you place them.

Not too big of an issue, just thought I'd report it.

Weird, I could swear that was working. Well, I'll fix that for the next version then.

Hmm, likely the result of a cross-mod conflict. I'll look into it, but it may not be anything I can fix.

posted a message on The Twilight Forest (v2.3.5: Wrecking Block)

Imagine stepping through a portal into a twilight realm, filled with trees as far as they eye can see. Breathtaking vistas and amazing discoveries await you around every corner. But beware! Not all denizens of the forest respond to your intrusion lightly.

Updated March 29th to version 2.3.5. This version supports Minecraft 1.7.10. New in this version, the Snow Queen rules over the Aurora Palace high atop the glacier, while trolls inhabit caves deep in the rock of the highlands. In addition to these new areas to explore, this version also revises the progression system to feature very visible weather effects in "locked" biomes, instead of less-visible magic effects. Version 2.3.4 adds a /tfprogress command to advance a player's progress, as well as hint monsters that may appear if you're struggling with the progression system. Version 2.3.5 fixes bugs, adds the knightmetal block-and-chain tool and adds a bit of new swamp scenery.

If you haven't played one of the 2.0 versions, there is a new progression system. See the details on the wiki page.

To make a portal to the Twilight Forest, make a 2 x 2 shallow pool (4 squares) of water in a grassy area, and surround it entirely with natural stuff. Flowers, mushrooms or tall grass. Then throw a diamond in (with the "Q" key, by default) and stand back!

posted a message on The Twilight Forest (v2.3.5: Wrecking Block)

Just a note that I just uploaded version 2.3.5 of the mod, fixing many bugs and adding a few new features.

    Rough change log:

    • Disable GL_LIGHTING for firefly glows (thanks, jaqadro!)
    • Add block and chain tool
    • Add knightmetal ring item, part of the block and chain recipe
    • Make giant blocks self destruct when one of their smaller blocks is destroyed or changed
    • Added cube of annihilation
    • Added talisman of the cube
    • Suppress “Already decorating” error in the biome decorator. I’m fairly sure that this mod does not cause the error on its own, but some cross-mod interactions seem to.
    • Add huge lily pads to swamps (lots of them)
    • Add huge water lily flowers
    • Added repair materials for block & chain, ice bow
    • Fixed rainbow oak & small twilight oak trees growing with the wrong leaves
    • Fixed rainbow oak giving the wrong leaf block with pick block
    • Make canopy oak trees have 2-block wide trunks
    • That might be too wide, maybe they need to be 1.5 blocks wide
    • Fixed a bug causing labyrinth entrances to frequently be 3 blocks off the actual ground
    • Updated German translation, thanks Speedy1505
    • Updated Russian translation, thanks Sto3IV
    • Revise knight phantom death code to make generating a treasure chest more certain
    • Stop crash if the knight phantoms lose their equipped item

The cube of annihilation and associated talisman is a treasure for the final castle, and so is unavailable outside of commands or creative mode, but the block-and-chain is craftable with like 15 knightmetal ingots. Freshly-generated swamps should have a fairly heavy helping of lily pads and flowers, making them a little easier to walk around in.

    Keep reporting bugs and etc.!

Bug report: Upon passing through the portal to the Twilight Forest, there are no weather effects indicating locked biomes, though the penalties for stepping into those biomes are still in effect. Closing and re-opening the world allows the weather effects to work normally. Windows 7, Java 8 64-bit, Forge 10.13.2.1291, Twilight Forest 2.3.4.

Should be fixed for the next version.

While I intend to update to 1.8 eventually, I want to make the 1.7 version as good as I can. I realize that a lot of people who play modded Minecraft will be sticking with 1.7 versions for a while, and I'd like to finish the current batch of content I have planned before I begin the update.

Server crash from chunk generation on 2.3.4 http://pastebin.com/hpXpasVc

Those "already decorating" errors come when a mod tries to generate thing during worldgen more than a chunk away from where it's currently generating. I think I've fixed them all in the mod itself, so they're either coming from another mod, or from a bad interaction between mods.

For the next version, I've made it so that you shouldn't get that error anymore, but it just suppresses the error. Whatever is causing it will still happen, which will cause unpredictable effects, such as lag spikes or different errors. We'll see!

Updated to version 2.3.4. Added a few new things.

    • Added /tfprogress command to advance a player past a certain boss progress
      • Does not grant the associated items, which may still be needed in some cases
    • Spawn hint monster near player when player is having progression problems
For the next version, I think I'm going to change how the progression system works internally. Instead of being tied to player achievements, I'll just have killing the boss trigger a change in the general area. So if you kill a naga, it will immediately remove the barriers around the lich towers on that map area. Should work more intuitively, especially in groups. It's a little more technically demanding though.

Good to see your back! Just a few things I want to mention. The Giant's pickaxe can mine giant obsidian, but not normal obsidian (it just destroys the block). Is this intentional? Also some block suggestions:

    Block of ironwood
    Block of Knightmetal
    Steeleaf block
Labyrinth shield (replaces the bedrock currently surrounding the labyrinth, works and looks like the stronghold shield, but the unmineable sides are yellow, and mineable side is blue)

The giant's pickaxe is in a lot of ways an ordinary stone pickaxe, so I suppose it is intentional. I may add the storage blocks sometime in a future version. For a long time before Minecraft 1.7, I avoided adding blocks that I didn't consider mechanically necessary because of the hassle around block IDs. Thankfully that's no longer a real concern. Now if they could only get rid of Biome IDs.

I really like the Snow Queen but the thing i dislike is that she doesn't fight back against the Wither

There was a change in the actual Minecraft mob targeting routines that made it harder to have mobs target other mobs. It's something I'm aware of, but it's not a high priority.
    Quote from Keybounce»
Any chance that the labyrinth walls, and shield blocks can be made truly "unbreakable"? Or is it desirable that the rotarycraft bedrock breaker and borer can remove them?

I think that for technical reasons, I had to make them not totally unbreakable, but only with a high hardness. In the case of the shield, I think the hardness is so high that a normal tool would take perhaps months to mine the block.

I've got some things I'd like to work on in the near future. I'd like to add more hints about the progression system in game, since some people find that confusing. Other than that, I've got to get to work on prototyping the final castle along with the monsters and treasures within.
