    My first structure was in Alpha, not survival...

    All it was was a freakin huge tunnel into a mountain, with a rather badass cobblestone entrance. It had a very nice "Evil fortress" vibe.

    The random lights are a glitch the sometimes remain after burning down a huge forest. I just made a huge forest fire and had the same issue.

    Some time ago, when I was sick and probably delirious with fever, I thought out a whole monetary system in Minecraft based around coal.

    Ive forgotten mst of the values now, but I figured out the value of an item based on how much coal was needed to obtain it, its value as a tool material (where applicable), and some other factors.

    8 :stone: = 1 :Coal:
    1 :log: = 1 :Coal:
    1 :Iron: = 2 :Coal:
    1 :Diamond: = 64 :Coal:

    and so on.

    I think Im gonna have to remake this some time...It worked well I felt.

    Usually Im counting while I mine.

    I dig 2x1 mineshafts and place torches every 8 blocks, so Im always counting how many blocks Ive removed.

    When I find something valuable I just grab it and continue digging. I usually am mining for cobble, to help build my town or my fort...

    So, I finally finished a large walled fortress Ive been working on for a few days.


    Now I just gotta put stuff in the fort.

    Problem is I have no ideas. I could use a few.

    The space inside the walls is 27x21. Not the biggest, but big enough for a couple of things Id say.

    So...what should I put here?

    Passive mobs annoy the hell out of, so I kill them upon sight.

    as a result I end up with boatloads of feathers, wool, leather, and pork.

    I keep a small farm as a backup, but pigs always spawn like mad. I kill them, and I have enough pork to feed a small army.

    Im not a big fan of his actual ideas, but I wholeheartedly agree that Minecrafts adventure aspect is pretty much dead. The building aspect seems to be flourishing, especially if/when the piston mod gets added in. But having pistons will reduce the danger from mobs even further.

    His idea of mob variants was a good one, I personally would also like to see smarter mobs, mobs that can break blocks, stuff like that. I would like there to be an ever-present danger in Minecraft, his point about having a completely mob proof base made entirely of dirt is spot on.

    I kind of wish for the old dangers of Survival Test, where mobs could spawn anywhere, at any light, inside your house. It gave the game a sort of frantic, action feel.

    Perhaps we need a new set of difficulties:
    Creative (adapt the creative mode in, add the new blocks)
    Normal (Keep the same game-play as the current Normal game difficulty)
    Intense (Reduce spawn limitations on mobs, such as letting them spawn in brighter areas, and only 12 blocks from the player as opposed to 24)

    Eh, I oughta write my own ideas down as opposed to clogging your thread...sorry.
