I was an incorrigible know-it-all, a quality which manifests as bratty in kids. I suppose the only thing that's changed is that I know more, now. This characteristic stops being "incorrigible" and starts being an asset once you hit a certain age.
I didn't really have passions, just flights of fancy. Some people went to school to get an education; I went because my mom dropped me off there every day and because it was no real trouble. Made friends with people who were funny or smart, but mostly just sat back and watched.
My least favorite kind of OC is one that interacts with a canonical character (and God help me if it's in a way that changes the events of the source material). Because on the subject of people roleplaying and such, I would willingly subject myself to a nation of Mary Sues if it meant I didn't have to see anyone try to make a derivative work by bastardizing an established character.
Gamers assuming other people only are guys has got to just be a probability thing... I mean, surely it is still the statistical likelihood? And if not, the precedent is still there. While I hate gender discrimination as much as (probably more) than the next guy (or gal), this confusion is just residual - a force of habit, nothing malicious or even intended. It just takes time for people to adjust to environments changing.

Speaking as a professional on the topic, I recommend that you watch Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Steven Universe is my current heavy-hitter, but you've already got that covered, and Avatar is my legacy favorite.
EDIT: And I'm an adult, so you know everything I say must be true.

So I use italics if I really think the text benefits from it, or embolden it if the statement truly needs to be heard.
