Mainly caving. However, I don't usually mine all the diamonds i find when I find them. I'll write down the coordinates, and then get a pick with fortune to get even MOAR diamonds.

Once you have a fortune pick, you can keep repairing it as it wears out. A Fortune III + Unbreaking III pickaxe that is constantly repaired can super-multiply your diamonds for just about forever.

This challenge isn't something that can be completed in just one update. 1.5 / 1.4.6 isn't going to add any new mobs or blocks YET.
This is something that is suited more for long-term figuring Minecraft out on your own as it evolves, but it's a lofty sacrifice not being able to have any outside information about the game, which is what just about everyone has been doing.

I don't really go branch mining or caving. I built a blood emerald machine (by Docm77, look it up) which is the closest thing to exploiting testificate trades. I mass a bunch of emeralds then buy my diamond gear.

That's Docm77 for you. The Mindcrack server folk are really talented Minecrafters.
Exploiting testificate trades might be a good idea if you have a bunch of villagers in say, an apartment building, and you can easily acquire heaps of emeralds with wheat or something.

Looks like Speed II + Jump Boost II + Ice still can't hit 6. Without using Punch bows, looks like 5 might be the max for vanilla, unless there's some method that I've not heard of.

Finally I still think the bird cage should be visible when you are close to it.

I have to agree with that completely. Personally I think that three_two should make the birdcages more accessible in certain areas. Take the big tree "FIL" in VF II for example, the birdcage is hidden under obsidian near a huge bedrock maze that constantly spawns huge amounts of cave spiders. While the difficulty of that area was intentional, I really think the birdcage should be made more obvious.

Hello Great Architect Of The Universe also took me forever to find the birdcage. I mean, what are the odds that someone stumbles upon a tiny gravel waterhole on their first attempt? There needs to be some sort of cave entrance leading down to the birdcage. Accessibility problem.

Nevertheless, I will give three_two credit for making the second map more accessible. An LP of VF1 takes about 50 episodes, but an LP of VF2 takes 30 episodes, 40-45 at most.

Wow. That's awesome. How easy/hard is it to get Punch II, again?

Not very easy to get. With a level 30 enchant, you only have a 17% chance of getting Punch II on a bow. The chance is even lower if you use enchantment books.

posted a message on Minecraft Frequently Quits Unexpectedly Under Very Specific Circumstances
Hey guys, BenOngAlive here, and recently I've been encountering a problem that has been significantly hampering my enjoyment of Minecraft.

In short, Minecraft has been quitting unexpectedly a lot on me lately. By quitting unexpectedly, I'm referring to that message on Mac OS X where the Minecraft window vanishes without trace, leaving the message "Minecraft quit unexpectedly" on a small window on the screen.

The odd thing about when my Minecraft crashes/quits for apparently no reason is that it only crashes under very specific circumstances. Specifically, it only crashes when I play custom maps (CTM, Adventure, etc.) and it only crashes when I enter specific areas of certain custom maps. When this happens, I often delete that custom map in dissatisfaction, crestfallen that I won't be able to properly play through it.

My question to the community is if anyone has experienced similar problems on their Mac with Minecraft (I did check the discussion thread as well as the client threads to see if there were any similar threads, but didn't find any.) And also, what could be causing the unexpected crashes in such specific maps? Is it the way that the chunks in those maps are rendered that cause the Singleplayer server to struggle immensely?

    Some details:

I have a decent (but not overpowered) iMac w/ 8GB of RAM and a 2.8GHz processor. Minecraft is running on a healthy amount of memory, and I can run it at an FPS of around 100+ with Optifine.

I have no mods installed except Optifine.

Examples of custom maps where Minecraft constantly crashes for me (though only in specific areas) are Razul by Block_Fortress and From Ashes (a CTM map) by the Gustavo Entertainment Team. I'm not sure that helps the case, though I thought it would be useful to cite some examples.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well technically...those add to the game unofficially.
    A mod is still a mod. :P

Optifine and Shaders mod are performance/aesthetic mods, and they don't affect gameplay all that much, do they? I guess I'm just a sucker for vanilla Minecraft.

Optifine, take and give a couple shaders, and that's about it. I don't favour anything that adds anything to the game unofficially.

TNT didn't have any professional animation, but Minecraft Style did to some extent. Plus, Minecraft Style parodied a far more well-known song.

And if you got 100 blocks up, you can jump over 10 block gaps!

Up to the height limit, you can probably jump across 30 block gaps, though you'd get yourself killed without a hacked Feather Falling enchantment. And you'd probably need level VII or VIII to survive that sort of height :/
    Quote from LocalChamp9139

Sethbling has a video on using the Punch II effect of a bow to get across gaps.

I'm definitely going to look into that. Jumping with Punch II bows is something that should be implemented into parkour maps in my humble opinion.

(sorry for being a smart-ass in my previous post)
To answer your question with a much more thoughtful answer, I would have to say it would be a very close call to make it to the end of the fourth block during a jump from a sprint after using a potion of swiftness II, and the jump boost effect from a beacon. It may be possible, but it would require the user to be very skilled in timing to ensure that one would jump from the last possible moment of a block to make the jump.

    Speed 2 beacon,
    speed 2 potion
    Ice runway
    works for me

Indeed, with Speed II, Jump Boost II and Ice, it is possible to cross 5-block gaps in vanilla survival. Just tested and confirmed. Cheers guys!

With this set-up, I find myself being able to cross 5 blocks without a problem, but I am very barely unable to hit six. With some precision it might be possible, but very narrowly.

I actually thought that the jump boost wouldn't help because it gives you height over distance when jumping, but it looks like the distance boost that the ice gives you more than compensates for that.

You can jump a 5-block gap easily...if there is a substantial height difference.
