Its a good idea...but I already have been given quote a few buildings. Editing them to fit that would take quite a long time.

Maybe just rig up the final lab area to blow. I havent started building there yet, and the whole point of the game is to get through there so...

MC: maybe its just my game designer mentality, but i wish to create a game that makes cheating as tough as possible, or even eliminates it completely. Its probably definitely unrealistic, but I still stubbornly try.

Hmm...im not sure how I would rig up anti-pick traps. the best solution would seem to be limited crafting. (like you said before, make a sword, or make torches, etc)

Once I finish you wanna take the map and rig up the limited crafting version?

oh, and one other thing. I sent a message to fatbaby, but he hasnt replied yet. If I dont hear from him soon, will you do some texture pack work officially? I want to release it soon for everyone whos trying to build.

    We could do both?

    Zombietown: Hack and Slash edition

    Zombietown: Survival edition

Hack and slash being the original concept you pitched where it's just survive by making your way to the next chest of items, and survival requiring the player keep an eye out for crafting materials to aid in their quest since the chests will only contain sparse amounts of material.

Really once the city is built and everything is in place it would just require someone to go through and make the slight alterations necessary to distinguish one from the other. Find someone with a good eye for detail -- I may be willing to do it myself if I have time, though I'll probably end up revamping it to use my textures as well ;D

So what about the plot of escaping the city? Implement it into both modes. just one, or have that be a third mode?

    Nuke the world

Ah, so it IS a post apocalyptic zombie invasion.
    That was a joke.

Well, people are going to be able to break anything if they feel like it, unless you build the walls out of tnt or bedrock, Which I doubt you want to do. People will always be able to get past your puzzle without solving it, just by busting down the door. I'm moving squarely into the mod camp here, I'm voting for craftbook, as well as something that would make it impossible for players to remove any block except for wool or something that they had placed. I think that the data is recorded somewhere as to whether or not the player has placed a block because certain map viewers have the option to view only blocks placed by the player. Also, to solve the biggest problems, you could just remove the pickaxe as an item. But, yeah, that would be hard.

That sounds like it would require a mod. I cant do mods, nor do i really want to...

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9GX11M1T
I just redid a few terrain textures, nothing major was added.

So, as a joke I decided to make myself an awful looking MC texture pack. I liked it so much I decided to share it!
    http://www.mediafire.com/?thohog2pxo0oduh

Right now its just the terrain. BUT if enough people like(hate) this pack, Ill finish the mobs and items and such.

    enjoy the fail!

Building barricades isnt a problem for this game, i encourage it. I just wish to limit ways the player can break things, especially puzzles. If I allowed picks on the map the game could be beaten in less than five minutes

plusI still have tons of free iron and diamond blocks lying around. free armor and weapons. Bah.

You already know it's possible to fix both of those problems, especially given that you now know about the replace function in MCEdit and the fact that we can reskin blocks.

Yes, I do. Im gonna do that regardless of what happens with crafting anyways, as a security measure of sorts.

The opinion of the masses still seems to be "no crafting" though, except for a few who would like it in some form.

Gah, i dont know anymore. I might just flip a freakin coin. Heads no crafting, tails I nuke the world.

Grass is the top left tile in the terrain.png
It doesn't look like grass because it's grayscale in order to work with the biome colorations.

Hrm...somehow a chest got pasted there. Thanks!

Use paint.net (http://www.getpaint.net) it's a lot better for pixel art. just use the magic want tool to select an area you want transparent, and press delete.

    This worked, thanks!

New problem now! The top of my grass now wears the texture for a chest. I dont see the grass top in the terrain.png either. Where is it/how do I fix this new ugly?

Ive found the best defense is simply camouflage. A server Im a part of got hit be griefers breifly, and my house was the only untouched one. Why? because it was totaly hidden.

My house from the outside looks like a dirt mound, I even added a few trees and such. Also there are no torches outside as a giveaway. The entrance to the house is tucked under a little cliff overhang, and its almost impossible to see.

    I freaking love bonemeal.

My current save is on a tremendously large desert biome, and there was ONE tree at the start. Needless to say my first night was cold and dark. very dark. Next day I dug up some dirt and planted all of the saplings from that one tree. Bonemeal was the only way I could have gotten enough wood to survive the second night.

Yay. If you need a website...
But anyways, the player is going to be able to break down any part of the puzzle anyways, regardless of whether or not they have a pick. It'll just take longer. Punching through stone minus a pick takes about 30 seconds. You could build the walls out of tnt, that would stop them. But that would be... ugly, to say the least. Also, people will build barricades out of wool if that's used anywhere on the map. It holds out the zombies just as well as wood.

    Suggestions:
Place sticks inside chests, as well as some resource blocks. This will give the player the option to make a pickaxe. I understand his. However, there is no wood. If this is a wood pickaxe, it will run out waaaay before they get anywhere important, and they have to mine through things with zombies chasing them. Not easy with the speed you get out of a wood pick. Once they have cobble from the pick, what do they do with it? They can't make tools because they used up their sticks making the pick, and so now they're stuck, until they find another chest where the process will be repeated.
Or they could make a sword. That'd let them hack hrough zombies, which I would rather not have be a large part of the game, I prefer sprinting. But it would be way more useful than the pick in the long run.
If only sticks and small amounts of cobble are placed in chests, that would force players to make the choice between tools, with swords being the obviously wiser choice.
Video Game design? Maaan. Good luck with that, more power to you. I'd suggest starting by learning, say, Java, Since Minecraft's coded in that and all. MCEdit is really not the best way tos tart, I don't know of any games built like that.

Even a wooden pick gets too many uses for me to want ti implement it. The player needs only to be able to break down some key spots in a puzzle to completely ruin it.

There will be no need to make swords. There will be PLENTY on the map.

Either incredibly flat or incredibly mountainous. Both of those types of maps are just perfect for building epic stuff. I dont care what the terrain type is, just either flat or covered with hundreds of tall mountains.
