I get what you mean, though here it would be help exhume those that are buried alive. Or to say help alive non computer building threads get seen more often instead being buried by computer building threads that are best fit to their own sub forum given the mass number of them. This is something that has plagued C&T always. While computer building threads are normally always active, they are plenty of other non computer building threads that are as well. Activity should not be affected by such small change.
Well, I don't browse the section in question, so I really can't provide any specific insight besides an example of splitting a section into too specific of a category basically making it unread except by a very small community. Ultimately, it's up to the admin on what goes on for the section, but just understand that if a section is too specific it does cause problems, even if it is more organized.

Edit: Just looking at the section, I don't see why it needs to be split even more. Maybe at best enforce tagging, but right now there is a 30 hour gap between last posts on the first and last post of the front page of Computers & Technology. Why does that need to be made even slower? General support is by far slower, having a multi-day last post range. What benefit would be gained by making mods have 5 sections instead of 2 to look at when it already takes more than a day to remove something from the front page?

Those in italics are just examples, however I seemed to forgot to note that, but the support one however is just a better name revise to current "General Support".

The board may not be active, but organization still does no harm in any to avoid confusion.

Actually, inactivity is harmful, especially for content that only needs to be viewed to be helpful. I could easily split M&M into a dozen of extra topics for organization, but it'd only make threads receive less views because X didn't happen to be browsing that section and see a topic name that interested them.

If you want a specific example: I made a section for reviewers in the M&M section. It was almost universally wanted, requested, and after a few weeks of watching threads related to reviews get traffic I decided it might be a good idea. Threads barely got any views except for by people requesting their content be reviewed. Those threads struggled in the normal sections, but basically died in a section made for them.
Someone may not be specifically looking for a thread, but happen to see one titled similar to an interest of theirs and decide to read more, or see a similar issue and find out how someone else fixed it.

Can't you just add a ' ' (space) character to the front of the word in the filter list? Or does it strip white space when it reads the list? (Basically don't match the 'bad' word unless it follows a space.) Might make it slightly more trivial to bypass the filter, but it's already trivial to bypass the filter so you wouldn't be losing much.
The issue is that allows people to still swear just by adding extra letters.

Right now, I think it's set up like
    "*word*" = "* *"

which means even if you put it in a word, it'll still censor the swear. If you did
     "*word *" = "* *"

then just pluralizing the would would allow it to bypass the swear filter, and make the filter pretty much useless.

If you mean to put it at the front of the word ("* word*") then it's bypassed by putting the swear after any letter or symbol. Then, people would just #swear to circumvent the filter.

Personally, I feel the word could just be removed from the filter since, at least in my opinion, it's one of the less offensive ones. Unless they can tell it to ignore "Lapis Size" and "Lapis Spread" from the filter, but then they'd have issues of people typing it in and misspelling it, which would then make the filter remove it anyways.

posted a message on what is with all the ads on this site?
I think Jimquisition did a good episode on ABP.
Because it has a bit of NSFW, the TLDR version is he doesn't really have an issue with adblock users, but it causes issues for the content you like. Destructoid reported 40% of their users blocked their ads, that means the other 60% need to cover the costs of those 40%, which doesn't necessarily mean 60% more ads because those people who adblock might be on the site more, which means even more ads. Advertisements also get made worse and more intrusive to get the people who do view ads, and then more people adblock because the ads are intrusive and they blame the site, not the advertisers.

More people that adblock, the more ads that are needed to cover their costs. Personally, I feel people who adblock sites yet regularly use the site are simply leaching off the site and should either disable adblock or not use the site at all. There are other ways to get rid of the ads while still supporting the site in some way. You can buy Curse Premium and have no ads on any curse site, or upload a good texture pack or mod and if it gets 1000 downloads you get it for free.

The one thing I agree with Jimquisition most though, if you adblock and tell someone to change/cater to you while you support them in no way, the person creating the content shouldn't give you a moment of attention.

    That's my personal opinion though.

posted a message on Moved topics clogging forum
The problem with moving without leaving a link is someone may think their thread was deleted instead, so they'll repost it. It's also there for convenience, in case someone happened to have read a thread and was curious enough to want to read updates, but didn't post or subscribe to the thread itself.

Because there are no new posts in the thread since you last read it (empty bucket) and you have a post in it (diamond).

It's actually just really common for someone who doesn't know the right section to post in the first one they see that might even slightly be relevant to them. Really, not much can be done about preventing it, so just report all of the threads in the wrong section that you find for them to be moved.

My bad. I thought it was the Sectional Moderators that decided, and then the Forum Admin that had to decide as well.
Well, like I said, moderators can (and back when I was admin, did quite often) voice their opinion through votes and comments, but in the end it was the FAs choice alone. There were a few I denied/accepted against the general opinion of the mods, but that was pretty rare.

Overall it's a very nice and way better system than we used to have (every post in 1 section), but it still takes time.

What's the function of the buttons labeled "30 days" "60 days" and "90 days" when viewing my application? I've pressed the 30 days one, as I'm assuming the function of them is to let the admins know when an application has been pending for over 30 days. Thanks!
If I remember correctly, those buttons do absolutely nothing. I'm not sure what they were originally supposed to do, but they're unused in our current system.

Asking about it is not going to make the staff move quicker. You need to understand that the sectional moderators have a life outside of MCF and the internet. They can't spend hours and hours rooting through applications just because people are impatient.
Small correction here: in the end, it's entirely up to the Forum Admin. Section moderators can voice their opinion, but the FA makes the decision, all of the applications are on few people.

    Quote from poryy

    - New users would have to read the general forum rules on the first time they log in and complete a 10-question quiz about the rules before they can post. Because some people may not be able to find this, I propose that they are directed to the quiz and rules when they confirm their account via email.

Most of the time when a rule is broken it isn't because they don't know the rules, but because they didn't remember or didn't care. A quiz wont change that.

    - Put filters on the word "Herobrine". Any thread with this word in the thread title should automatically be reported.

    Herobrine
    Herobr1ne
    Her0brine
    Her0br1ne
    Hero Brine
    Typos of the word "Herobrine"
    etc.
And then, even if that did happen and we filtered every variation of the word, they just call it "him" half the time anyways. The filter wouldn't resolve this.

    - Create a more strenuous anti-spambot system. I know that Curses' software sucks [Pretend I didn't say that], but seriously, I see spambots all over the place.

It is already very strict and already gets numerous false positives on actual members with less than 10 posts. If you see spam, report it. No automatic system will catch everything without making the forums unusable.

    - Ban adf.ly links. I know this thread will get a lot of flame for this, but reasons exist and they are decent.

    Nope.
    1. Adf.ly's ads are malicious 99% of the time and covered in fake download buttons. Anyone with a basic sense of decency would not direct people there just for a tenth of a penny (fifth, hundredth, whatever.)

I doubt that percent is correct, since I don't use any adblock/script blockers and have never received anything malicious, or at least nothing that got past my antivirus or malwarebytes. Besides, a little compensation for their work from the numerous people that would never donate I don't see a problem with. Sure, they may only get a few bucks total from their created content, but I doubt they're looking to pay their bills with it.

And if you're using the internet without an antivirus and malware protection, it isn't just adfly that's going to infect your system.
    2. Adf.ly does not permit the 5-second timer to countdown if an antivirus or Adblock is on. This should be obvious.

Lolwat. If something blocks the site, of course it isn't going to permit you to bypass it. As for blocking the button if an anti virus is on, I've never heard of that and I don't disable mine to get through adfly.

    3. Plenty of better methods of making money exist, and one is something called a
    Donate button

    And most people don't donate.

Finally, I think that we can learn a few things from this forum. One, the mods here are awesome at deleting spambot threads and threads that criticize Curse. Second, this forum can still be great if a few minor things are changed.

Yeah, they're so good at deleting criticism of curse that threads criticizing curse still exist.
Ohwait, no they leave actual criticism around, they just delete threads that are nothing but attacks. Cuz you know, insulting and attacking = criticism.
    For example: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/2243413-is-mcf-turning-not-good/#entry27406336
Finally ended with a response from citric explaining things a day later and being locked not deleted.
    http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/2256043-grievances-from-ppns-forum
Or this thread, containing responses from citric and went on for a few days before being locked.

There are other threads too, and people are free to criticize, but as long as it is criticism. Insults and attacks are not criticism. If things are done in at least a polite manner, citric for as long as I've known him has never had an issue seeing it. When it devolves to insults and attacks, that's when it gets locked, or when the conversation is just going in circles.

One would think that if your IP passed the test it wouldn't have to keep doing this every single time - it is highly annoying to have to go through this check for every page or topic I want to view.

If this were the case, it'd be easily exploited by whoever is ddosing. Use the forum once normally, suddenly no more protection.
